Chips are good. They’re crunchy and munchy and there is a chip for everyone. Potato and potato based, corn, puffy ones, kale chips, other vegetables like sweet potato and parsnip and beet, I’ve even had freeze dried fried green beans, broccolis and mushrooms. Pretzels and popcorn and snacky broad beans and chickpeas. Wasabi peas and strange soy based shapes. There is literally a chip for everybody.

I live in New Zealand and we have our set of basic potato chip flavours:
Plain salted
Salt & Vinegar
Sour cream and chives
Chicken
BBQ
Green onion
Cheese & onion

We also have “fancy” flavours like rosemary and oregano, sweet chilli, lime and black pepper, and a bunch of variations on the classics that are fancifed because they’re “aged cheddar and red onion”, or “fried chicken” or “sea salt and cider vinegar”.

There are a few glaring holes in the market though, and some chips I miss from Australia and Canada, like tomato and herb, creamy dill, all dressed. Even loud and obnoxious ketchup chips I kinda miss. And somewhat ashamedly, chicken twisties.

Tell me about your favourite chip. Flavour, texture, dipability, how it goes on a sandwich. I’m currently snacking on thin cut caramelised onion and balsamic vinegar ones. They don’t stand up to dipping very well but they’re tasty and they go good on a sandwich, but you need white bread because they’re delicate, even when layered and smooshed down a bit.

Caramelized onion and balsamic vinegar chips sound amazing, I need to find me some of those. I'm in the US but I'm sure there's some kind of fancy chip company that does them. "Onion and something" tends to be my favorite chip subcategory.

I had plantain chips for the first time about a month ago. I've had plantains but didn't realize you could just get them in chip form from the grocery (again, Midwest US my whole life). They were garlic flavored and they were really good.

British chips are by law required to be pale and underdone. I’ve reported these illegally delicious looking chips to the proper authorities.

My Cub Scout troop went to a chip factory once and it was magical. I'll never forget the awe of seeing giant pots of chips swirling around in oil and then onto conveyor belts and eventually into packaging. This was long before those "How it's made" shows, so this was like the curtain being pulled back on the magical land of Oz! I think I vowed to work in the chip factory that day (I lied).

Ruffles Cheddar and Sour Cream is a classic, great chip. Tbh I won't turn down any Ruffles really, although I'm sure there are some hideous flavors I am unaware of.

When I was a kid I just loving loved corn chips for whatever reason (I think mostly because of the salt) so I would just eat them plain, all the time. Now if I eat them it's usually with salsa or guacamole. So I suppose I'd vote snack based on past experience.

There's a crunchy cheddar jalapeño Cheetos flavor that rules. Just a bit spicy but still has the cheese flavor.

They always have gimmick twisties flavours out and the sweet and sour sauce one they have right now are so good. I'm smashing a pack right now, I've stockpiled like 15 packs because I know they'll stop making them soon.

If I've got them available, I'll add Fritos on top of chili or certain more bean-centric soups. I'm not sure if this is specifically a Midwestern brain worm or if other parts of the country do this.

Is a chip just a crunchy snack that comes in a bag, or does it need to be a certain type of shape? Like the popcorn that comes in bags is definitely not a chip, but I would consider Cheetos a chip.

e: Maybe there's something as well about uniformity of the item? Like Gardetto's and Chex Mix is more of a "snack mix" but sometimes does include chip-shaped items.

I'd consider Cheetos a chip, but it's certainly pushing the definition.

If your gonna make the dip you might as well bake the chips yourself while crushing chopping for your dip. When avocado is back in season and I find some rip ones gonna make some guac and chips for this thread if it's still up.
