I've heard this a few times and this I feel this is ridiculous. Joe Rogan "works" because he's a blank slate that doesn't think critically about... well anything that I can tell outside of weed, psychotropics, and martial arts. Dude will nod along with anything outside of the most blatantly obvious 'ism's.

Now whether he is a grifter who will bring literally anyone on that will pop a rating and to do that he just needs to sit back and put any idiot on his show, or he's genuinely a curious dude who just wants to interview people and takes the approach, that actual mainstream media outlets take, that it's better to just nod along with the interviewee and only push back if they say something entirely hosed is still up for debate in my eyes. A "Leftist" or even a "Facist" Joe Rogan doesn't work, because such people aren't going to be easy to listen to for joe douchebag on the street.

https://www.reddit.com/r/youtubedl/comments/cjjzeu/list_of_joe_rogan_experience_guests_by/

Rogan puts Nazis online in one of the biggest platforms in his type of medium. A "Blank Slate" that platforms Nazis is a Nazi platform, doesn't matter if he gets Bernie Sanders on there once or something.

I mean doesn't this view of things simply cede a platform to the nazis if they're ever able to get access? when we're talking about someone that has a viewership as large as Joe Rogans, it seems like it would be worth it to try and displace the nazis rather than condemn the entire platform?

For the record I loving hate Joe Rogan and can't stand his fans but they do seem like a large, impressionable group of people. When I was in law school I had to sit through morons repeating talking points that they heard on his show about different topics. If he is as amenable to all sides as some people seem to think, it sounds like a potentially valuable avenue to reach people, nazis or no.

I get your point but going through the list in the link I am not really seeing a lot of leftists etc.

Rogan is one of the major reasons (IMO) that we have people not taking vaccines, etc. The platform does vastly more harm than good. If you want to try to engage with it to take advantage of it, you're still helping perpetuate a platform that signal boosts people that want you dead. I'm not sure how you square that circle. It's like saying Fox News is fine if they just keep bringing out a democrat now and then.

Is this what happened?

Were people from the left invited and declined to attend in real numbers? Or did Rogan's staff just invite loads of right wingers and throw in an occasional lib?

Look at the link you posted, political dudes of any flavor don't even crack the top twenty guest appearances, and by weight just kinda scanning the list quickly slammed together it's probably far less than twenty percent. It's all comedians, fight nerds, and health grifters. Dudes probably an idiot of some flavor and I think the world would be better off with out his podcast, but the whole "The Left Needs a Joe Rogan" misses the point, because Joe Rogan isn't a politics show, it's just some stoners podcast where he interviews whoever the gently caress.

A "Blank Slate" that platforms Nazis is a Nazi platform. It doesn't matter how many other non-Nazi's are on the show. You've got Alex Jones and Sargon of Akaad and poo poo on there man, poo poo's bad.

e: I'll let it go, I've said as much as I need to on this one.

idk that putting more people on Rogan is the solution. If you look around at basically all other mainstream online content, it's signalboosting right wingers, Rogan doesn't seem to be an exception.

Stultus Maximus posted:

Which is why it's probably better to phrase it as "the left needs to start showing up on something similar to Joe Rogan's show."

I think that would be a good bit better, but you'd need a real audience.

I really get the feel that like half of you, fortunately for you happy for you, where only passingly familiar with Rogan until recently and think its some hour hate fest like alex jones or something. Us nerds who do grapple and punch sports have had this guy infront of us and our gym friends for years.

Dude as far as Ive been able to tell is only critical when it comes to weed, aliens, and fight sports and has some tragic opinions on transpeople participating in gender divisions in fight sports. If you say legalize it, I stand by aliens rights to exist, and mall karate sucks and can keep a high person from going off topic you can sit up there and say pretty much anything. Honestly itd be like saying nbc is a radicilization pipe line because they had putin and trump interviews and the interviewers where milque toast little dweebs

I was familiar with JRE from several years ago, around the time he started promoting antivaxx views.

Despite having multiple people on, telling him he was dumb and wrong about vaccines (Bill Burr masterfully threw it in his face more than once) yet Rogan still is an ardent antivaxxer. So no, I don't view him as some dumb blank slate that only parrots the views of his last guest, because he's been consistent on this point for years, and it's caused real legitimate harm and deaths in our country. So yeah sorry I am not going to view the guy as some benign thing to be leveraged. He's a hostile force that actively harms americans by propagating ignorant views.

If yall are going to keep saying that the Dems need to get on JRE more to make a difference, then maybe show cases where Dems are saying they will not go on the show (not people itt like me who do not matter) , or have tried to go on the show and been denied. The only case of this I can recall is the Harris campaign ended up not going on but this was also in the 11th hour of the race and they were working on a campaign with just a few months prep time instead of the years it normally would have.

Sadly paywalled on WaPo but CDC, NIH etc have been told to stop all public communication.

This includes CDC's morbidity and mortality weekly reports, which are one of the best conduits of information on emerging infection numbers and used by clinicians / public health officials. In the face of a potential bird flu outbreak, this is the dumbest and most nonsensical thing you could do. Like, this is dumber than anything I can think of that was done during covid for public health strategy. If birdflu starts spreading between humans, this will cost lives, for absolutely no reason and make something that we can very very easily contain and control, into an actual problem.

For what it's worth, I read earlier that the communications pause isn't a huge surprise, as that happened with the 2016 transition too. There are a few experts chalking it up to a messy / disorganized transition on the Donnie side.

What's weird and different is the open-ended communications pause with no unpause date. That's completely new and a big ol' red flag. And naturally the pause isn't clear about what continues and what doesn't, since it's an RFK Jr wingnut now in charge of comms. The relevant portion:

As always, I hope you are correct.

The biggest issue with the "pause" apart from if its temporary or not is that tomorrow was going to be one of the first bigger reports on H5N1 going out and now that is not happening. Putting out fires or epidemics works best if you do it at the beginning, so delaying and blocking information up front can make a small problem into a big one.

Donald Trump’s return to the White House is already having a big impact at the $47.4 billion U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), with the new administration imposing a wide range of restrictions, including the abrupt cancellation of meetings including grant review panels. Officials have also ordered a communications pause, a freeze on hiring, and an indefinite ban on travel.

The moves have generated extensive confusion and uncertainty at the nation’s largest research agency, which has become a target for Trump’s political allies. “The impact of the collective executive orders and directives appears devastating,” one senior NIH employee says.

Today, for example, officials halted midstream a training workshop for junior scientists, called off a workshop on adolescent learning minutes before it was to begin, and canceled meetings of two advisory councils. Panels that were scheduled to review grant proposals also received eleventh-hour word that they wouldn’t be meeting.
