Or maybe six? I loved LMP1h, saw it race many times, but four or six prototypes versus the current Hypercar grid is no comparison. And the racing has been far more interesting to watch.

Kemono-san posted:i don't really consider putting Porsche stickers on a Multimatic a factory effort, Having spoken to all the LMDh programs over the last few years I have to say this is badly mischaracterizing the programs. Next time Im at a race Ill put this to Urs Kuratle, Im sure he wont punch me in the face or anything. Also, if youre huffy about that then you ought to be huffy about the fact that Dallara built a whole bunch of the Audi LMP1 cars. Is the Ferrari 499P not a real Ferrari factory effort because Dallara make that car too?

By that logic the whole Toyota program is ORECA too. Manufacturers by and large will contract service providers for design and operations, they're just better at racing.

also this is just ignoring the actual problem i have, which is that the races no longer have any context. like every post-race discussion now isn't about who had the best car, or who had the best strategy - it's complaining about unknowable BOP politics.

Yeah I dont know where youre reading/listening to for post-race stuff but much of what I see is strategy, execution and car setup. Even the interview and information on how Porsche won in LMDh at Qatar last year was interesting to show what margins are there and how teams make use of everything. A full F1 grids worth of top-level prototypes in full flight is still a pretty amazing site, too. BoP-based racing isnt as pure as the prior classes for GTs and LMPs, but its stable and the racing is great.

On the same note unrestricted budgets killed the WEC 2 times in 3 decades. (Though the time in the early 90s was the FIA trying to push prototype manufacturers into F1)

also now im remembering some people asking if they'd invite a SuperGt gt500 car as a garage 56 entry like NASCAR, and having to be told that they are probably not going to add a garage 56 car that would outqualify the prototype field

They put on the Hankooks for the DTM crossover race in 2018 or 2019 and werent streaking away. The Super GT OEMs also have an understanding of how to develop and how far to take things.

They put on the Hankooks for the DTM crossover race in 2018 or 2019 and werent streaking away. I wouldn't say that Super GT OEMs have an understanding of how to develop and how far to take things. There's hard restrictions on horsepower, engine design (must be single turbocharged 2.0L I-4 with 3.5 bar of boost, 650PS max), aero development (cannot develop aero above a "design line" that wraps the fenders of the vehicle), fuel flow and type (100kg/h, ETS Racing Fuels R100), turbocharger (specifically must use the Garrett TR35R 84651915 turbocharger). They also place fuel and ballast restrictions on cars which perform above what JAF wants them to perform. That's a hell of a lot of performance balancing for a supposedly less restricted series. The reason they weren't streaking away from the DTM cars is they were both required to comply with the Class 1 Touring Car restrictions. Notably that rule set caused a collapse of the DTM series, with DTM switching fully to a FIA GT3 spec series after a season or 2 because the manufacturers deemed it not worth the cost to compete.

The expected announcement from McLaren confirming a Hypercar program arrived yesterday: https://www.dailysportscar.com/2025/04/10/mclaren-confirms-hypercar-programme.html https://youtu.be/pCDUVmKwfk8 Pretty thin on details, besides a 2027 WEC start. Im guessing well get more by Le Mans week. Did they get hacked or is this a usual thing for them? Anyway 4wides in Vegas tomorrow. If you have never experienced 4 funny car launches at once, you simply cannot imagine what the engine related carnage and sound is truly like. Def better than Battlebots bullshit rear end 2 hour so called Destruct-a-thon.

If you are going to the drag races because you follow and care about drag racing as an organized competition, 4 wide is kinda a bummer because you end up with one less round of races to watch.
