Thus the deal fell through. Soon after this Honda changed their mind on staying in F1, they are moving towards Aston Martin next year. So now Redbull could buy even less of the Honda engine, and scrambled to make their deal with Ford. Mazeschitz died somewhere around this whole ordael. Ever since there is a pretty obvious power struggle within RBR, it seems slightly cooled down now. Horner wants/wanted ownership of the F1 team while the Austrian side of Redbull (The overarching brand) seemingly didn't want to invest into F1 as much any more. Horner cozied up to the Thai side of Redbull and seems to have them in his camp. The other side is Marko/Verstappens/Mazeschitz Jr. Then Horny Horner did his Stuff and this apparently made Newey leave. So you have 2 drivers: Max who is their clear-cut Number 1, and Perez who brings in a shitload of sponsor money. Horner also seemed quite fond of Perez. In your Junior team you have a washed up Danny Ric, and the Honda guy. Honda who left you out to dry without an engine. So they replace 1 Horner guy (Danny) with their next one in line (Liam). Perez situation becomes unsustainable, so they promoted the new guy over the Honda guy, cause it's a powerplay and you kept a grudge. Marko for all his faults always seemed to rate Yuki so you get 2 birds with that one stone. Then Liam turns out to be a binman and the yuukster gets promoted. also supposedly honda was willing to pay millions to get yuki in the seat. that was passed up the first time, with lawson, but when it was obvious lawson wasn't going to get the job done in the WCC, horner looked at millions of sponsorship dollars as a salve for his wound. allegedly he called honda to ask if the deal was still on and they agreed

Honda paying anything for Yuki to get the seat seems absolutely bizarre. Is he known as a Honda driver in Japan or something because it doesn't seem like that matters at all to the rest of the world. I just don't see how they get any RoI on that.

If there is a chance he becomes the most successful Japanese driver in F1 history and he's openly backed by Honda that would likely be pretty good at influencing sentiment. Also potentially influencing a new generation of Japanese interested in racing.

Well it's going to be a brand new engine for a brand new formula, a teeny tiny ICE engine with a lot of battery. Except now maybe not a lot of battery because teams started freaking out and then MBS tried to suggest V-10s again like less than a year out of release and some teams said no way but they might tweak the original agreed upon power unit. So, it's kind of silly and who knows who is going to get it right, or if we're going to get a new engine formula sooner than normal or what.
