COWABUNGA DUDES!
🥷🐢😬

https://twitch.tv/thehoond

It runs 24 hours a day and has something like 8,000 to 10,000 music videos in the library at the moment. It’s designed after my memories of growing up watching MTV Europe in the 90s, so the timeslots are dedicated to that era (except the Greatest Hits show pulls from the 80s).

Some shows are my interpretation of content, others are based on actual playlists. The shows have their proper intros, and between each video is an MTV sting with a few MTV commercials at the end of each slot.

It’s fun nostalgia, and one of those dumb projects I actually find myself using a bunch rather than getting bored and moving onto the next thing. Kinda reminds me of the Betamaxmas site someone put up years ago, that thing was always a blast (and in turn I have my own Halloween and Christmas themed channels that play 24/7 movies, tv episodes, specials and commercials).

For those interested in the technicals, setting this up wasn’t super difficult beyond the time sink, I have a thread that talks about the software and I made some tutorial videos to follow if you’re interested in doing something similar https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=4064326

edit: now with schedules and show breakdowns!

Times are based around US East Coast.

All but one show is based on a real thing, the fake show is 'Hits from the Movies' where I just made a playlist of stuff that had movie tie ins - mainly because I miss seeing MVs which incorporated the act with scenes from the movie itself, those were always a bunch of cheesy fun. That block always starts with an MTV Movie Awards promo too for fun.

Show breakdowns:

Orange indicates a European based show, Blue is US originated - pop shows will focus on the associated artists of the region.

Daily Shows (morning)
Music Non Stop/Dreamtime/Awake on the Wild Side/Night Videos - random track from the entire library with no ads or promos
Morning Mix - random pop track
MTVs Greatest Hits - Tracks up to around 1985 for the US, 1987 or os for most European songs, mixed genres

Pop Based
US Top 20 Countdown/European Top 20 - Best selling tracks from each chart from the 80s thru 00s
Hit List UK - UK based pop acts and Brit Pop from the 90s to early 2000s
TRL UK - UK based pop acts from mid 2000s
Dial MTV Europe/Dial MTV - pop acts from their respective region (US = North America, Europe = rest of world) for late 80s thru mid 90s
MTV Select - as above for European acts in the late 90s
MTV Most Wanted - as above for US acts in the mid 90s
Total Request Live - as above for US acts in the late 90s to late 00s

Dance Based
Club MTV - late 80s and early 90s popular dance tracks (contains some show footage)
The Grind - as above for mid 90s (contains some show footage)
Dancefloor Chart Show - as above for late 90s to late 00s (MVs only)
Party Zone - more European based dance tracks
Chill Out Zone - daily show at the end of each night mostly comprising old 90s CG based videos

Rap Based
Yo! MTV Raps - late 80s up to mid 90s hip hop
Yo! - late 90s hip hop
Direct Effect - early 2000s hip hop
Sucker Free - mid to late 2000s hip hop

Rock Based
Alternative Nation - mid 90s popular alternative rock
120 Minutes - 80s thru 2000s less mainstream indie/alternative
Subterranean - successor to 120 Minutes
Superock - late 90s/early 00s mainstream rock
All Things Rock - mid 00s mainstream rock
Headbangers Ball - late 80s to mid 90s hard rock and metal
Headbangers Ball Europe - filling in the gap that HBB US left when it ended
MTVX - based on the defunct channel, late 90s/early 00s nu-mteal and metal
Headbangers Ball MTV2 - Jamey Jasta era more metal/metalcore stuff from the mid 00s

Filler Blocks
MTV Amour - love songs
MTV Jams - hip/hop and RnB
MTV Unplugged - individual cuts from the series

I expect at some point it’ll get pulled, maybe a threshold of amount of viewers or something. I ran my horror stream for nearly a month a year or so ago and was surprised it didn’t hit an auto trigger.

The project is just for me, so any amount of time others can check it out is just a bonus really.

Since it sounds like you've watched a lot of music videos, maybe you can help me find one I've been looking for.

It was a weird, low-budget animated one drawn in the style of Jack Kirby's stuff from the 60's. Back as a kid in the 90's I used to watch a lot of the tv music channel, The Box, which let people call in to request which music videos would be played and it would pop up on there from time to time.

I have a vague recollection of the hero being generic looking with DJ powers, while the villain was a very skinny man-baby who wore a diaper.

As for the animation style, if anyone has ever watched the show Minoriteam, I think it looked very similar.

Not much to go on, but maybe it will ring someone's bell.

Yeah I’m doing my best to fill in as much stuff that had videos but wasn’t necessarily getting a ton of airtime. Luckily shows like 120 Minutes are super well documented with regards to what they played.

Yup! Again it's just the videos with the show intro, but for things like that I'm thinking of adding short clips to the mix too where the MTV idents run, just to add a bit more variety in. I have it scheduled on Mondays at 7pm, Thursdays at 11am and also I have Yo, the followup show for stuff that came out after the original ended.

The good thing about Yo! MTV Raps is that Paramount+ remastered a ton of episodes, so I've got plenty of good quality source material to go through.

The hosed up thing is, I bet there's a profitable niche for this poo poo - like there's no reason MTV with just music couldn't exists.. today. For profit and not be poo poo - maybe not good, but like block programmed and running for every middle aged gently caress that gets the vibe of what it is.

What would be the difference between that and YouTube playlists?

Do you remember scheduled music video release events? Thriller by MJ is by far the best example, that was like a movie premiere. But it happened with other new videos too.

Artists used to take videos seriously. Feels like another art form we've lost (and only briefly had).

I'm still a fan of In The Meantime, great song that.

Two that are just drummed into me as I saw them play so many times at one point are Nada Surf - Popular and The Connells - 74/75. I don't miss the days where it feels like they only had a handful of tracks on constant repeat.

As Szyznyk posted, there actually is an MTV Classic channel on some cable platforms and it's not bad. Lots of bad modern ads from what I remember, but it had a pretty good set of blocks.

Inzombiac posted:

I was going back and forth about whether to add non-music programming to make it more realistic but decided against it. When looking for content I did stumble upon this upload of Singled Out you might dig, I used to like watching it too. Not great quality sadly. https://archive.org/details/mtv-singled-out-marathon-dec.-1996

e: The Grind is starting in about 10 minutes, that's always a fun block because I found a YouTube playlist with a bunch of individual tracks from the show so I start the block with one of those every day.

drat, gently caress cable though :v:

I also appreciate the interstitials, I've forgotten how insane they were, especially considering what network television used to be.

Also, the grim reaper's killed so many radio channels and programs during the last decade that it is somewhat difficult to find curated and themed poo poo among all the algorithms, streamed or otherwise. I feel like every time I find one that I like it gets cancelled or stops because who in their right mind does that poo poo for like minimum wage or engagement or whatever..

I should stop before I go into full old man yelling at the clouds, I don't understand the world anymore.
