My first movie of the year was Laid Back Camp: The Movie. It was nice. Nice little cap to the series, but not really a highlight of the series, if that makes sense

I'm gonna watch more anime

Gripweed

The best anime of recent years were Delicious in Dungeon and Dandadan. Delicious in Dungeon starts off with the basic question of "OK but how would the ecosystem in a D&D style dungeon actually work?" and builds arguably the best original fantasy story of the century on top of that. Dandadan is a classic "boy who believes in UFOs gets possessed by a ghost, girl who believes in ghosts gets abducted by a UFO" love story, bursting with love for cryptids and paranormal phenomenon, with the best animation on TV today.

edit: they both also have fire ops

The opening title to Dandadan is pretty good but it's not a good example for anime not being perverted, a lot of it is about a teen boy's dick and balls and a gilf

The part after he got his dick back when he realizes his balls are still missing is one of the greatest twists I've seen in a long time

But it was just some guy and John Wick kills him? That sucks.

I dreampt another movie. This one was about a group of mentally ill queer people in Japan. It wasn't set in Tokyo, it was a smaller city further north. One of those smaller cities where it seems like all the queer people in it are connected by like at most two degrees of separation from each other. The gimmick was that everybody's mental and emotional problems were manifested physically. The main character was extremely avoidant, she would metaphorically and sometimes literally run away from situations if it even looked like they might become intense, so she was a bunny girl. She had bunny ears and bunny mannerisms and stuff. There was another character who literally didn't take up any space and people were always literally walking through her. She was introduced to the movie when the main character went to a diner and sat down in a booth and then realized she had sat exactly where the other girl was sitting. That part was actually really impressive because they did the effect super well.

The movie was also absolutely laden in Japanese queer culture references and signifiers that flew over my head. Like, I was talking about it online with somebody and I asked about something a waiter said that didn't seem to make sense and they explained that you can see the waiter's phone case has a single pearl in it, which means.... etc. Also it was an adaptation of a longer manga so characters kind of came and went and not all the plot threads were tied together, but it was still an incredible vibes movie.

I watched Horror in the High Desert. Pretty good. It pulls off the fake documtary thing pretty well, the actors all do serviceable jobs. The main character is well developed, he come off as a real person very well.

I will say, the special effects for the monsterman could have been better. Like, a lot better. Really it looks like poo poo. But thats never been a deal breaker for me.

I know there's sequels, I haven't looked into them yet but I really hope that they are all, as the ending of the first one set up, just a series of influencers going out to try to find the monsterman and dying one after the other in an unending sequence. I would find that delightful.

I watched Butterfly Kisses. It was alright. Mainly held back by how incredibly annoying the main character is. You see him in that hat and instantly wish he was already dead. And I think the stinger at the end kinda missed what worked about the movie, focusing on the mystery about the girl and not the obsession with the story.

But beyond, it's a pretty solid found footage fake documentary. I really liked the audio guys, they had a kind of natural enthusiasm that was very fun on screen. And the "blink test" scene was great. There's so many of these "a ghost is gonna get you" movies, especially in found footage, so it was so fun to have a part where one of the characters realized the ghost was basically restrained by his scary nature and couldn't just immediately kill him because that wasn't scary enough, so he had some fun with it.

There's an unconfirmed rumor that the us aren't us, that part of the title is actually cut off. Which is supported by how it's stylized in the official logo seen here at the top left.

But quuuuuux also seems like on obvious derivation off the metasyntactic variables qux and quux. So there may be some meaning there.

It may be one or either of those, or both, or a third thing, or some combination of the three, but quite simply we don't know yet.
