Well, unless you want to spoil one of the never-ending shonen shows like Naruto, 'cause no one gives a poo poo. Welcome to the Toonami thread for 2025 everyone! Toonami was America's premiere action block from '97 until '08. They showed a whole bunch of anime and are most notable for bringing Dragon Ball Z to the US (for better or for worse). Adult Swim brought it back as their April Fool's Day prank in 2012 and after nostalgia-fueled fan outcry, it's back. And at this point it's lasted longer than the original Toonami! ...like there's a big asterisk there kinda since original Toonami was on every weekday instead of the revival's once-a-week schedule but whatever who cares... Currently airing (as of 7/26): 12:00-12:30 - Dragon Ball Daima  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A88HnBPHi90 Goku & co. are back for a show that will make you say "Wait a minute isn't this what GT did?" Hey... shut the gently caress up. When they get miniaturized by a conniving demon, they'll have to go to the Demon Realm to get their bodies back. This is notable for being Akira Toriyama's last work on this franchise (RIP) so you should watch at least for the historical significance. 12:30-1:00 - Dandadan   Turbo nerd Okarun believes in aliens but not ghosts. Cool girl Momo Ayase believes in ghosts but not aliens. Both think the other one's loving stupid for believing what they believe and make a bet that they'll prove the other wrong... and then the plot goes places. I'd say more but on the off-chance that anyone on this subforum hasn't watched the show, I don't want to spoil anything and the plot both moves a blistering pace and almost never goes where you think it's gonna go. In case you don't remember, Bleach kinda ended like Inuyasha ended back in the day, on a half-assed "well the manga's not done but we're not gonna make any more filler, bye bye now!" Bleach was literally the last anime show left on Adult Swim before they revived Toonami in 2012 and therefore was the first show to come with the new revived block so perhaps it's fitting that it's anime continuation/finale is finally coming here too. In case you haven't seen Bleach.... well, this show certainly starts out assuming you already know all the plot, so I won't rehash it. You've only got 16 seasons to get through (some of them are filler though, you can skip them), chop chop! So if you watched the original show, I need you to forget everything past episode 17. That's right we have a Full Metal Alchemist 2003 scenario here people! Only this is not a Brotherhood scenario, this next season is just going to gaslight you by just pretending those last 8 episodes did not happen and we're moving on with normal canon stuff here. Oh, in the sake of fairness I should do a show synopsis: Rin Okumura is just a normal everyday kid with kinda freak strength who lives at a church with his priest dad... until one day he starts seeing demons, and eventually learns that he is quite literally the spawn of Satan. So when presented with the choice from other exorcists of "kill yourself or we kill you", he takes the 3rd option of "become an exorcist himself in order to kick the poo poo out of Satan". Can he overcome genetics/magic? Who knows, but I know he'll pick up a plucky entourage of school chums, that's for sure. 2:00-2:30 - One Piece  Oh hey, One Piece is back. One Piece is about a bunch of pirates searching for... wait a minute, I know a much faster way to explain the plot of One Piece: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSe8D2wfGKI Anyway as of this post/edit (7/26), we're still on the Dressrosa arc. You want to catch up, go to Crunchyroll or somewhere or read Wikipedia. One Piece will never end. I know this because it still hasn't ended, even in Japan. The manga hasn't ended. It even has a goddamn shortened version a la DBZ Kai coming out soon and the show isn't even over yet! It is safe to say that there is a whole generation out there that grew up on One Piece, gave up, maybe even died, and then their kids have picked up One Piece. It's mind blowing. poo poo say what you want about My Hero Academia aping Western superheroes, One Piece is the actual closest thing to Western comics in Japan because it's never gonna end, like Batman. Frankly if Oda dies today I will not be shocked if his skeleton rises up like Brooke to keep drawing. 