Well? I'm thinking hickory but with boards that are light with not too much of the dark spots otherwise it could be too busy. I could go for something dark like walnut but for some reason I feel like for this use I want something light and besides I already have something in walnut. I have a soft "ambrosia" maple one but I'm wanting something wider. Ash is an option but like it's not as hard. What do you all think? Maybe I'll just stick with what I've got. Ash might seem a little plain, but it doesn't warp. If you go to your local specialty lumber place, there's a good chance you could find some slabs from a local tree that was beetle killed or otherwise "died a natural death." It's also a good resilient wood, one of my favorites.

Also I really want it to hurt when stumble into it. Very important.
