I had my entire downstairs redone a few years ago. I went from Travertine tile to LVP. I like it, it's EXTREMELY durable. You can drop a bowling bowl on it and it'll just shrug it off. It's also water resistant.

The only thing I don't like is some areas, when you step on it, you can hear a hollow "clack" sound, but that's more of an installation issue.

I ripped the carpet out of the downstairs and got the vinyl. It’s the one they advertise as kid proof and pet proof and it is.

Don't care as long is it doesn't look like petrified driftwood, rented a house a couple years ago that had it and could not understand why anyone would want their floor to look like that of an unmaintained garden shed. I have real wood floors now :smug:

It makes so much more sense than wood. I have oak floors and there’s been a bunch of annoying issues without much benefit other than being able to say I have hardwood floors.

Tile also sucks, grout is either for rich people who don’t have to clean their own places or masochists.

It's fine for what it is. Your end result will all depend on picking the right look and type of planks for the right room/surface (floating vs glue down). Prep and proper install are key for a good look and long term durability.

I don't like laminated vinyl plank but I put luxury vinyl plank in my basement a year or two ago and it's working out pretty well.

I probably would have paid someone to install it except there's so much poo poo in my basement including things like an 800 pound squat rack and electronics and stuff that I wouldn't want to sit outside for three days that I just decided to install it myself. Which took forever because my hosed up neck doesn't allow me to work on anything more than an hour or two a day, but it turned out pretty well.

I had to pour self leveling concrete before install. Flatness is a must when installing these things

idk if it's luxury or not (one of the cheapest ones at floor & decor) but I did the same in my basement and it's so much better than the nasty carpet that was there before. I paid a home depot parking lot guy to install it though because I have back issues

Room is still a work in progress though, did the floor right when I moved in to avoid moving stuff later

e: though I would not want this particular stuff in the main living area, for a basement it's "good enough" but really obviously fake

We had the mdf backed stuff in the old house and it sucked absolute poo poo, but in the new house we have one room with the steel/aluminium backed stuffed with a rubber layer between the vinyl and the backing and its absolutely insane how durable it is.

I checked the price difference out of interest and its a fair bit more but having seen both first hand now I'd pay for the better stuff.

The wood print linoleum in our bathrooms is really fake looking but I’m not ready to remodel and tile them yet. Maybe after the kids move out.

IMO it's the next best thing to real wood. My wife would never go for it though... my old condo had it and my floors were so loving easy to clean.

they're getting very convincingly wood-like as of late but in our recent remodel all the (non dogshit) LVP has either a weird plasticky seam or a weird bevel between planks which I guess simulates a wood plank? it was only like $3/sq ft extra to instead go with quality manufactured wood so we did that instead though mainly for the resale value

Seems cool for a piss and slop dungeon. Like if you want to warm up the color scheme a little.

Floor to ceiling subway tile and floor drains is obviously the way to go, if you can afford it.

Pro-tip: if you install them standing on edge instead of horizontally, you get a really unique looking pattern and texture. Depending on the width of the plank you use, you may lose a few inches of ceiling/doorway clearance though, so just take that into account. Good luck!

We put it through our house. Really wanted harder stuff or even real wood, but our base flooring is so uneven that even with a bunch of levelling compound no one could guarantee good results.

unfortunately you lost your job 10 years ago and have enormous foot damage from the resultant homelessness. the flooring provides no cushioning whatsoever and creates substantial noise when walked on. 2 inches of 8/lb density padded carpet ftw.

Reassisted Retrogression
I had really gross vinyl adhesive flooring when I bought my house. I had to stick to a budget so real wood was out of the question. LVP seemed like by far the best option. I had it done the same throughout the house.

Only pics I have of remotely the same angle but I think it's a pretty big upgrade.

Colonel Cancer posted:

Nothing really if it's polished and you have some stuff in the room to absorb the reverb, though it's not going to go well with most decor.

Exactly this. After a couple years there are more noises and a lot of the time it shifts or oozes adhesive so the joints start looking shabby. In an old building that isn't even or square anywhere I feel like wood has more give and the unevenness isn't as noticeable. Probably expensive as hell though so get whatever you can afford and throw a big rug on it.

I put it in the finished part of my basement and basement office after my rear end in a top hat dog tore up the carpet that was there when I bought the house. I put down vapor guard and a thin layer of foam underlayment under the planks and its good for what it is. Throw some rugs down and it looks pretty good. Paid about 2000 dollars everything said and done and it was really easy to do everything myself over the course of about a week. All you need is a tape measure, safety razor, rubber mallet, and youre good. I mean, tile, laminate, or real wood would be nice but I have two dogs and one kid with more on the way so cheap, durable, and easy to DIY is what I need these days.

Ill post in pretty much any thread but god drat what a boring topic this is.

If you’re gonna use that make sure you have a LOT of smoke alarms and fire extinguishers. When it starts going the fumes will loving kill you before you’re halfway out of the house.

Good to know because I have a fireplace down there. I dont use it often and I do have alarms and extinguishers but still.

You’ll really want to make sure it’s not getting too hot then, but I wouldn’t like, panic or anything. Just be aware that it’s got like 10x as many BTUs as a comparable volume of wood.
And if you start smelling chemical odors that means it’s off gassing and that’s probably not great for your brain cells.
Proposed solution: bearskin rug in front of the fireplace. Protects the floor and useful for the romance.
