Following Elon Musk's Nazi salute during Trump's inauguration, a number of large subreddits have banned links to X/Twitter in protest:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/elon-musk-reddit-ban-list-of-subreddits-blocking-x-links/ar-AA1xEG4b

quote:

Sports communities were some of the first to put the ban into place, with a Chicago Bears subreddit and a large F1 subreddit both proposing that no content from X.com be shared on their community pages.

The topic spread to gaming, one of Reddit's largest topics, with the r/PCGaming subreddit adding Musk's site to a "domain blacklist."

"This is something that we've been contemplating for a little while now," moderators told the community.

"X has become increasingly hateful, toxic and less and less moderated. This has, in turn, made us less comfortable with letting our subreddit link it to other people. Not to mention the distasteful things Elon Musk has done recently..."

The r/DND subreddit for tabletop game Dungeons & Dragons made a similar decision, putting the topic to a public vote on whether X should be banned in the community.

r/NAFO, a community supporting Ukraine against the Russian invasion, also debated the topic, with one member writing: "We must ban Twitter/X links and other suspicion platforms like Facebook and TikTok then support alternative platforms like Bluesky."

Other large subreddit communities not mentioned in that article include r/NFL, r/NBA, r/TwoXChromosomes, r/nursing, r/Nintendo, and r/military. Some are banning just links but allowing screenshots, while others are removing all Twitter content entirely.

Honestly the only time I post a shitter link is when I'm phone posting because it embeds easily. That being said I'd support doing away with Twitter links given how much of an rear end in a top hat Musk is.

just to head off any relitigating of the twitter-on-sa discussion, here's a good summary by user Endorph about why sitebanning twitter or removing embeds is not a favorable solution (from the thread in the TECH subforum):

"thread posted:

I'll summarize.

1) Embedded tweets don't give Twitter money, really. So turning embeds off would make this site actually give twitter more money since people would just directly link Twitter, which does give them money.

2) A lot of other sites you can link to embed twitter anyway, like most major news sites.

3) Turning off embeds would break a lot of old threads (more than they already are) and be inconvenient to current ones.

4) Plenty of other sites, including one we do have embeds for, also have ties to far-right ideologies.

5) Turning off embeds without disallowing screenshots or links would not serve any moral purpose, since everyone would still be using twitter, just in a more inconvenient and roundabout way.

6) The argument that turning off embeds would make people use twitter less does not really hold water, as shown by other examples of communities that have disabled embeds.

In summary, there is no financial, moral, or logical reason to turn off embeds and do nothing else, and in some ways turning off embeds would actually be helpful to twitter. and I doubt the administration is willing to police any presence of twitter on the site.

The only argument that really has merit is the idea that allowing embeds of specifically twitter and no other modern social media sites seems to favor it, but that can be solved by letting more sites embed.

Therefore, enable bluesky embeds, and add an option to turn off twitter embeds for people who want it. This feels like it would show less favoritism to twitter and let people who do not want to see twitter at all have an option to further their disengagement with it. Meanwhile, if we turned off embeds but allowed twitter screenshots, there wouldn't really be an option to turn *those* off, thus meaning people'd have no way to turn off seeing twitter on this site. So enabling bluesky embeds and adding an option to turn off twitter embeds feels like the option with the most upside and least downside, that accomplishes the most.

Since site owner isnt' gonna do poo poo, you can remove embeds yourself with uBlock. It does make a lot of threads borderline unreadable though.

I just don't go on twitter and don't contribute to the problem by sharing tweets myself. Hopefully others will too and we can gradually solve this probkem that way. Bluesky has a lot of the same news content nowadays so you can use that if you want. No embeds so far, but just link or screenshot it.

lol at throwing in that "no moral reason." Utterly sanctimonious. Cringe AF.

Bad faith arguments galore in there, I won't even bother.

But the real question is: How bad does it have to get before people put their foot down? In what direction, exactly, do you think Twitter (and it's owner) are trending? What do you think it (and he) will look like this time next year?

Embedding twitter links gives them information about who/where/how people are engaging with their content which they can then use to tailor advertising strategies and/or expand the information profiles. Avoiding giving them this information reduces the quality of the information they sell or use to make decisions, hurting their bottom line, albeit only slightly if we're talking about SA alone.

i'm OBSESSED with quibbling over minutiae!!!!!!!!
i would say dont change the coding to retroactively gently caress any threads/posts (ie, it only impacts posts made past a certain date) but if something is done it needs to be both embeds/links as well as screenshots. otherwise all thats being done is removing a citation to something effectively and forcing people to take extra steps to see if something is legit or not etc.

i actually do not think that censoring information sources is a good or smart idea regardless.

How many legit people are still there exclusively? Few. Most have gone over to Bluesky. We have better websites/sources for 95% of what we're going to post. Take another minute and find a better source.
