Here we have T&T which is like a Kroger but all Asian ingredients. I'd never seen an entire aisle of Oyster Sauce before. There's a mini-mart near the University that has all Asian produce, baked goods, and live fish. Another store in town is THE place to get all the herbs and odd ingredients you can't find anywhere else. The place smells like a harbour and the staff is talking really loudly while hacking away at fish and pork bones. The produce is amazing but it's not labelled. Just in Styrofoam, shrink wrapped with only the price shown. And ![]() ![]() I swear I could spend all day in there if you let me.

In my town we have a place called Eastern Market, and while smaller, it sounds very similar to what you described. An entire side of one of their aisles is about 95% just various varieties of vinegar and soy sauce. They don't sell ground pork, which is odd. I cook with it somewhat frequently, and the only place in town where I can reliably find ground pork is this one particular Publix (which is at least close by and also where I get my prescriptions filled from their pharmacy). There's also another somewhat small east Asian store, but it's further away and I've only been there once. Eastern Market is much closer to my house. In Chandler, Arizona there was this big place called Lee Lee's. Great place to go. I lived in one of the various suburbs over from it for a very long time (but never in Chandler itself). The subtext on its main sign was "oriental supermarket." I wonder if anyone has ever thrown a fit about that part.

I’ve never found galangal fresh, but I have found it frozen. What I never find is fresh jackfruit. I don’t need a whole jackfruit obviously, but a few times I’ve found it portioned out already and got to make Thai curry with it. It’s really good in a spicy curry. We recently got two Asian markets in town that are modeled after H Mart and it’s loving awesome. Huge, clean, has almost everything, bakery, boba shop, cafe with Chinese bbq.

The aforementioned Eastern Market I mentioned sells fresh galangal, but only in pretty large... hands? Fingers? Do they use the same terminology to refer to it like they do for ginger? I suppose it is in the ginger family... anyway, I bought some once because I needed it for a recipe, but didn't have to use much of it, then the rest went to waste. That's mostly on me for not finding a use for it before it went bad, but I wish I could have just bought a smaller quantity in the first place.
