Hi, first time posting here (I think?) and I promise not to be offended if you feel I should be feeding her anything up to and including liquid gold. I live in the UK which I guess is relevant to brand names and availability!

Short as poss backstory- my husband, who was a Guide Dog owner died very suddenly on the 2nd Jan. I am going to be keeping his near retirement age Guide Dog. That's not negotiable for me as he was already her second owner (first had a complicated leg break and decided to hand her back). Because of some weird situation where owner had gone into a&e for a wound on her hand she got from a metal garden table and the doctor unilaterally decided she was covering up a dog bite, a lot of investigation and appraisals had to be done of her temperament and behaviour which meant she was going between a foster family and training centres for about 6 months and under her calm, perfect dog exterior proved to be quite traumatised by the time my husband was matched with her. Now she's had this trauma and she's not going to have any more, period.

Short backstory getting long. My actual query is- she is currently having Royal Canin Maxi Light Weight food, which is paid for by GD's. I have always been meh about it- she had 8 (!!!) teeth taken out last year and I can't help suspecting the food might be to blame. It's not a usual thing for a well looked after and regularly checked dog to have happen.

It is also almost £70 for a 12 kg bag that lasts just under six weeks and I am going to be under some financial stress for a while now (but ultimately she will be getting whatever she needs regardless of cost with help from family if neccessary).

Has anyone got any possible recomendations for other weight control type foods?
She puts on weight fast and being more than a kg or so overweight has leads to her having some urine incontinence when getting up from a lying position. She is also utterly food obessed like most labs, but with the added factor that she's been trained purely using food rewards (Guide dog trainer's latest methods). So it has an extra level of importance in her mind as it's proof to her that she's a good girl. I don't think feeding her normal dog food but less of it is a good option, especially as some of it is taken out of her bowl at mealtime to be treats during the day- she would feel permanently starving.

I will stop rambling and wait for answers.

This hand of mine shines and roars! It's bright cry tells me to grasp victory!

It sounds like nonsense and looks ridiculous but I absolutely swear by Gentle Giants now. It’s the brand made by Burt Ward who owns a giant dog rescue now with all his Batman money. I’ve got two corgis who both have had drastic improvements in the 6+ years we switched. One was often having regular digestive issues on royal canine and blue buffalo all of which cleared up soon after. I’ve tried other foods but it’s the only one that doesn’t give him the shits like he had.
