C.S. Lewis's greatest skill in fantasy was coming up with evocative names for poo poo that wouldn't get explained. The Deep Magic. The Emperor Beyond the Sea.

I thought it was weird when Narnia went into a total eclipse and got swarmed by bat-like predators, and that one guy just happened to be able to see in the dark.

Magician's Nephew is the best narnia book (although it shouldn't be the first one anyone reads) because - it's got the most science-fiction feel out of all of them - it's not particularly Jesusy - there's limited scope for Lewis's racism and sexism to reveal itself Magician's Nephew > Dawn Treader > Horse and His Boy > Prince Caspian (can't really remember this one tbh) = The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe > The Silver Chair (has good bits but very uneven) > The Last Battle (super high Jesus levels)

I know I read the whole series at least once, and I'm still sure my entire knowledge of them comes from film and TV. I did not find them very memorable. Maybe if Alsan had been Crom it would have stuck.

I vaguely recall liking the tv miniseries of The Silver Chair with Tom Baker (scarf Dr Who). Mildly considering revisiting it and the other serials but probably they'll be naff and boring.

Did any of you read The Magicians? Not the lovely TV show, but the book it was based on? It looks at first like it's going to be about adult Harry Potter but ends up being about adult Narnia. Pretty decent.
