I watched the first three episodes of that "Dandandan" a few weeks ago, based on the strength of that opening title sequence, and...

- The quality of animation in the actual episodes is MUCH worse than the title sequence. Even my untrained eye noticed it immediately
- The first episode features the threat of sexual assault of a teenage girl, played for tension/laughs. Not cool!!!
- By the third episodes the series is already treading water. 30 minutes without any plot advancement. They try to distract you with a sexy 20-something grandma but it's really not enough
- Admittedly this is a bit more subjective that my previous points, but: all anime is trash (except the anime i like (Perfect Blue))

i guess Time is a dimension. So all movies are 3D by default. Thank you for the answer

I dunno it’s a weird question because if you just look at your local showtimes you’ll probably see 3D showings for at least Mufasa if not Moana 2 and Wicked as well. It’s very much still a thing.

I’m looking into getting a projector to replace my aging tv because that’s the only way to still get a 3d home viewing experience (excluding vr) and I still like to watch Pina and Drive Angry 3D in 3D

Man you're right. I guess i just block out that entire category of movies from my consciousness and cannot perceive them at all

i watched very-bad 2010s film PARANOIA, starring harrison ford, amber heard, gary oldman, and one of the lesser hemsworths. Was hoping for more paranoia

so...
what are some very-good films that do PARANOIA well? Thx

Ok i watched The Conversation... man what a great movie!

But here's what i would've done had i been gene hackman's character: i would've simply allow myself to be bugged, and lived with it, and just watched what i say and do for the rest of my life. Because what he does to that apartment... how are you going to explain that to your landlady? And it would've saved the life of his virgin mary statuette.

Went to see We Live In Time (decent, but not groundbreaking tragi-comic romance), but a bit from the film's BBFC content warnings caught my attention

It's an oddly specific, almost one-of-a-kind warning. So it got me thinking that there might be a little quiz in it, and I put a round together.

Can you identify these 2024 releases from their BBFC content warnings? Maybe spoiler protect suggestions you post so others can play for themselves.

1. Threat and Horror: Monkeys appear in pain and distress as they grow wings, and there are brief scary moments.
2. Injury Detail: Characters mutate in scenes which include a foreign object removed from a person's stomach and a breast growing out of an eye socket.
3. Threat and Horror: People are chased by a monstrous fanged worm. A group of influencers are sucked into their own devices.
4. Drugs: A man prepares cocaine in front of child characters and references a toad's hallucinogenic properties. However, no drug misuse appears on screen.
5. Violence: Vehicles and people are attacked with explosive spears and characters are killed by a giant industrial drill mounted on a lorry; visual detail of these deaths are limited.
6. Theme: In a fantastical scene, a young woman is poisoned by demons, who cut out her beating heart and bury her alive
7. Sex: There is a scene featuring a threesome, but without strong sexual detail. In one scene, adolescent curiosity regarding masturbation is recalled by two young men.

I hope that quite a few of these are fair game even if you haven't seen the film in question, and the most obscure one is in there for the benefit of Open Source Idiom.

man i need to watch more modern movies, these all sound awesome

one flew over the cuckoo's nest is NOT what I expected. I thought it'd be 50% more drama and 50% less comedy. Instead we get a (good) version of a Robin Williams "what if a funnyman went into a serious institution and taught all the squares to loosen up and dance" movie.

I really expected the main nurse character to be far, far crueler, based on what i'd heard. But she's mostly pretty reasonable?? Reminded me of Sing Street of all things, where the authority figures we're meant to hate all seem pretty ok?? Am i losing my edge??

Yeah saying the Nurse isn't too bad is...well I don't get it. If patients piss her off in group she psychologically tortures them, and they are uniquely vulnerable to that. It's like giving titty twisters in a burn ward.

You’re right, and tbf this is a case of my expectations being off. I thought I’d see someone properly sadistic and arbitrary, like the headmistress from Matilda. « The 5th most villainous villain ever » according to the American film institute. I don’t think she’s the 5th most villainous villain ever

Ratched stands for a system that is only about care on the surface, but is really about containment. Her subjects are there because they need help, but they merely get a treatment that keeps them from getting much worse. Unless they threaten the status quo, of course. Then Ratchet goes after them with as much glee as her position allows her.

Yeah and it's a problem with the institution, meanwhile the way the nurse lives on in the popular imagination (as i've been perceiving it at least) seems to hold her solely responsible. Hence why i expected a much crueler and sadistic character

The reason Peter Griffin says "Ghost" here is because in this episode he watches another Patrick Swayze movie, 1989 action flick Road House, and starts using action moves on stuff while yelling "Road House!". So you see, it makes sense why he would say "Ghost".
