AN A+ OPSTER (:
This is the thread where you post about caramelizing onions and also how to pronounce caramel

I'm currently caramelizing two big yellow onions that will then be used for making a "freedom" onion dip for chips that will be enjoyed while watching football.

How do you like to caramelize onions and what do you like to use them for? Do you have any tips and tricks? What is your preferred amount of butter and or oil to use when you are caramelizing onions? This is the thread to post all about caramelizing onions in

I like to use a cast iron pan when I am caramelizing onions. The cast iron pan is, in my opinion, the best option of pan to use in this situation

Probably yes but also a good heavy stainless steel pan will give very similar results and you won't have to soak it in the sink for two days after.

Fried onions do be pretty amazing. If i had a fryer and it wasn't a pain in the rear end I'd probably do that over caramelizing too.

Onions are caramelized and mixed into the rest of the dip. Now it has to go into the fridge for 2 hours.

just get the pan very hot and toss in a fl oz or 2 of water, then scrape with a wooden spoon as it boils. then season. you can get the little chainmail washcloth too but honestly not super necessary

i caramelize onions in the cast iron like every week and i’ve never ever ever had to soak it for that or any other thing, it’s one of their big selling points imo

been making a lot of bandoura recently, u get that going in one pan, caramelize onions in the other, bake a super simple pita bread, and all ur friends will think you’re a wizard even tho it’s just like 6 of the most common staple ingredients in the world used p much as simply as possible

Oh no
Try this some time:

Put a stick of butter in a crockpot.
Fill the pot with as many sliced onions as you can.
Close lid, turn on, come back 12-14 hours later.

The pan should be easy as hell to clean, just wipe it all out, but idk I also use like half a stick of butter and a couple glugs of olive oil so it is lubed

If I am going through the effort to caramelize onions, its always a solid 5lbs and use my big cast iron pan. I've tried a few of the 'hacks' like adding baking soda but they all sucked, sometimes you gotta put in the effort for a good result. I like to add them in layers with shredded or sliced thin potatoes and cooked in lots of butter.

that ain't caramel

I read a good recipe blog (rare I know) a year or so ago by someone who had looked up as many 'hacks' to make quick caramelized onions as they could find (add water, add baking soda, oven not stovetop, etc) and then tested them all. They concluded that even the ones that sort-of worked only reduced the cooking time by like 5%.

when I worked at a pizza joint we made large batches of cumions. Sliced super thin in a gigantic slicer machine, mixed with olive oil, then in the pizza over for 45 mins to and hour with a few periodic stirs. turned out pretty well.

but yeah, it’s a lot of work for th home cook
