St Patrick's Day when I was in college was some of the most over the top debauchery I've witnessed. There wasn't even a noticeable amount of Irish people around; it was just a day to get more insanely drunk than most. The whole town, not just the students, but everyone would be going insane. One year I had an exam that morning and I was riding my bike to campus at 8 AM. Residential streets; and I see some student stumble drunk into the road right in front of an on-coming car. It braked fast enough and the drunken guy just kinda waved his arm in the air and stumbled on. Saw some dude passed out on a lawn with his bike laying next to him. And again, this is 8 AM. I got back to the apartment a couple hours later and my roommates were already half-sloshed. All the green dye added to the beer was just a massive cliche. One year we got breakfast and it was literally green eggs and ham. We went downtown that evening to the bar district, but we stopped at a true Irish pub that was local to us and was one of our group of friends hangouts. The place can hold about 60 people and there was a line of 200 waiting to get in. Everyone in line was drinking a beer they'd brought with them. We went downtown to the bar district and the police had already blocked traffic around several blocks because the streets were just flooded with drunk people. We walked past an alleyway and there were two people just banging away about 5' from the sidewalk. Good for them I guess. All in all; very fun time, but seeing massive amounts of drunken people everywhere was quite impressive.
