Walnut is beautiful, but don't have one in your yard unless you like gathering an infinite amount of rotting husks with walnuts inside that will gently caress up your lawn mower for an end table in 20 years.

A double bass actually It was a student instrument that had been written off , and eventually thrown into a skip that a friend rescued for me It unfortunately was due to be thrown out and it has pulled itself apart , as is often the end of these beautiful instruments I'm tossing up attempting a repair, or simply discarding it The fingerboard will be ebony , and I wonder if a woodworker might make a trinket for the donation of the whole thing

I've great concerns for my woods, honestly. When I first arrived here I had a plan to preserve the balsam firs (you can see several in that picture I posted above), but despite my efforts they are dying off, fast. All over, in great numbers. I can't find a specific reason other than "Climate change" which is unsatisfying an answer, but I'm beginning to accept is probably correct. It's sad. I'll see one that looks totally healthy just go total orange and die over a winter, and then just fall apart, fast. It looks like some kind of tree disease or pest, but I can find nothing that supports that.

But there's better and worse ways of doing it. I don't blame your family.

It's really sad to see a logging site right after they are done. It's devastation. They clearly follow some rules (many trees are left, they mark really wet wetlands and avoid these areas), but hard to say if they follow all the rules. Or what the rules are. I know first hand I can still see the scars of logging that was done here like 30 years ago, clear as day. And it's not just the trees - the big tractors they bring in rip up the land and can change water flows. And the woods clearly grow back differently after they cut, which is not their intent (they mostly want white pine, but around here at least white pine is not growing back in the same numbers). I'm guessing that's climate change too - the forest is changing.
