Oh, two other things I liked.

1. I guess MyGO got put through the wringer enough in their own show, so now it's all sunshine and rainbows for them. Outside of flashbacks the AM scenes are all black, maroon, or dull... meanwhile everything is bright and shiny over at Ring. Sakiko is on the verge of breakdown at any given moment, while Tomori is currently working on... shapes.

2. It's nice to see Soyo and Anon hang out, but it gave me a chuckle that Soyo was blatantly not Anon's first choice (and might not have even been her second choice if Taki was interested).

I can't decide if no subtitles on text messages or no subtitles on lyrics is worse. Big downgrade that unnecessarily marred my enjoyment of what was an absolute banger of a first episode.

sakiko and her father basically have the exact same damage. they assume their problems and burdens are so unique and terrible that letting anyone in would only ruin their lives or make things worse for them, too. see sakiko's dad going 'im just making your life worse....' sakiko tries to overcompensate for those feelings via being an overachiever, her father just drinks them away, but they both end up in the same place of pushing away the people around them. sakiko's dad pushes her away and then sakiko immediately goes 'ALL I HAVE IS AVEMUJICA" directly to the one person whos always there for her no matter what, basically instantly replicating the behavior.

Endorph, this is really perceptive and well explained.

They didn't translate text messages or any other on-screen text like posters or signs. Not all on-screen text needs subtitles, of course, but there's plenty where it's nice for context and some (like the aforementioned text messages) where it's pretty critical to understanding the show. They also didn't subtitle the lyrics, presumably for licensing reasons, but this also hurts comprehension imo.

I’m really curious how these crappy licensor side subtitles actually get made. Like who are they hiring? Translators who don’t work in fiction? English teachers? Production assistants who are relatively good with English???

these subs read to me like first draft from someone who's ESL. the general thrust is fine but it needs proofreading and refining, and theres not that good an ear for how english flows.

Well, out of universe, to me it seems like Morfonica only came into existence for Kidani and Bushi and Hibiki to introduce Amanesu to their stable of 2.5D seiyuu (and some people took it real badly going off of the harassment she got online; her singing with rather rough to start off with). Oh, and to introduce a new rich girls school in universe to place characters in outside of the already established ones of Hanasakigawa and Haneoka.

Maybe also to give Oyu some performance experience before D4DJ as well, and give Mika some acknowledgment as Meguchi’s (and Hasshi’s?) drums teacher. Getting Ayasa involved was pretty cool though, I had been following her violin covers for a while before that.

Morf always did seem like the least popular live Bandori band to me, even taking into account their relative newness, before MyGo!!!!! took off in China for whatever reason.

generally: girls who are musicians navigate the drama of their personal lives and being in bands together. recent entries have had really solid writing and direction. it's part of a larger multimedia franchise, but you can start with mygo and get the vast majority of it.

Out of the main universe live bands (so not including Mugendai Mewtype here), they definitely are. There was some additional stink around them being added to Garupa (the mobile game) first before RAISE A SUILEN who'd existed IRL for two years already which I don't think helped their likeability at first. And debuting in 2020 with everything that year brought in terms of restrictions and cancellations of live concerts didn't help either.
I think in Japan popularity-wise, only Mashiro is really loved from the group, all the other characters just kind of exist.

I would’ve thought Rui would be somewhat popular with how known Ayasa is in Japan, but I guess that’s not guaranteed that seiyuu popularity transfers into character popularity. I guess Oyu would be more popular as Rinku from Happy Around than Nanami (had to look up her character’s name on Wikipedia) and Suguta Hina is better known for Marin from Bisque Doll (My Dress Up Darling) than Toko.

I had fallen off of Bandori as a whole prior to Covid (losing my account because of iPad shenanigans as I was heading to a Roselia DV and then being unable to get it back really didn’t help), but I did hear a bunch of the dislike of them being added to Garupa prior to RAS from friends who still played and from chatter at DVs. Then again, we never did get a Morf DV before Covid happened. I think the only Morf media I’ve seen is one of the Bandori movies that was screened at AnimeNYC a number of years back.

