Bushiroad's summary of Ave Mujica posted:

"Will you give me the rest of your life?"

After losing everything in a single night, Sakiko Togawa reaches out toward an even deeper abyss, one that will drag everyone around her down as well.

Gathering the lives of girls burdened with their own troubles and desires, Sakiko raises the curtain on a perfect masquerade.

"Welcome to the world of Ave Mujica."

On a stage where sorrow, death, fear, love—even the solace of forgetting—are stripped away, will their masks be torn off and shatter into oblivion, or will they...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Souwq8yepWQ

This is the thread for AVE MUJICA - THE DIE IS CAST, the sequel/companion to 2023's BanG Dream: It's MyGO!!!!!.

Q. This has something to do with BanG Dream? What's that?

A. BanG Dream is the name for the media project that includes Ave Mujica and four other seasons of anime, plus related movie, music, manga, and mobile game releases.

Bushiroad has apparently started dropping BanG Dream from their English-language marketing for this show, which makes sense to me. Maybe there's a Japanese pun in there but I have no idea what it means. Maybe someone else can explain.

Q. This is the fifth season of BanG Dream. Do I need to watch the others?

A. You don't need to watch the first three seasons--you'll catch some references and cameos but it isn't necessary--however, ADTRW's 2023 Anime of the Year It's MyGO!!!!! is required because the two series share characters and storylines.

That said, expect to see spoilers for any part of the franchise up to now in this thread.

Q. Okay, how do I watch this?

A. Ave Mujica's first episode airs on January 2nd, 2025, and Thursdays thereafter.

The official English release will be available... well, we don't know where yet. The series was rumored to land on Crunchyroll (as MyGO!!!!! did) but it's not yet on their Winter 2025 lineup. We'll see. edit: yes it's on Crunchyroll.

It's a good re-watch, I'd recommend it. There are some character beats and humor that are much more obvious the second time around. Taki, for instance, is often very dramatic but a lot of what she does is also pretty funny.

Also episode 10 is one of my favorite episodes of anime ever.

The BanG in BanG Dream is short for Band + Girls, that's about it. It's an interesting choice to drop the titling now for sure.

This is a collection of translated Ave Mujica material, including stuff from their pre-launch ARG and the intermissions from the live shows. Pretty interesting stuff, and I wonder how much is going to play into the actual anime if anything.

Are they joking or is everyone at Bandori crazy talented, because this seems nuts?

Watase [Mutsumi]: I started learning guitar when casted for Ave Mujica. I’ve been asked a lot if starting with a 7-stringed guitar was hard for me, but since that’s what I started with, that’s all I know so it doesn’t seem too bad. (laughs) When I heard about Ave Mujica being a thing, I thought to myself, “I really want to try this out.”

Okada [Umiri]: I took some piano lessons in elementary school, but that’s all I would say I have for instrumental experience. But three months prior to being told about Ave Mujica, I thought to myself, “I should really get a leg up on my job as a seiyuu, let’s learn a new skill,” so I picked up bass. Getting told about this project not long after really felt like fate.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is Takao [Sakiko], who's played piano since she was 3.

The AveMuji subs definitely seem to be a step down then. A lot of stilted lines and some straight-up bad lines ("a blessing or a doom" lol). Given they've started releasing a lot of the promotional/supplementary materials in English/Chinese when it was previously only Japanese I'm wondering if they also moved the anime translation in-house at the same time.

Or I just grabbed a bad release but I'm pretty sure SubsPlease always go for the CR release over the non-English streaming services

it might also be that avemujica's dialogue is way more complicated and trying to speak in metaphors versus mygo's dialog being more direct and emotional.

my release also didn't have environmental text which is going to suck rear end for this show - can't imagine watching mygo and not getting the soyo google search about getting blocked. did subsplease or cr have it?

i also liked the ep - felt like the sakiko setup was toeing the line of being overly dramatic but through strong direction never felt like too much. hype for more bangdream. let's fuckin go.

Apparently Muse Asia translates the lyrics and text and otherwise uses the same script as the CR release. The lyrics are obviously a licensing thing, though it is extra insane that there are literally lyrics translations already made but CR are still being told "nope sorry you can't use those" (though I guess the same was true with GBC), but I can't imagine the text is anything other than a gently caress-up from either CR or whoever provided them with the subs.

Wow, I was a little worried that I might have set my expectations too high (MyGO wasn't anything special until episode 3) but this debut was great.

We needed to see some Sakiko backstory here, and even though it's thrown at us at lightning speed, better that than drawing it out for a long time.

Poor girl is Going Through Some poo poo. Hard to see her say that the only thing she has left is Ave Mujica when her best friend, who would probably take a bullet for her (and already has, socially) is sitting right there next to her.

And, credit to the writers, in a world of smartphones and social media it would've been impossible to keep the band members a secret, so they just dispense with it in the very first episode. Can't really blame Nyamu though. If you're going to do it at some point anyway, why not Budokan?

I guess the TLDR is:

Now that we know the full story, did Sakiko have to be so cruel when disbanding Crychic? I understand why she wouldn't want anyone to know, but did she have to break everyone's hearts?

She probably felt it was the easiest way to sever all ties with the group. And what was really going on would inevitably come out if she remained in touch. (What she did was still pretty extreme, but this is a drama)

sakiko and her father basically have the exact same damage. they assume their problems and burdens are so unique and terrible that letting anyone in would only ruin their lives or make things worse for them, too. see sakiko's dad going 'im just making your life worse....' sakiko tries to overcompensate for those feelings via being an overachiever, her father just drinks them away, but they both end up in the same place of pushing away the people around them. sakiko's dad pushes her away and then sakiko immediately goes 'ALL I HAVE IS AVEMUJICA" directly to the one person whos always there for her no matter what, basically instantly replicating the behavior.
