Seems like there's a little confusion about the history of this little forum so I thought it might be fun to take a trip down memory lane. I would love it if other old-timers chimed in. So far as I know Google THIS! is the poster who has posted in BYOB the longest, although he wasn't posting there when I started so between the two of us we probably cover almost the whole thing I ain't a historian so it's just memories. I might remember some stuff wrong but not intentionally. Anyway to get started with topics, to my mind the eras of BYOB have been like this: 1. rznv era - Lowtax wields the Chillaxe and opens BYOB. This era is the one memorialized in the BYOB reggae. 2. The Pogue Crew era. A small group of funny and antagonistic posters make BYOB their own, eventually leading to Lowtax placing BYOB in the R-worded Forums for Assholes along with YCS and LF and then deleting it entirely. During this time there was no mod per se assigned to BYOB but Ozma and Abe sort of looked after it. 4. Two or so years (?) with no BYOB. 5. BYOB 8.2. - No Mods No Masters. No mods but 2 IKs, Google THIS (though he wasn't called that yet), who iirc actually did the code stuff that made the stylesheet work again, and Arnold of Soissons who got really upset about the Wu-Tang Clan. During this period there was a thread called No Mods No Masters Post Those Tits and Assets, which was a straight up porn thread. 6. The Dogcrash Truther era - Dogcrash Truther was the mod, and since that's me that's the one I probably know the best. This era featured a mix of original BYOB posters, Pogue Crew posters, and new posters. It was kind of rough and tumble. 7. The FluffieDuckie era - A period of peace and prosperity ruled over by a universally beloved and respected monarch. 8. The GaG era - the current era, which someone other than me can probably soak best about but hey, I was there. Kind of a dorky idea for a thread I know but what the heck, as old school yobber Smilin' Tyler once wrote, "cool is not something you should want to be." |

my favourite byob was in 2014 after lowtax opened it and abandoned it before we got mods or ik's when it was really spammy and if people brought it up to the admins they were probated and told that it was lowtax' personal project. it's really cool to me how a glob of funny persistent people formed in that and made friends by posting jokes that the kinds of people who would laugh at that kind of forum would get. the irony and the sincerity blended well and nothing mattered. everyone could join in and you got to meet lots of different people and enjoy things from different angles. i love byob

Gemini refused to give any specifics at all but generally got the basic description of BYOB right. Claude refused to discuss BYOB post-2009 and when explicitly asked, just kept on talking about the original BYOB. |

Woah, I know this came out of something else originally, but, given we are celebrating 25 years of Something Awful and everything, this thread is a seriously good idea, so, thanks cda/dct/bad guy, whatever you wish to go by. I remember those guys, too, by the way, you probably don't remember, or rather recognize, but I've joined you guys when BYOB 8.2 reopened, believe it or not! So yes, those are a lot of familiar names, and brings back a lot of memories.