I got into MyGo late because of the aforementioned falling off, despite knowing and hanging out with a bunch of people who are still involved with it (besides yourself and people like the owner of the pretty much now dead Bandori fan Discord server), but watching it more or less got me back into Bandori. I still have no idea what the vtuber band of this franchise is though.

I know Amanesu’s singing was crazy rough when she debuted, but she’s def gotten better since then as her later songs and D4DJ work prove.

The problem with Rui is that her character is clearly going for some kind of "becoming less of an rear end in a top hat" arc but she hasn't had it yet and it doesn't seem like they've figured out how to make it happen. So she's just kind of unlikable.

I wonder if the plan is to have the morfs intersect with Ave/MyGO in some interesting way, but the band is more or less in limbo at present.

Morfonica and Poppin Party are in a weird holding pattern that they aren’t changing as much as other bands right now (like the current English Afterglow story has me invested cause of how the band graduating may change things). Just Poppin Party has years of being the lead band going for it where Morfonica doesn’t

My favorite deranged fan theory (which apparently got some play particularly among the Chinese fans as MyGO was ending) is that Mutsumi and Sakiko are secret sisters.

I guess I will eat crow if I’m wrong but I don’t think they’re related. But I do like that people are analyzing every scene like it’s from LOST or Severance or whatever.

Wow, another good episode. I want to watch it again but some first impressions:
  • Poor Mutsumi. Seemingly no one actually listens to her (expect for maybe Tomori, once, back in ep. 10).
  • I don't think I've ever had what would be diagnosed as a panic attack, but I've gotten close, and the show did well in presenting that feeling of the walls closing in and feeling trapped, helpless, and breathless.
  • Well the other half of Sumimi is going to be thrown overboard soon huh.
  • You get the sense Taki wants to be Tomori's knight, but she underestimates her. Tomori was more sad that Sakiko is hurting than that she ditched them for another band.
  • Oh look, even the cucumber patch is all shriveled up.
  • Umiri is so cool. Also she owns the largest iPad known to man.
  • I'm curious what people think about Nyamu.

Also, bonus angry Soyo:

Taki has a bad habit of projecting her own feelings onto Tomori. This is mostly played for laughs early in S1 with the Anon stuff but its a pretty consistent pattern of behavior for her. So when she's all 'Sakiko ditched us, right Tomori' she's revealing a bit more of herself than she intends to.

It's amusing that you've got MyGO where we're proactively trying to protect each other's feelings and then in Ave people don't notice Mutsumi's having a nervous breakdown RIGHT THERE IN THE ROOM.

Mutsumi’s breakdown was so good as we knew it was coming but nobody else did for a variety of reasons. The hand dropping like a doll with cut strings was as subtle as an explosion and great cause of it

incredible horrifying episode. ave mujica (and my go) is really really good at isolating characters while they're suffering to create dread, and this was like 22 straight minutes of us being trapped in mutsumi's headspace.

i think my favorite part of the show so far is: in my go the performances were often freeing, cathartic moments. in ave mujica whenever the avenged sevenfold riffs kick in you know someone in this band is about to be dragged down into something even worse.

its also funny that there's that one scene in mygo where mutsumi is like 'im not your carrier pigeon' at taki which is funny but mutsumi actually had the confidence to set that boundary and taki actually listened, and in this episode taki recognizes one of mutsumis issues (though not the extent of it) without even being there or having a conversation with her. meanwhile sakiko and nyamu just kind of lay into her. kinda makes it clear that taki and mutsumi actually did understand each other to an extent during crychic, which makes mutsumi ditching so sakiko wasnt alone even sadder

raana and nyamu are interesting mirrors because they both seem to enjoy attention (see raana just walking in, doing a guitar solo, and leaving) but raana mostly seems to enjoy attention as a 'yeah, i am pretty cool, huh' while nyamu seems to need attention to validate herself. basically raana uses attention as a way to justify her self-validation while nyamu cant self-validate without positive attention

there's also a very funny subtle contrast in a throwaway scene in mygo where raana barely even uses her phone and her phone is old and beat up and has a ton of scratches, and ghosts half her texts. meanwhile nyamu is checking her phone 24/7
