I saw it at one of the earlier midnight screenings when nobody knew what to expect, and I think I'm just afraid of diluting the overpowering impact it had on me at the time. Maybe in a decade or so I'll watch it late at night when nobody else is home.

yeah that's fair. my first viewing was in a theater too and it was AWESOME, you could hear a pin drop, everyone was so uncomfortable. but i also feel like it's a movie designed to be watched on a TV late at night alone with all the lights off.

oh, that part is definitely true. but that's part of what i liked about it. The Tragedy of Macbeth showed that Joel is the one who gives their movies a stately, gorgeous sense of visual grandeur, and Drive Away Dolls showed that Ethan is the one who makes their movies at all fun to watch.

what if the coens knowingly cast alden in that role because he couldn't act?

it's too good a performance to be an accident; he's not even playing a bad actor so much as he's playing a stock b-movie actor who's horribly miscast. besides, that's more of a Verhoeven thing.

the wild thing about The Ladykillers is despite being complete rear end and the Coen Bros’ second-worst movie (I do not get Intolerable Cruelty apologists, absolutely atrocious picture), it has Tom Hanks’ best performance.

Intolerable Cruelty is fine. If it wasn't a Coen movie we'd probably remember it as a decent screwball comedy, but its hurt by the comparison of its pedigree. It's definitely low-tier Coens, though.

if it weren't by the Coens, we wouldn't remember it at all, which would be what it deserves.

it wasn't even a movie they wanted to make, it was a screenplay someone else wrote that they polished up for hire and resorted to pulling out of mothballs when To the White Sea fell through.

In a just society this is exactly right. In ours? Not so sure. If you say how you really feel you might get locked up for a bit, and in the meantime could lose the job or housing that had kept you functional. The reason not to mention it is because our system pushes professionals towards doing something that isn’t always the right call because they might be sued or lose their job over it and that means you have to be very very careful.

i don't deny this has happened, but as others have said, it's absolutely not my experience. and some of the ways i've seen it phrased at the very least border on a kind of fear mongering that i think isn't healthy for anyone.

I think what I find most impressive about Lynch is how he had such a great command of such a variety of tones. Twin Peaks Season 3 contains at least one of the most upsetting things i've ever experienced on film and also some of the funniest comedy of the last several years.

weirdly i had decided, like, yesterday that I wanted to go through all of Twin Peaks again, and also finally watch The Straight Story, the only movie of his I have not yet seen, so I already have both on the way through the library network.
