No one gives a gently caress about loan forgiveness for minority veterans that started a business in a low income neighborhood, and that's before the other side says something you wanted to hear even if they contradicted it 10 seconds later. Just say whatever it takes to win the election. People are loving stupid and vote based on vibes anyway, just roll with it. Worst case they're gonna vote you out anyway. But the Democratic Party doesn't seem to actually give a gently caress about being in power. I mean I don't think this is strictly true. All over this site you have people demeaning the Dems for failing to deliver on campaign promises and using that failure as a basis for critique and justification of not voting for them. The reality is that the voters for both parties have very different standards, with the Dems being held to a standard of competency and the Republicans literally having no bottom to speak of. People that refuse to vote for Democrats for whatever reason are basically complicit in whatever actions the Republicans take, is my position. The notion that the Dems should also completely abandon the norms and practices that our government has operated under for 250 years seems like losing policy to me. It's the last vestiges of the New Deal form of governance that is basically going to be completely eliminated by the end of Trump's term. It seems likely we will lose some parts of medicaid, some parts of Social Security, have additional tax burdens, and face some significant unnecessary inflation, which is really just an excuse for the Republicans to further cut our tax base back so that they can justify deeper entitlement cuts. This is effectively what people voted for, whether they realize it or not, and I'm not going to blame the Democrats for "failing to reach out" to people who are going to be directly harmed by these consequences. Somehow all these individuals that were nervous about the price of eggs were able to spend record amounts on holiday travel, gifts, and leisure activities like skiing. The numbers make it seem like a total rationalization. I've certainly lost any optimism about the country coming around. We are headed for a neo-gilded age and it doesn't look like there is any way out of it, at least in the near term.

I mean what choice did Chuck really have? Certainly the most vocal American leftists said they had 0 interest in voting for the Dems. At that point you either alienate a different part of your coalition or try to find what votes you can get. Its a totally self-fulfilling prophecy, and has been for the past 20+ years. The American left is prone to drawing unpopular lines in the sand and saying that there are no circumstances under which they will allow that line to be crossed. That kind of inflexibility makes them an un-ideal target as a voting demographic. Nancy Pelosi is an imminently competent politician. She delivered Single Payer healthcare in the house and generally has played the hand she's been dealt very effectively. It's an open secret that everyone in Congress trades on inside information. All and all I think Biden did a pretty good job, with the notable exception of Palestine. The country is certainly in a far better position than how he received it, and I would imagine we're going to take quite a tumble from here. Reading about a bunch of the proposed Trump tax-cuts and things are going to get a lot harder for a lot of poor people who relied on any kind of government grant or assistance. Ditto for people on fixed incomes. Hopefully this isn't as bad as the economic shock therapy that Russia got in the 90s, but it really seems like they're going to try to strip down every benefit they can in order to push through more tax cuts, including things like maybe capping lifetime medicaid benefits. poo poo that could and would actually kill Americans. The last 4 years saw the first increases in real wages across all income levels in a couple of generations. There was no new direct involvement in major international conflicts. Federal agencies were generally decently managed. There was no significant corruption. It don't really matter what they want anymore. We are set for a massive upheaval of norms in the US from SCOTUS alone. The fact that Trump is getting a second term and has both houses means that many forms of government educational assistance are going to be degraded or eliminated. Even programs that don't get put on the chopping block this round will likely be in jeopardy as future governments have to reconcile the deficit. Raising taxes is never popular. Throw on all the inflation that's going to arise from the tariffs and things could really get bad quickly. If we run into any kind of recession while this is all going on... who knows what could happen. Hopefully there is nothing brewing like 2008 while these fuckers have all three branches of government.

