One last movie I watched at home this christmas was the first Pirates of the Caribbean film. Still a great adventure flick. It's been a long time since I watched it so it was a nice reminder. I like the second and third films well enough because they're weird as gently caress, but you could only watch the first movie and be perfectly fine never watching another one.

One thing I liked about the PotC films was how hard the casting went for heavyweights as the villains. Geoffrey Rush, Ian McShane, Javier Bardem, Bill Nighy.. impressive lot.

It really is surprisingly great and I found myself judging myself harshly for questioning George Miller about the quality AND need of this movie. The man is one of the last of our film geniuses. I haven't seen About Dry Grasses, The Brutalist, or Nickel Boys, but I just got out of Nosferatu, and looking at letterboxd right now my favourite film of 2024 is the Conner O'Malley special 'Stand Up Solutions'

saw A Quiet Place: Day One. Apparently no one told the sound designer that this was supposed to be a soulless cashgrab prequel because they sure as hell showed up to work. The mixing was excellent Also Lupita Nyong'o has an incredibly expressive face Decent movie

I was rewatching a very Cannon christmas yesterday and Mike tells a story about Marina Sirtis as a con he was at telling a story about how thankful she was to the fans that she didn't have to get raped in Cannon films movies anymore. that's where I'm at with Monique Gabrielle
