I've been searching for a new home this entire time and I haven't really found one. Everything is either dead or barely have any activity left. Younger generations don't seem to grasp or even like forums. Reddit also seems to be stagnant. There's only a handful of active forums left.

I don't see forums making a comeback but I sure do hope so.

I think we've reached peak Discord and people are realize how terrible it is at preserving information, so it wouldn't surprise me to see forums culture make a modest comeback in some circles. I do think the appetite online for slower, more considered posting with a longer "tail" as it were isn't going to be very high in a post infinite-scroll world, but I think there will always be sickos who are into that sort of thing, and I hope they come here!

reddit is basically a forum and is one of the biggest sites on the internet. it just has algorithms and doesn't show things in chronological order.

you should check it out OP!

yeah forums are largely dead, sadly. Discord was the death knell.

I dislike for Reddit, but it's the biggest hub I've found for hobbies I've found outside Discord, so it continues to assert dominance.

I don't see things changing in the current climate.

Yeah, I also believe Discord has hit it's peak too. How low or fast it falls is up to the new CEO and how much of that Activision Blizzard energy he brings over to it. The young gens will clutch to it the same way folks clutched to FB/Reddit.

Fandom/Wikis will be a thing again but I don't think forums will make a strong comeback unless reddit/existing social media topples. You'll get some weirdo games with a strong forum sure but not a mass return.

forums are dead, reddit is dead, discord is dying.

Just extrapolate what's happening:

We went from long-form text (forums) to short text organized by popularity (reddit) to transient chat with less ability to reply (discord). Less depth and interaction over time.

You know how TikTok videos have evolved from being just a regular short video at first into videos that 1) have giant text front and centre only 1-3 words at a time, as well as a second video playing over-top to "keep you interested"? A move towards more passive consumption with gimmicks to push the info into your brain with less effort on your part.

So I'd say the next stop for the "forums" style stuff is just going to be AI avatars that represent you, chatting to other AI avatars. Then when you pick up your phone, your avatar will summarize all the chat it wants you to know about into bullet points.

our local citysub has had the mods push a discord hard, and you only get access to anything besides a basic chatroom that nobody uses if you spend your time chatting in there. so you can't pop in on occasion and ask questions, and if you ask questions in the sub they just say to use the discord

FB Groups still seems to have a weird grip on hobby groups. They killed off most hobby forums but a huge chunk of them didn't transition to discord.

I have a hard time envisioning what the dominant format of information exchange/correspondence on the internet will be in the future, as I'm in my mid-40s. But if Discord is waning as well, do you think it'll lean towards more real time chat room type stuff, or will there be a want or need for more measured exchanges like forums or, to a lesser degree, things like comment sections?

I know that SA is unique in the sense that we have a dead and gay but pretty steadfast user base (obviously not like the late 90s etc but SA is plenty active, IMO) that have stuck it out, and occasionally I'll encounter some user on here who is a young person that regged in the last year (!), but for as much doom and gloom that people regularly post about here about SA going under, I feel like it's been fairly resilient, especially with us sticking to the vbulletin format for decades. I can't think of any other online communities that have done that for as long as we have, except maybe other forums out there that likely have a fraction of our user base.

Depends on the needs of the group.

Someone's art discord will just flitter to tumblr/artsites.
TV shows and movie groups feel like social media and/or reddit.
Game/game info would go back to wikis/reddit and maaaybe a forum.
A hobby like RC cars or something, I feel like would go back to a forum.