Ronwayne posted:You asked why people hate the dems and then said the answer doesn't count, so I dunno where to go. This kind of gaslighting is ANOTHER major part of why people hate the dems. I don't know how to convince you of the howling shriek of despair that permeates everything while dems and their supporters think we can go back to some kind of West Wingian style of norms and decorum. We are less than 5 years away from when police stations burned in america, the social contract is held together with snot and dreams and the last of the dreams just evaporated. I'm pretty sure it was exclusively dem state administrations that ever tried to reign in the police and security state? For their efforts they got painted as soft on crime and voted out of office, because many of the same people who demanded those reforms refused to stick up for those policies because there was a new problem that precluded them from voting. Over and over this process has played out at small scale, and the result is generally that the reactionary right gains ground because people complain the dems aren't doing enough. The focus is constantly on the Dem establishment amd how they're "failing to earn votes" even as they stick their necks out on policy that is outside the mainstream. It makes total sense that they don't court the vote of the American left - they've shown themselves to be an entirely unreachable block. Their singular response to any situation is to withhold their vote and force the center left to cede ground to the right, all while whining that nobody is doing what needs to be done. Its old as gently caress and entirely predictable at this point. Stultus Maximus posted:Republicans lie about who is responsible for problems (immigrants, the woke mind virus), they lie about their policy proposals making things better (lower taxes, deregulation, persecution of sexual minorities), and sometimes they lie about the reality that their target audience can't verify (San Francisco is covered in ten feet of homeless poo poo, Portland was burned to the ground and turned into gay socialist tent camps). The dems said that the economy was doing well, generally, because wage growth was outpacing inflation. I don't recall them telling people to shut up and die in the street like has been suggested over and over again. They literally passed the legislation that reigned in inflation and brought forward a bunch of green power subsidies in order to kill two birds with one stone, and they got jack poo poo for credit for doing so. The republicans are literally chopping up every single tax-break and grant that goes to fund poor folks in order to further enrich the richest guys on the planet, and nobody seems to notice or talk about it. It seems like every one has been trained to react violently to any Dem failures and shrug their shoulders as the fascists sharpen their knives. It's loving crazy. Edit: To be clear, the republican strategy is literally going to steal money out of the pockets of just about everyone on this board, while simultaneously making essentials like food harder to afford. Its a double whammy that is going to be absolutely devastating for the working poor and harmful for just about everyone up to the top tax bracket. The whole thing was entirely predictable and foreseeable, but the focus seems to remain on the fact that the Dems didn't bow and scrape hard enough when people said prices were hurting them. The double standard is totally bizarre and untenable in my mind. Grip it and rip it fucked around with this message at 18:51 on Jan 18, 2025 |

It seems like we need some kind of charismatic individual to unite everyone to the left of the nazis, but I just don't see that ever happening. I used to think that AOC was going to be a shoe-in for presidential politics by the end of the 2020s, but now that possibility seems further and further away. In large part I think I had been expecting the US to correct it's course since the 2000s. The Bush and Trump administrations were both so catastrophic that I couldn't imagine that people would willingly vote for more, but here we are. In terms of international politics we are destroying the position of the US as the leader of the free world, and in doing so destabilizing the extant world order. This naturally is going to lead to a re-arrangement of norms that we are already witnessing with events like the War in Ukraine and the genocide in Palestine. Eventually, in the US continues ceding its influence and position, I would expect that a war will break out with a near peer competitor. And everything Trump has done seems almost intended to accelerate into the eventuality. I just don't get it.

I think when you look at how close the races in the midwest were, the idea of turning down any platform seems even more egregious. The Presidency has become too dependent on middle american attitudes to not try and reach out to voters absolutely everywhere you can. The battleground states have very different norms and culture than most of the Dem strongholds - everyone needs to recognize that there is a need to appeal to the most middle of the road frm voter possible, and tailor campaigns accordingly. Being in power and preventing the Republicans from executing their agenda is just as important as proactive policy execution at this point. Every cycle they seem more deadset on identifying "Out" groups to further marginalize. I would think that these policies are part if what has driven Dem voters out of battleground and red states and into Dem enclaves, along with economic incentives. Something needs to be done to reverse or compensate for this phenomena if we want to rebalance the EC. Grip it and rip it fucked around with this message at 18:06 on Jan 19, 2025 |
