Mainstream reporting is that the New Orleans attacker got out of the truck firing an AR-15 and had at least one IED that failed to go off. Plus an ISIS flag. Sounds like the NOPD dropped him pretty quickly, so I guess you do, in fact, have to hand it to them. Definitely a shittier scenario than my initial guess of "drunk idiot does the gas/brake mixup".

Quackles posted:I don't know if that's common public perception or not, but I think even promising doing things could have been of some help. The political reality of the American system pretty much guarantees that the Dems need to be a big tent party to even have a shot at a majority. This means you have to choose between living with Manchin/Sinema types who will vote with you some of the time, or they will join the other side and vote with you none of the time. If you even have that, remember that the Senate is structurally biased against you and in a 6-3 decision... So now you've got two choices: Promise things you know you're likely to get cockblocked on ("where's my check, Joe?") OR not make promises you aren't sure you can keep ("these guys have nothing"). Not that you need to feel sorry for the Dems but a party that simply tries to vibe through this reality is on a road to nowhere. The whole system is rotten, and I don't know how to change it, but everyone keeps thinking the Dems could pull a rabbit out of their hat if they would just [______]. It ignores the fact that the right has spent literally generations doing their absolute best to make sure that there are no rabbits.

That's not what I said, and the point wasn't even about Manchin and Sinema specifically. It's that they're the most visible symptoms of a broader problem with the American electorate and representation system, which a magical not-Dem party will still have to contend with. The Incorruptible Puppies and Kitty Kisses Party will still have to overcome 51 +/- 2 Senators' worth of Americans believing that they emanated directly from Satan's butthole, and that literally trillions of dollars have been spent on achieving this over the better part of a century.

The Behind the Bastards series about Jobs (which includes that anecdote among many others) is shocking even if you already knew Jobs was a monumental rear end in a top hat. He definitely could have made Musk cry though, because Jobs had the "normie" adulation that Musk so desperately craves and also would have been a complete dick to him. Not because Jobs was good, but because he was a dick who was only impressed with himself.

The ideological big tent that has become the far right was built on the margins in drips and drabs over decades. Many of them were once somewhat normal, potentially reachable people. And new voters come of age every day. You really wanna just cede a channel that large to the far right? Start now or never. The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time was today. Kaiser Schnitzel posted:but if you want to win elections, you've got to talk to voters in a way they will listen to. Honestly itd be like saying nbc is a radicilization pipe line because they had putin and trump interviews and the interviewers where milque toast little dweebs Also, as far as I can tell, anyone I've known who listes to JRE at least fancies themselves to be above the partisan fray because both sides bad. That's why they love self-styled outsiders like RFK, and yeah, Trump, too. We can argue all day how much of that is true and how much is self delusion, but it doesn't actually matter. It is the most sympathetic large audience you're likely to get outside the mainstream media as long as you don't send in a corporate Dem. Worst case, you changed nobody's mind, and nothing of value was lost. Send Bernie back on and have him prep the next round of folks who are willing to hold their noses and talk about the oligarchic capture of our society. Not in McKinsey-speak or activist jargon but plain fuckin' English. That's the subject that will resonate with JRE listeners, and frankly, until we can undo that, we probably can't have any other good poo poo either. Demographic inevitability for the Dems is as dead as Hillary's blue wall. The Republicans have been chasing black and Hispanic voters in all manner of stupid buffoonish ways, and it's working! Slowly and at the margins, but for Hispanic voters in particular it is becoming electorally significant. And that's before we even talk about the Zoomer men. These are all demographics that the Ds took completely for granted and we called the Rs stupid for reaching out to them. Who's laughing now?

Per PPRuNe, it was an American CRJ from Wichita and a US Army VIP transport. https://www.pprune.org/accidents-close-calls/663888-aa5342-down-dca.html US air travel had a really good run. Our last big crash was in what, 2009? If this turns out to be yet another ATC fuckup (and it seems like it must be on some level)... big yikes. There is seriously hard work to do with ATC staffing, training, recruiting, mental health/stress management... but the powers that be have been beating the DEI drum because one of the controllers in a recent incident was black, so...
