heya folks, returning f1 fan here. watched heaps of f1 growing up because my dad was a big fan, but i lost track of it after leaving home, and by the time i settled in nz was completely checked out. fast forward to like two months ago, when the bug suddenly got me again, and i've spent said last two months mainlining f1 and catching up on what's been happening during most of this 21st century thing.

mortified to discover that ferrari are now the dallas cowboys. :D still gonna cheer for them though. where the hell are lotus? like i'm glad williams and mclaren stuck around, but seriously, lotus are like THE brit f1 team in my head. it looks like they... merged with renault? or something? i can't work out whether alpine counts as a "descendant" of lotus or not.

the biggest mindfuck for me in returning is that JEDDAH is a track. i loving grew up in jeddah (back in the previous century :corsair:) and have absolutely sat on the corniche and watched princes in supercars drive directly at each other at high speeds and crash (because "gently caress you i'm a prince i'm not giving way" - both of them) so the in some ways the idea fits perfectly.

in my day though they'd have made it so any individual day was either men only or women and children only, like they used to do with fairgrounds and themeparks. the fact that, presumably, the next few days on the race course are going to feature men and women on site at the same time feels deliciously elicit in a way that feels almost dreamlike to my 20th century memory.

that's all to say that i'm probably more hyped about the jeddah race than most. it's gonna be a fucker trying to watch this race live on nz time, but fortunately for me this race is happening on easter weekend, so i can watch it in the early hours of monday without loving myself for work. (even just juxtaposing easter weekend with jeddah in a public way feels funny in my head. i remember the winter the matawa came through our school and removed everything with the word "christmas" on it.) (why yes, everything i hear about the trump administration's attitude reminds me very strongly of saudi's religious police.)

anyway, count me amongst the bedraggled tifosi, and i'm thrilled to be back watching this dumbarse motorsport.

Watch me pull my dongle out of this tiny box

Lotus has been gone for a long time. Not sure if they merged with someone or just folded outright.

Alpine is now what used to be Renault.

Audi is joining next season replacing the Stake shady gambling site, Kick for people who got booted from Twitch streaming, and Sauber cars.

Cadillac is joining as an 11th team, so we'll have 21 good drivers and Lance Stroll next season, along with some rule changes that will make the cars smaller and lighter, but probably slower.

Welcome back.

Lotus died, then a Malaysian team calling itself Lotus entered the sport in 2010, then Renault, who was Benetton, changed its name to Lotus so Lotus changed its name to Caterham and then folded in 2014 and Lotus changed its name back to Renault and then changed its name again to Alpine

simple!

I would really prefer if you would be quiet.
For some reason I thought force India had become alpine, I didn't realize those pink cars back in 2019 weren't Alpine but BWT who then became Aston Martin

Tbf I've been following f1 all of 2 years so I'm clueless lol

Jordan > Midland > Spyker > Force India > Racing Point > Aston Martin

due to a technicality with how the Force India to Racing Point buyout worked it wasn't considered a continuation of the team with a new name, instead it's considered a new team that just took the grid spot but nobody really cares about that except the FIA

Although to make it even worse, BAR only bought the entry, the team itself was merged into Minardi, so you split there and go with Zedd's post too.
