... okay fine, technically it was at a house in Luxembourg and not Nancy's actual house (although I think her real house has stairs too), and yeah I made this thread partly because I wanted to make the stairs joke, but still.

I didn't see mention of this in the Trumplol thread, although I'm not sure how much it counts as "politics in GBS" either. Hopefully not at all.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/nancy-pelosi-hospitalized-after-injury-on-overseas-trip/

CBS News posted:

Washington — Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been hospitalized after sustaining an injury during a trip to Luxembourg as part of a congressional delegation, her office said Friday.

"While traveling with a bipartisan Congressional delegation in Luxembourg to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi sustained an injury during an official engagement and was admitted to the hospital for evaluation," spokesperson Ian Krager said in a statement. "Speaker Emerita Pelosi is currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals."

Sources familiar with the matter say Pelosi injured her left leg in a fall. Krager declined to specify the nature or severity of the injury but said Pelosi continues to work from the hospital and "looks forward to returning home to the U.S. soon." The news outlet RTL Luxembourg reported that she had been taken to Kirchberg Hospital in the northeast of Luxembourg City.

Pelosi, 84, served as Democratic leader in the House for 20 years, including two stints as speaker, before stepping aside two years ago. She won another term to represent her San Francisco district in Congress in November, and remains an influential party figure, with the title of speaker emerita.

A total of 18 lawmakers of both parties traveled to Luxembourg to commemorate the Battle of the Bulge, the last major German offensive on the western front during World War II.

The group was led by GOP Rep. Michael McCaul, the outgoing chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, who wrote on X that he was "disappointed Speaker Emerita Pelosi won't be able to join the rest of our delegation's events this weekend as I know how much she looked forward to honoring our veterans." He wrote that he was "confident she will be back on her feet in no time."

The lawmakers met with the grand duke of Luxembourg earlier in the day on Friday, according to photos on the grand duke's Instagram account.

tl;dr: Basically Nancy Pelosi was staying at a house in Luxembourg on a congressional trip, fell down some stairs at said house, suffered injuries to her hip and left leg requiring hospitalization and possibly other injuries, and doctors think she'll need surgery although she is apparently reluctant to get it and might refuse it. She also hasn't decided whether to get treatment and/or surgery in Europe or wait until she returns to the US and have them done here (and yeah if she chooses to do the latter, the CEO shooting/UnitedHealthcare jokes write themselves).

Honestly... this is actually kind of a complicated case and decision for Pelosi, so I can't say I blame her for being on the fence about having surgery, and there's a few reasons why:

1. Nancy Pelosi is old, and her age means that there is an increased risk of her not waking up from the anesthesia, as well as potentially life-threatening complications during treatment following surgery. Then again, there's also risks if she doesn't get surgery, and it sounds like they're still evaluating the pros and cons of both scenarios right now.

2. She probably suffered at least one major fracture or bone break, and possibly worse than Mitch McConnell suffered a couple of years ago. Unfortunately I don't have a link to a study on-hand, but about 5 out of 6 seniors who suffer fractures end up dying within one year of the injury, from complications that are normally almost impossible to prevent or stop ahead of time. Granted both Pelosi and McConnell are members of US Congress and have access to better healthcare than normal people, but it's still a pretty high rear end risk and I'm honestly still kinda surprised that McConnell made it through the whole year in his case (despite his two live-TV stroke-out moments).

3. Flying Nancy back to the US in her current state is not likely a great idea. I can't imagine being at high altitude with those kinds of injuries is very safe. A boat or ship might be a different story, but would take longer to arrive, and if she doesn't want treatment or surgery in Europe then I doubt she wants it on a ship either.

4. Nancy does need to get back to the US ASAP for Congress Stuff, so I can see her not wanting to hang around Europe for lengthy medical treatment or surgery, but it sounds like whatever injuries she suffered are the kind that need fixing Right The gently caress Now or she could literally die, especially at her age. It sounds like her choices are to either (A) stay in Europe just long enough to get whatever she absolutely needs done immediately out of the way and then take care of everything else once she's back in America, or (B) go back to America immediately and have everything done here. Option (A) would be by far the best for Nancy's health, but comes with a shitload of unknowns that could make her timetable for staying in Europe anywhere from a few days (just to get her stabilized for the return trip) to multiple months (if it turns out "just to get her stabilized" requires way more than that), and they're not likely gonna know any poo poo like what she absolutely needs done immediately OR how long it's gonna take to do it until they open 'er up and look under the proverbial hood after she's already signed the hospital paperwork and is too far into it to back out... if they ever figure it out at all. And Nancy only has about one month to get back to America before Trump 2: Return of Trump happens in January. Meanwhile Option (B) would get Nancy back to the States faster and may allow her to get treated while serving her congressional duties (like "being present for votes" and "doing nothing else"), but would risk further problems arising both from air travel back to the US and from delaying whatever treatment/surgery/etc she needs RIGHT NOW that much longer, which could very possibly hurt her prognosis and maybe even her lifespan. Honestly the hospital ship idea sounds a lot better than Options (A) and (B) if you think about it. Technically there is an Option (C) where Nancy stays in Europe for the full duration of her treatment, surgery if she gets it, and recovery, but......... yeeeeeeeeaaaaaahhh that poo poo ain't gonna happen.

This may end up being a story to keep an eye on.

So glad we send politicians on paid vacations to Europe under the guise of remembering a battle that's not even covered on school standardized tests anymore. I mean, it would be money well spent if every such trip ended like this. It could be like Elves returning to Valinor. "Sorry, Senator, you had a good run but it's time for your commemorative trip."
