Hello I am making a thread about gift suggestions. I need a couple gift suggestions myself, but it's also fun to suggest gifts for other people. Let's ask for help and get it

I don't really care about a format for this, so I need a suggestion for my mother-in-law. She's a 70-something abuela and the best thing I ever managed was good house shoes. My inlaws like tv and comfort.

I could also use a gift suggestion for my brother in law who is like if the 40 year old virgin was real and living with his parents. He's into legos that I can't afford and anthologies of comic books. He liked the trade paperback I got him that was based on Cu Callain but I can't remember the name of the comic.

I need gift ideas for my wife, she likes unicorns and crochet and star trek

I want to see links to products or longform but try to make it understandable why someone would want a thing.

Most of the stuff I bought this year is for kids or young-ish people. Sorry OP I think most of these items won't be appropriate for you but I'm going to post them anyway.

Paper airplane engine https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08JLZVB3Z

It's not just a source of power, it has active electronics that stabilize it. You can apparently slap it on a piece of lettuce and it'll still figure out how to fly around.

Puzzle book thing that you build and then it's a semi-functional lock box https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0D9KZ13Z7

Yeah you could probably smash it open with minimal effort but c'mon

I'm an 'Australian' white supremacist settler colonist that thinks 19th century white men discovered animals that black people have known for 30,000 years.
If I'm really stuck finding one perfect gift for someone my usual trick is to buy 3 smaller presents for them:
1. Something practical, but high quality and probably more expensive than what they'd buy for themselves (high quality kitchen item, expensive tie, etc)
2. Something practical and cheap which they might use every day (socks & jocks, etc)
3. Something dumb and stupid which will probably give them a laugh when they tear off the wrapping paper

They'll hopefully get a lot of use out of at least one of the practical gifts and the wacky gift will hopefully bring some holiday cheer. Practical gifts on their own are nice but a little underwhelming and wacky dumb gifts are fun but that doesn't last long, combining them gives you the best of both.

Yeah the problem with buying a gift for someone who is deep into a complex hobby is that there's a very good chance it'll either be something they already have or something they didn't want to start with. The trick here is to not buy the hobby but buy around the hobby - if they like Lego then get them some Lego branded slippers or a t-shirt or something. You still kind've need to know a little about their likes for this to work, if all you know is that they like comics so you get them a Spider-Man t-shirt that won't go down so well if they're into obscure small press comics and hate "capeshit"

Find out where she buys yarn/supplies at and go from there. I think Etsy might have driven the already insane Fibercraft folk but I assume that's still where you can buy high end hand made one of a kind yarns and craft kits.

The other gift hack I go by is upgrading or replacing something they like/use for a new or better version that they've been putting off replacing/fixing/upgrading.

Also food hampers for the Olds (me) because they (I) love weird biscotti flavours, jerky samples, jams and shortbread biscuits (cookies in seppo).

I legit work at a gift and stationery store so spending time to guestimate people's gifting questions is my day job. I just go on here to be dead and gay and old.

Nordstrom has a whole section of their holiday gift guide devoted to cozy gifts. And old ladies love Nordstrom.

If she hasn't already read it, I recommend Brent Spiner's book Fan Fiction: A Mem-Noir: Inspired by True Events. It's a fictional story of a stalker during his very real time playing Data on Star Trek. He narrates the audiobook so that is also a good way to go.

Also here is a whole buzzfeed article on gifts for people who love unicorns! say what you will about Buzzfeed, they are good at selling stuff.

Find an independent yarn store near you, and get her a gift card of $30-50+ to it. I know gift cards can come off lazy, but it will be major enabling for her to find out the store exists, go in and pet everything, and pick the exact right thing. You can even go with her and make it like an outing/date, especially if it’s farther away.

Don’t do that if you like having extra disposable income I guess

I don’t know anything about Atlanta, but from a quick google it looks like there are a bunch. The Craftivist sounds great, but you just want to go to any one with a good rating that’s near you. Just be sure it’s a yarn store and not a fabric store for sewing, Google likes to lump them together.

I don’t know how much enabling you want to do, but you absolutely can dye your own (wool) yarn using Kool-Aid or gel food coloring after watching a couple YouTube videos. I don’t think you can sense the size of the rabbit hole opening up before you