2:30-3:00 - Lazarus  YOU WERE THE CHOSEN ONE! IT WAS SAID YOU WOULD BE A GOOD WATANABE SHOW, NOT A HUGE MISFIRE! BRING PRESTIGE TO THE TOONAMI BRAND, NOT LEAVE IT IN DARKNESS! ...urm, sorry there, got a little emotional. Let's do this proper  let's see, abridged summary: In the year 2052, Nobel Prize winning neuroscientist Dr. Skinner has developed a miracle painkiller with no apparent drawbacks called Hapna. Due to its low price and high effectiveness, Hapna quickly overtakes the market. Three years later, the world has moved on. But Dr. Skinner returns from being a hermit (well, releases a video) to announce that actually everybody who has taken Hapna will be dying in 1 month. As a response to this threat, a special task force of 5 agents is gathered from across the world to save humanity from Skinner's plan. This group is called Oh but.... well, you can watch it in Japanese now, maybe that'll help the show be better 3:00-3:30 - Naruto  Yes, just as Shippuden finally left the block, Naruto is back. To be clear, it's just Naruto, not Shippuden. Believe it! (remember when Naruto said that all the time? You will...) Technically, Naruto never finished its run on the old version of Toonami or the revived one. So now the race is on to see what comes first: Naruto finishes airing on Toonami, Toonami is canceled, or cable dies entirely? Frankly that race is more compelling to me than the actual show. Ooh, maybe the apocalypse? I'd put money on that... So what else can we expect this year? Ummmm... that's everything. Now that Lazarus is out and Uzumaki crashed and burned, that's all the Toonami originals. Given that their parent company Warner Bros. Discovery is run by notorious cheap gently caress and suspected "guy that just straight up doesn't like cartoons" David Zaslav, I'm honestly very worried about the prospect of any new shows ever again... Stop being a loving bummer, anything else? Toonami really doesn't announce too much ahead of time. What they do do however, is basically never leave a show unfinished, so if there's a show that's aired here, and there's a new season in Japan, you can almost usually bet that it will air here eventually... or at least, you could, before Netflix and Crunchyroll started getting real guarded about what gets out of the streaming ghettos. But hey, you never know, they said Demon Slayer would never return after Mugen Train made a shitload of money, and it eventually did return. Netflix even let Cowboy Bebop out of jail one time for another run on the block! Who knows what magic may happen down the road. Anyway, the current list of former Toonami shows with sequels/more seasons includes but is not limited to:
ALSO ALSO Every Saturday night while the more boring shonen shows are on TV, Arist (and others) are building you a better cartoon(/sentai/tokusatsu/whatever) show. They call it Goonami. They just post on Fri/Sat night when they're gonna stream poo poo on Cytube and you can watch. It involves a few browser plugins but it's real easy to do and you should check it out! MEANWHILE EVERY OTHER DAY OF THE WEEK  Adult Swim is a block on Cartoon Network that's been running since 2001. It's their late-night offering for grown-ups such as ourselves. This high class stuff includes a show where a guy hosts a parody talk show and pukes on himself and a bunch of Fox reruns. Like I mentioned up top, there is a TVIV catch-all thread for non-kid animation if you want to talk about it there, and there's probably TVIV threads for a bunch of their other live-action stuff, though I'm not gonna check each and every show. If you want to talk about it here though, that's okay, just don't get annoyed when it gets buried under pages upon pages of anime chat. What's on right now? The past few years, Adult Swim's been cannabilizing Cartoon Network like a snake slowly swallowing a dead animal. It actually starts at 5 PM now with a block called "Checkered Past" in reference to the original CN logo, and runs... basically everything from the 90s up to the early 00s. It's the millennial/early Gen Z nostalgia block. At 8, things roll over proper to classic AS, which is the Fox shows like Bob's Burgers and American Dad of course. They got back King of the Hill and Futurama so that's neat. Also since AS knows where their bread and butter is, Rick & Morty is on basically every night. And AS always has some new cheap show that looks like it cost about a grand to make hoping it'll be the next Aqua Teen and every now and then they're good. Okay, yeah, but what else? Adult Swim has eschewed any semblance of scheduling like any other TV network and also any semblance of actually canceling TV shows (like, if you look at the list of shows they've aired on Wikipedia, there's a ton that haven't aired in years that still aren't "officially" canceled). What I'm saying is that if you've seen a show on Adult Swim ever, there's a nonzero chance that it could come up with a new season at any given point in time. Or hell, maybe it won't come back here, it'll be on Anyway get ready for 2025!
