Last night I had yet another dream where I was in a labyrinthine hotel. I forget what the "premise" of the dream was but I was once again wandering around an ornate, ostentatious luxury hotel. It got me thinking... I dream about hotels a LOT. I don't travel a ton, maybe twice a year for work, so hotels aren't a huge part of my life. But I frequently dream about luxury hotels, lovely motels, mountainside resorts like in the Shining, dorms, you name it. Some are scary, some are boring, some are funny, some are sexy. There's no recurring dream per se, just a recurring type of place. I don't know if the liminality of hotels is just fertile soil for my brain to work out whatever it happens to be working on or what the deal is but it's definitely been a part of my life for the past few decades. Howabout you? Does your dreaming brain have a particular venue it just loves to bum around in?

100%! I am in a Big House in a Big City every single night. Its super weird but happening for decades. I've gotten used to it. The details vary greatly, but always the Big House (hotel, mansion, office building, etc) in a Big City.

I have a lot of dreams where I'm driving a car and my feet can barely touch the pedals. Like I can touch them with my toes and put a little pressure but I can never fully push them all the way down.

Hmmm. Lot of complex freeways where I can't control the car properly, feel like I should know how to get where I'm going but can't. Often transitions to being on foot on streets, trying to find a bus stop but can't, trying to use my phone to call an uber but it never works, walking streets that feel both familiar and strange, trying to get to a town I haven't lived in for almost fifteen years. Fun stuff.

I have trouble recollecting my dreams. I've not noticed a recurring location type but that might be my troubles remembering them more than it doesn't happen. The dreams I can remember do happen in different locations through. I know I've had work dreams, even in different careers.

Rollerblading in the 90s broke my brain. Oh I also have the ‘can’t control the car’ problem and it’s usually that I realize I’ll driving from the back seat somehow lol

When I'm having an anxiety travel dream I am often in a house that has rooms with connecting doors. I can go through an unreasonable amount of doors and not see the same room twice. It's more circular motion than linear. Often I am stressed out because I don't have my ticket or passport or whatever to get home and the people I'm with don't care at all.

I still get "Arrived at an exam you didn't study for," but I have a degree so the moment I sit down, I remember I have it and I just walk out. It makes me laugh when I wake up every time.

Yea a couple. There's one with completely empty beach houses directly on the sand on a weird strip of beach that has water on both sides. If you go into the house they're dark (I never go into the dark parts) except for the stairs which lead up. By the stairs there's two hallways going opposite directions that are also dark, but right next to the stairs is a bathroom that looks exactly like the one from my childhood home in SA, and if I lay down in the tub I can transport myself or change the location of the dream. Where I go is seemingly random but sometimes it pops up in reoccurring spaces like some weird off-brand version of my neighborhood or a country road that has three branching paths that just send you back to the intersection again after a bit. There's one place the tub sent me I hope I never see again where I was in this weird claustrophobic labyrinth that just seemed to be an enormous suburban house but with every room hardly more than a few feet across and really weird pale lighting over everything. All the rooms would just have random poo poo strewn across them and I'd hear random banging through the walks. I had to squeeze myself through passages which would tighten or close up, forcing me to change direction, or suddenly pop me out in a different space than it seemed I would end up. poo poo sucked moderately until some weird long necked chick showed up. I couldn't see her face because it would just morph constantly like dropped acid or some poo poo. She would just slowly hover towards me as I tried to get away from her by squeezing my way into different passages. Whenever she got close enough to me I would feel literal physical pain and the sensation of some incomprehensible alien intelligence. I must have slept in a hosed up position that night. Every now and then I'll have a dream where the geometry feels normal and I'll go into a place and suddenly the same claustrophobic narrowing of passages will happen and I just won't move until I'm able to figure out how to change where the dream is taking place because I'm afraid of seeing that bitch again. poo poo had me shook.

Y'all are gonna laugh (and you should, I would) but trains and train stations. I'm not super interested in trains when I'm awake, so I don't know what's going on there. Also in the last few years I've been having dreams where I'm flying a jet fighter or spaceship in some big battle. I would have loved that poo poo when I was 11. For a long time, I had dreams that involved crossing a half-built bridge. The bridge didn't always look exactly the same, but there was always something missing that made it harder to get across: It was a drawbridge that was stuck at up and I had to keep moving 'til I reached the edge, or there were massive waves that washed out the road and I still had to get across, or there was a railway through that broke apart and I had to figure out how to cross the railings without failing into the water. One time there was a massive zip line that I had to use while riding in a giant basket - past a certain point, there'd be these water spouts that tried to knock us out of the basket & I'd have to dodge them. Dream analysts, make of this what you will.

