Why are the mods/admins obsessed with keeping around posters besides me who suck and are a drag to everyone around them? It sounds like this person should’ve been dumped long before.

as someone who was an IK for a bit, it's easy to get tunnel vision when you're trying to make a habit of smoothing things over without pushing buttons. there were a couple thread regulars that frequently butted heads with other posters, and i spent a lot of time sorting out their disagreements or soothing their rage over PMs instead of just putting them in time-out. the constant exposure to them and their problems wound up making me sympathetic to their situations, and as a result i often gave them more patience and understanding than i should've.

moderation is a very difficult and thankless job even when you've got the appropriate training. it's not surprising that very human errors like cutting someone way too much slack happens occasionally.

it's the only measure of energy I remembered.

The big problem was you had offsite forums full of banned posters trying to brainstorm ways to stir poo poo up in here. It was too much effort to remember biographical details about "shitposter #8 on the internet forum you volunteer to mod", and it seemed increasingly silly to spend time and mental effort on it when I had a life and a family.

So when they started Photoshopping pictures of me into weird poo poo, and the vibe around here got weird and hostile even with the regulars, and I realized I had been out of the military as long as I had been in it, I figured yeah the juice is not worth the squeeze

Speaking of! We missed this story in December, and...

https://www.lonestarlive.com/news/2024/12/florida-woman-faces-15-years-for-saying-deny-defend-depose-to-insurance-company.html

quote:

A Florida woman faces second-degree felony charges for ending a phone call with her insurance company by saying, “delay, deny, depose” — the same three words found in bullet casings retrieved at the murder scene of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York last week.

On Tuesday, Dec. 10, Brianna Boston was speaking to a Blue Cross Blue Shield representative, as she unsuccessfully tried to challenge a denial of her insurance claim.

According to police, Boston ended the phone call by saying, “Delay, deny, depose. You people are next.”

The 42-year-old reportedly told authorities that she did not own any firearms and was not a threat, but said “health care companies played games and deserved karma from the world because they are evil.”

Lakeland police Chief Sam Taylor said the woman had “been in the world long enough” that she should know the impact of her words.

“She readily admitted that, ‘Yeah that’s exactly what I said but I didn’t mean anything by it,’” Taylor said. “Well, you don’t get to pull that back after you say it.”

Boston was charged with threats to conduct a mass shooting or act of terrorism, a second-degree felony. If convicted, she could face up to 15 years in prison.

I guess Luigi scared the suits enough to order their piggies to make sure the rabble know our place.

Fortunately the rabble have options. $92k raised for legal fund so far. Of course, it's definitely meant to send a message when the judge sets bond at $100,000 despite this being a clear first amendment issue and Boston not having any weapons.
