My personal theory is that Holly recognised that Lister needed an authority figure to kick against more than he needed a friend, and that if he wasn't arguing with a hologram over which side of the towel rack the socks go on he'd be arguing with an AI over how to steer the ship.
|

Because Rimmer had the scutters hide them outside the ship, op. Also, he replaced at least one with copies of his own disk. Just watch the next few episodes, this all plays out very clearly.

that's not really the biggest unaddressed plot hole in that show why did red dwarf have to continue in (it's implied) a straight line for 3 million years? couldn't it just have like, orbited neptune for all that time or something

Waltzing Along posted:have Holly tell where the hologram disks were and boot up Peterson or someone. Lister DID ask Holly why he chose Rimmer to keep him company, and Holly explained that out of everyone on board Red Dwarf, Rimmer was the person he talked to the most (mainly because Rimmer was his supervisor as a technician.) Anyway if the first part of the first episode of Red Dwarf is set when it was filmed (the mid 80s) then it's highly unlikely that Lister would know how to work a computer, given he's the lowest ranked crew member on the ship.

Also the original Rimmer dies in the radiation leak and is resurrected as a soft light hologram, meaning he doesn't have a physical body so cannot touch anything (although the writers often forgot about that or just ignored it entirely depending on the plot) then in the episode "Legion" Rimmer becomes a hard light hologram so he can touch things (which is important as he has to save the entire crew at the end of Series 6 using a hand-held bazookoid gun.) In series 7 he departs to become Ace Rimmer (and shortly "returns" for that kiss) and we think that's the last of him, but he is resurrected along with the entire crew of Red Dwarf at the end of Series 7 (although we don't see him) and in Series 8 he is a human who once again joins the OG Dwarfers. He gets trapped in a mirror dimension at the end of Series 8 but refuses to go along with Death leaving his fate unknown. By the time of "Back to Earth" he is a hologram again and it was confirmed by the creators that this Rimmer is the same Rimmer who left to become Ace Rimmer in Series 7 so there could possibly be two Rimmers out there in time and space (I stopped watching Red Dwarf at this point so I have no idea if the Dave episodes acknowledge this)
