https://www.wwlp.com/news/local-news/ct-installs-basketball-capital-of-the-word-sign-at-mass-border/

I went to buy weed in Massachusetts a few weeks ago and upon reentry to my beautiful Land of Steady Habits noticed a new highway sign promoting Connecticut as The Basketball Capital of the World. While I’m certainly proud of UConn’s championships I feel like this is a weirdly antagonistic dig at our neighbors to the north, given MA’s history as the birthplace of basketball and home of the Celtics who have won more championships than anyone.

Apparently there’re also signs at the NY border proclaiming the state the pizza capital and at the RI border naming the state the submarine capital. Both of which seem…vaguely antagonistic also??

I think we can all agree that massholes, New Yorkers, and those weird loving Rhodies are jerks and shouldn’t be allowed in our wonderful state, but these signs also seem specifically intended to needlessly stir poo poo with our neighbors which I’m not sure is a great use of taxpayer money….

2. Restore the Western Reserve.

3. We really shouldn't be trash talking the other states when we have stuff to fix.

4. They switched over to a mileage based numbering system which had a small but consequential effect on the exit numbers.

Yeah they’re dumb as gently caress meme-y :troll: bullshit.

How’s the weed? I’m going up to MA tomorrow and thinking to re-up with better cheaper weed on the way back.

Yeah I live along route 9 and the exits changing from order to mileage has been pissing me off. Both systems have their benefit but changing from one to the other is arbitrary as gently caress and also a waste of money.
Also can we please add Reclaiming Fishers Island as one of your bullet points along with the southwick jog and returning the western reserve( #justice4pennamitewars)?

Bud is so, so much cheaper in mass. I had a coupon I didn’t know about and got an ounce of a solid hybrid for $60.

:haibrow:

The only argument I've heard that makes any sense is the mileage based makes it easier for cops to find you.

It's just more logical overall. What does "Exit 9" mean compared to Exit 49 which is on mile 49 of the road?

Don't get me started on exit 9A, 9B, 9C, etc. I think that exit number was just picked in order when they designed the highway.

As a really scenic historical artifact of a bygone era of American travel? Definitely, though a lot of the beautiful bridges are in dire need of preservation work.

As a means to actually transit somewhere efficiently? Lmao no

I don't think anyone in Rhode Island cares about submarines. They had one in Providence and it sank. Like, unintentionally. No, the real antagonizing sign on the RI border is the fireworks store sign, when you can't buy real fireworks in either state.

Mile-based exit numbers have been a Federal requirement since 2009, and the signs get replaced when they're at end-of-life. Literally every other state is doing it so may as well not be weird.

Worcester's actually pretty cool, kept a lot of the weird vibe that Boston lost when it went techbro. If you're looking for "Weird bumfuck areas in MA to interact with", Northampton is still super weird and cool.

Well, that’s a blast from the past. Broadway Pizza, not the H. My first year in college, I lived on North campus, but most of my classes were on South campus so I spent a lot of time skirting the Acre if I didn’t want to wait for the bus.
