Hello everyone. This weekend is St Patrick’s Day Weekend. St Patty’s falls on Monday the 17th of March but I imagine people will be celebrating on Saturday and Sunday as well. Whatchu gonna be up to? I plan to have some Irish Whiskey and a Corned Beef Reuben tomorrow.

Growing up my family, like many others in America, had that brain dysfunction that makes them believe they are 5/4ths Irish and celebrate this by making a meal that an actual Irish person would probably be confounded by: a corned beef, potato, and steamed cabbage slurry of some type. Bonus points for having the token drunk uncle present to ramble about how the Irish were indentured servants so "those people" should really stop complaining. Think I'll make some sort of beef curry dish this year. ![]()

St Patrick's Day when I was in college was some of the most over the top debauchery I've witnessed. There wasn't even a noticeable amount of Irish people around; it was just a day to get more insanely drunk than most. The whole town, not just the students, but everyone would be going insane. One year I had an exam that morning and I was riding my bike to campus at 8 AM. Residential streets; and I see some student stumble drunk into the road right in front of an on-coming car. It braked fast enough and the drunken guy just kinda waved his arm in the air and stumbled on. Saw some dude passed out on a lawn with his bike laying next to him. And again, this is 8 AM. I got back to the apartment a couple hours later and my roommates were already half-sloshed. All the green dye added to the beer was just a massive cliche. One year we got breakfast and it was literally green eggs and ham. We went downtown that evening to the bar district, but we stopped at a true Irish pub that was local to us and was one of our group of friends hangouts. The place can hold about 60 people and there was a line of 200 waiting to get in. Everyone in line was drinking a beer they'd brought with them. We went downtown to the bar district and the police had already blocked traffic around several blocks because the streets were just flooded with drunk people. We walked past an alleyway and there were two people just banging away about 5' from the sidewalk. Good for them I guess. All in all; very fun time, but seeing massive amounts of drunken people everywhere was quite impressive.

I usually throw a little shindig at my house but wasn’t able to host it this year. My friend hosted it last weekend. Had some beers and corned beef and stew and such. Was a good time 10/10.

I went to Ireland last year and they didn't have any corned beef, however I wasn't expecting any. I heard it became an American Irish immigrant thing since it was plentiful in New York. I did a tour around Dublin and saw things like the hotel where Bram Stoker plowed Oscar Wilde's fiance. We didn't learn any of that in high school English class. Never let school get in the way of your education.

Family used to think it was from Ireland but the test said English. I dont drink anymore, it's a weekend of mourning

I didn't party because I'm a nerd.

My dad said he looked at going to Chico (he was an adult in his 30s at the time) and he remembered seeing a shirt in a gift shop near campus that said "Chico State: The best 5 or 6 years of your life" above a passed out student

Corned beef is way better if you bake it (braise? poach?) by putting it in a baking dish with like an inch of water, the seasoning packet and airtight aluminum lid. Low and slow and it actually comes out pretty nice. not all traditions make sense and straight up boiling stinky rear end cabbage and a hunk of meat is nasty as heck

The only corned beef you ever see here in Ireland comes in a can. It's... not great. It's minced and has a weird texture and aftertaste. Think SPAM only made with beef. I've seen pictures of the stuff you get at deli counters in the US. It actually looks quite good.

Apparently in America the Irish Immigrants turned to the kosher butchers and it eventually became what it is in America.

It was a couple of years ago when I was arguing with someone else in a similar thread that bacon, cabbage and potato was the traditional Irish meal. Then I learned from Max Miller that history goes further back than what my mom told me. Here's a couple of videos. Highly recommended. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGf_0_2Ji5I https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8KpFs1CHgw

From my understanding it is a non-toxic vegetable dye that doesn't seem to have long-term problems, but I imagine changing the water color every year has to at least be disorienting to life in the river if nothing else That being said, we were worried about Asian carp running up the Mississippi and infesting lake Michigan but you know what stopped those carp in our preventing them from advancing? The pollution. Our pollution saved us from an invasive species.
