1. Silent Hill (Normal, Good+ ending)

This game loving owned. Feeling a little silly that I didn't get around to finishing it a couple days ago, but it was absolutely worth buttoning up after the fact. The sound design and art direction are S-tier. It feels like they really pushed the PS1 to the limit on this one and captured the psychological horror movie style and vibes almost perfectly. From a raw gameplay perspective, I hate the camera in this game, but it's drat near PERFECT as a way to sell the horror. The puzzles seem to come out of nowhere, but are extremely intuitive and pretty cool. The controls are janky and combat is occasionally frustrating, but the game's not very difficult and it absolutely showers you in healing items and ammo (on normal, anyway). Really cool game and I'm very happy I took the time to finish it.

1. King's Quest III: To Heir is Human. 205 out of 210 points.

more frustrating than 1 or 2, but also more ambitious and it was fun cooking up spells in the basement when everything works right. its dumb how many puzzles are solved by just recycling a screen and waiting for the right RNG event to happen, theres puzzles I solved but thought what I was doing was wrong. But then when I looked up a walkthrough I was on the right track and just had to like wait 6 minutes or keep trying it over and over again until i found the right dried acorn. fun time though. on to 4.

Many people have this as their favorite but best I can do is fourth place. X4 ain't a SNES game so it doesn't look or feel or sound right.

2. Etrian Odyssey HD. Expert difficulty. I rolled with

Survivalist / Protector / Dark Hunter
Alchemist / Medic

for the entire game. I have started multiple EO games and EO-spinoffs like PQ1&2, but never before ever actually beaten one. But today was the day, and I'm totally hooked. I loved the music, the floor themes, the way each stratum has its own little personality, the fun reveal at the end of the story, the grueling bosses that eventually become totally owned after a couple of levels and some tactical adjustments, the size of the dungeon etc. So happy to finally see one of these through. My team was drat unstoppable by the end and I wound up beating the final boss on my first try (everyone around level 62/63, not sure if that's overleved - I made sure to do all quests I could throughout the game so I felt pretty OP through the back half)

I was holding back resources since I was whupping his rear end so clean I figured there was goign to be a 2nd phase lol. Get owned!! I got lucky as hell and was able to land 3 bindings plus a boosted DH move where you do like 2000 damage on triple bound targets. sick as hell.

torn between doing what appears to be some post game content, theres a handful of new quests available, and rolling right into 2. I think I will keep playing 1 a bit and see if there are hosed up superbosses to find.

3. a) Castlevania (2nd loop)

Honestly not as good. The changes are slight, enemies in the first stages do max damage, there's more bats, medusa heads constantly in the 2nd block, and now fishmen can just spawn under you. But, hell, there was a retroachievement for it.

1) Dave the Diver. very cute, impeccable visual and sound design, great core gameplay and sense of humor. makes the continuous upgrade and research loop very entertaining with the cut scenes, looked forward to it every loop.

my one complaint is that at the end of the game each dive took the better part of an hour just from trying to keep upgrading my most profitable/tasty dishes, plus the huge amount of side content you feel like you have to keep up with between the farm, fish farm, seaweed farm, seahorse races, GYAO!, staff hiring and upgrades, filling out MarinCa... the mental overhead became more than I wanted and started feeling like a chore. obviously a huge labor of love though, really fun.

No changes at all in 5 or 6 either. The Medusa heads and bats on nearly every screen in 1 through 4 did have an impact though, especially in that one spike crusher room. Fun to experience once.

1. Sonic Adventure 2

Had the most infuriating thing happen at the last boss where Shadow ran out of rings after the final hit and it counted it as a death and had me restart.

That room taught me that if, during the death animation, you fall into a 1-up, then you totally count as having picked it up and don't game over.

thinkin about it th thing i like most about metaphor is that its a freakin new thing with creativity behind it. if this did come out in the ps2 golden age itd be on everyones retrospective hey remember this game? its pretty sweet. lists with nocturne and like shadow heart or whatever but thats because clever creative big budget rpgs were comin out multiple times a year. its rare now we get as many as we did this year and double rare when ones not a sequel. we need to put a spending cap on AAA video games

2. Mega Man X5 (Improvement Project Addendum hack)

This game could've been really cool if it didn't suck so much. The Mega Man X formula was in danger of growing stale so Capcom took it to strange new places. They reached into their bag of bells and whistles and pulled out a stack of whoopee cushions and a clown wig.
