My lottery pull last night was the ‘68 Romeo and Juliet.

I'll be the killjoy and say you should probably just watch the first. There are some great sequences in the following movies, but that series had extremely diminishing returns for me.

The action in all the sequels is universally amazing on a technical level, and every time I thought "things can't get any crazier than this" they absolutely did. The museum of mirrors in 2 left me feeling like i did right after those two one-shot sequences in Children of Men, just in awe of the technical expertise and execution. The top-down sequence in 4 was the peak of the series and probably one of the greatest action sequences ever done. And the sequels bring in more Lance Reddick and Ian McShane chewing the scenery, which is always welcome.

But the lore of the series (like every other series) was best referenced obliquely, when there was just enough of it to push the plot and leave the rest to the imagination. Over-explanation killed the enjoyment of the mystery for me (and repeated jokes like Jimmy the cop didn't help). By the end of 4 I was absolutely exhausted with the world and surprisingly bored.

One of my favorite movies growing up. The Great Escape led me to it. I love TGE but Stalag 17 had a grittiness to it that really sold the story (and William Holden is fantastic).

Next I'm gonna watch The Bikeriders.

Bikeriders was kinda disappointing for me. The script didn't pop like it should have, not sure. Felt like a Scorsese imitation without any of his flair that makes his gangster movies fun. Acting was great though, especially Michael Shannon just cranking it up to 11.

David Lynch + Elmore Leonard would have been the best teamup since the Coens and Cormac McCarthy imo

Agree that Ayer's stuff is almost entirely mediocre. Training Day is really only good because of Denzel Washington, but Washington was so good that Ayer has been coasting on that movie ever since.

Man I thought Fury was terrible. Some cool tank sequences I guess and a good sense of claustrophobia? but the overall plot was just a rehash of Saving Private Ryan, including the last stand and the coward newbie character living while everyone else eats poo poo one by one like in a horror movie. . Plus Brad Pitt was Brad Pitt playing a less interesting version of Aldo from Ingloruous Basterds. I know not everybody can be Speilberg but most modern WWII movies at least have their own things to say. Fury just felt like warmed-up leftovers.

Roger Deakins (like he so often does) elevated Sicario to something really great imo. The story stretches into unbelievable territory at the end, but everything up to that is fantastic. The shootout at the border is just a perfect exercise in suspense.

I thought the sequel would go into the horror of how terrible it would be to designate the cartels as terrorist organizations, basically making all of Mexico and the US border states into 2006 Iraq (a pretty relevant take these days), but the focus on Alejandro was a far weaker story. Sicario 1 worked because it looked at him and Graver and the gray area of the pseudo-war against the cartels through Kate and her partner. Without that lens, they're just Hollywood characters.

When first came to Massachusetts I heard a man say he was going to Arthur Harper's Farmer's Market and it was simply remarkable.

Hollywood overdoes the accent, most people up here only have a trace of it, but it is very real and the pure-strain version is frankly very amazing

Fury Road was my first Mad Max. I tried to watch the old ones after and they had some unique vibes and some fascinating parts, but they were so different from Fury Road (and almost from each other) that I had problems accepting they were all part of the same franchise. Not sure if I'm the weird one out on this or if it's a common experience for folks who caught FR first.

Edit: my first reaction to seeing the whole series was to think of it kinda like I think of Dune, where God Emperor acts as a sort of connector between two sets of stories (dune/messiah/children in one set, and Heretics/Chapterhouse in the other). Except with Mad Max, it's MM/Road Warrior on one side, Fury Road/Furiosa on the other, and Thunderdome as the connection in the middle. Not sure if that's a legitimate read.

Yeah for sure. Not to point out something everyone here knows, but those old practical effects have a kind of horror to them that modern effects don't. Thinking of defib scene in the Thing but also the model of Arnie's face in the Terminator when he's cutting out his eye (or the stop-motion chase after the truck crash at the end of the movie). They don't look real and may even be laughable to modern audiences, but they produce a unique feeling that totally realistic effects just can't do.

I agree kinda. I think that realistic effects have their own feeling because when they're good, they're seamless and don't break immersion. Avatar 2's water effects come to mind, in that they're so real they seem completely natural. But those older practical effects (especially stop-motion horrors like in Clash of the Titans) always had a more-real-than-real feel for me, like that point in a nightmare where things get amplified emotionally even if they aren't realistic. I don't necessarily get that with 90s-2000s CGI or even ultra-real practical effects like e.g. Omaha beach in Saving Private Ryan.

Edit - which isn't to say that Omaha Beach would have been better with stop-motion gore or anything, obviously the verisimilitude of the sequence is the big selling point.

Went on an Elmore Leonard movie kick a few months ago. Loved Out of Sight, but Get Shorty just didn't work for me. Like, every single character in that movie was completely miscast compared to what I imagined in the book. Especially Dennis Farina as Bones.

Oh yeah, huge fan, especially season 2 with Mags and 3 with Quarles (and 4, despite Patton Oswalt). Seemed like the show lost a step when Leonard died, but the last season did a pretty great job sticking the landing.

I love The Birdcage because it is just so good but it also works for me as a way to measure how much I've grown up. I watched it as a mildly homophobic midwestern teenager in the 90s and didn't like it, but I watched it again with my wife maybe five years ago after escaping where I lived and laughed my rear end off through the whole thing. Lane and Hank Azaria are incredible, although I'm kind of surprised the latter didn't get a lot of pushback in the 2010s for his role.

Incidentally, the movie also made Christine Baranski's cameo in Frasier as Dr. Nora so much better. She must have had a blast playing such a vile role so opposite her beliefs.