Two recurring dreams with the same locations: an old-timey department store in a large city, and a thrift store the size of a large warehouse in a very small rural town. For the former, I’m usually a pedestrian walking around this unknown and unnamed city and I duck into this department store, like an old Sears or Montgomery Ward. I end up perusing as much of the store until I wake up, and most of the time I’m in the garden area looking at something like rakes or garden hoses when it happens. Pretty boring, honestly. For the latter, I’m driving around with my dad on a backroad somewhere and we visit this thrift store that goes on and on inside, like a Hollywood background matte painting with a vanishing point, but real. This one is just us looking at various things for however long the dream lasts, but my dad is with me so this dream is better since he’s since passed away. I also have the falling in an elevator dream, and I’ve been experiencing that one since I was a kid. It feels too real and freaks me the gently caress out and awake before I hit the bottom. I keep dreaming that I'm back in NYC and remember oh gently caress, I've had this apartment there for all these years and never checked up on it. Then I go there and it's always the same roommates in the dream but the apartment keeps changing but in a way that sort of makes sense for the real passage of time. Last time I had the dream they had knocked down a wall and combined the next door apartment. It's super awkward seeing the roommates since they forgot I have a key and are freaked out I just came in.

Same on the backseat of car that is driving itself. Also, having killed someone and the pigs are closing in. As for locations, the street I lived on as a kid comes up a bunch. I can’t picture interiors now that i’m thinking about it.

I have a bunch of recurring locations, and if asked, I could draw a map connecting most of them. Dream logic applies but there's definite routes between the individual places and when I'm waking dreaming I can change the location on purpose This usually changes the vibe of the dream and the characters, which can be useful

Not recurring but usually interesting. Last night I was on a cargo ship taken over by pirates. Instead of containers everything was stored in one big room on racks like a warehouse. It all appeared to be YouTuber merch. One of the other civilians on the ship had a special canoe and the pirates let us take it to an island to try to recover a helicopter made out of a pickup truck, but it crashed. We then escaped to what turned out to be Chicago, where we almost got run over by a coast guard patrol boat. They didn't get mad at us about it. After exploring part of Chicago that looked like a New England fishing village I woke up.

I lived in one house until I was 12 and then we tore down that house and built a new house in the same lot I've lived in for 20 years and I still constantly have dreams in my old house it's like burned into my young core memory. Sometimes it's just the setting uncommented on sometimes I have dreams where I am forced to move back in that old house and I hate it and I am so angry why can't I be in the new house.

Surprised it hasn't come up yet but the dream concept of Mallworld has recently blown upon TikTok (though there has been a dedicated subreddit for it for years). I only recently discovered the idea myself but have been dreaming about it for many years. Common locations are the mall, the hotel, the airport, the school, and the toilets which are all interconnected. My Mallworld tends to really focus on the mall hotel and airport which are essentially one place.

I can't think of recurring locations as such but I have had dreams every now and again of being bitten by a snake. I dunno why that'd be a thing my mind would dream up because I'm not particularly afraid of snakes or skittish around them. I had a pet snake when I was younger. They're cool. Spiders I don't care for but I never dream of them. weird

I have snake dreams too but they usually involve me needing to go somewhere but there being snakes everywhere I step. I'm also not really scared of snakes beyond what is sensible.

I'll dream I'm at work, but instead of a two man shop, it's connected to a grimy, greasy factory with hundreds of employees. It will be the same rooms as now, but some wall will be open and lead off into a factory floor that seems endless.

Several times, I find myself at the same beach by the ocean. Instead of a flat shoreline there are lots of lakes and little islands covered in sand extending out for several hundred feet, with lots of people swimming and playing in the water. I'm often looking down on this from a cliff that runs along the side. Maybe I should paint a scene of this some day. I don't know if any place in real life that looks like it. More recently, I've had multiple dreams where I'm in a comically large commercial airplane that's maybe 40 feet wide on the inside. Not sure where that came from but it's always an interesting feeling.

Just a lot of curving, tiered levels, with walkways connecting all over the place. I usually have to traverse a series of one-way escalators, or something. For a couple others, I get this sort of indoor amusement place. Something like a Chuck E Cheese, or maybe a parody of an amusement park, just indoors. Typically one level, very tall ceilings, and all the rooms hallways are very spacious, and really poorly lit. It tends to have a lot of turns, but not many split paths. There's often stages for performances, or stalls selling things or having carnival games or something. I guess it's pretty similar to the mall, except for being a single level, and very dark. And then there's this kinda endless suburban house/backyard thing. I'll just go from room to room in a house, end up at a den with a sliding door to the backyard or something, exit the backyard and go through a gate into another backyard, through another house, through room to room, etc. There' never any front doors, there's never any streets. It's just solid houses and backyards. The reason for me running through these houses varies, but I'm always hoping that the houses are empty, that I don't get caught by the people living there.

Okay hell yeah I get to tell this story When I was a kid I had a recurring nightmare. I would walk out the front door of my house, it was a corner house, and in the dream the house on the other side of the corner was a giant castle. And every time I would walk up to it, pull a comedically oversized key out of my pocket, open the door and go in. And inside was a shopping mall. I'd walk in and wander into some candy shop or whatever, and then a T-Rex would bust through the door and start rampaging around the mall. One time it was Bowser. I would duck and hide in one of the stores, but then all of the stores would start sliding around mall. So I would hide in terror while the T-Rex terrorized the mall, waiting for the store I was hiding in to move back to the entrance so I could escape. Once it was close enough, I would dart out the door and then wake up. One time, after having this dream probably a dozen times, at the end of the dream I pulled the comedically oversized key out of my pocket and chucked it as far away as I could. That was the last time I ever had that dream.
