Well? I'm thinking hickory but with boards that are light with not too much of the dark spots otherwise it could be too busy. I could go for something dark like walnut but for some reason I feel like for this use I want something light and besides I already have something in walnut. I have a soft "ambrosia" maple one but I'm wanting something wider. Ash is an option but like it's not as hard. What do you all think? Maybe I'll just stick with what I've got.

Now do I want like rubio monocoat or a polyurethane finish? Hmmmm.

Hickory, and use the rubio monocoat; you want the wood to be warm, not like a product from home goods.

I think polyurethane can look fine but yeah there are certainly examples of it looking terrible.

Ash might seem a little plain, but it doesn't warp. If you go to your local specialty lumber place, there's a good chance you could find some slabs from a local tree that was beetle killed or otherwise "died a natural death." It's also a good resilient wood, one of my favorites.

I've seen ash that I like but it isn't finished and from what I can tell is likely to yellow overtime. Also I really want it to hurt when stumble into it. Very important.

Birch is for beer. Well birch beer. Which is like root beer but birch. Well it doesn't taste like root beer at all. At least the one I get. Which probably has no birch in it. Pretty sure as it's clear.

That sounds like more of a floor thing. I'd probably want polished concrete, maybe epoxy/polyurethane or tiles.
