There's no need to rush to be an adult.

Anime goons, Manga goons, generally weird goons looking to be weird, It's time for A-Kon 25.

Main page with links, guest speakers and updates.

Schedules and times for the nerdfest.

A-Kon, the longest running and current 6th largest anime convention in the U.S., takes place the first weekend of June in Dallas, Texas. This year the convention returns to the Hilton Anatole Hotel, off Highway 35E North/South.

The convention has been bringing in larger crowds each year, with 2012 bringing in around 22,000 visitors in total.

I'm hoping to use this thread as a link-up page for goons going to the convention, those interested in the panels and presentations, and just general convention interests that anyone may have.

Guest Speakers

The guest list for this A-Kon is pretty extensive, but a short list:

Michael Sinterniklaas - Dave Venture
Kyle Herbert - Gohan
Amy Howard Wilson - The original Nova, from Star Blazers
J. Michael Tatum - Sky Lord Eneru, Scar
M. Alice LeGrow - Artist of Bizenghast
Krazy Krow - Spinnerette
Ken Steacy - Comic Artist/Publishing legend
Mookie - Because this dead horse still needs beating

Notable events

Nerdcore Comedy is hosting a show on Friday night
The Dork Forest is also hosting a show Friday Night, before the Nerdcore Comedy show.
There's an ongoing contest to get the Guiness World Record for number of video game character costumes in one place. A nerd world record!
Scavenger hunt throughout the convention, with 3-4 person teams.
And a bunch of the usual panels and guest speaking arrangements.

The thread

This thread is about anything for the convention: Photos, merch requests, planning and panelists, whatever the goons going there are feeling they will be doing. Carpooling and chow arrangements are also cool for planning here, since parking looks like it's going to be a pain.

How to Attend an Anime Convention
Edited by Nicole Willson, Geoffrey Starr, Sondra C, MangaPanda and 21 others

You've watched hours of your favorite anime. You've subscribed to manga magazines and invested in buying the volumes. You've ordered posters online of your favorite characters. And now you're ready to attend an anime convention. So how do you make sure that your dream vacation doesn't turn into a nightmare from hell?
Steps
Attend an Anime Convention Step 1.jpg
1Research different anime conventions in your general area. Find out where the nearest cons take place, and when. A good place to research this is animecons.com, which lists almost every anime convention in the world by region, country, and state. Do you want to attend a huge con, or would you rather start out with something smaller? Large cons can have anywhere between 15 and 40 thousand people attending, so make sure you're up to it. At a large convention, there is no way you'll be able to attend every event, so keep this in mind. On the flip side, big cons always have the most famous bands and guest artists. Some cons have a higher cover fee than others, and you may want to take this into consideration. Make sure that your con takes place at a time when you will be able to vacation for 3 - 5 days.
Attend an Anime Convention Step 2.jpg
2Decide how you're going to get there. If it's far away, are you going to fly? If you're planning on a road trip, will you rent a car? Who will drive it? How much will gas cost? Make sure you have more than one person who can drive, and that the car you've chosen is reliable and has enough room in it for the passengers and luggage. Figure out who are you going to take with you, if anyone.
Attend an Anime Convention Step 3.jpg
3Register early. The price of con registration goes up the closer you get to the day of, with usually a difference of $15-$20 between the early price and the at-con price. If you pre-register, all you have to do is pick up your badge the night before or the morning of con, and it saves everyone a lot of stress. At-con registration is expensive, stressful, and usually involves getting up at 5:30 am to avoid standing in a long line of other people who also forgot to pre-register. Usually registration for a con opens up about three months before it occurs, so be ready.
Attend an Anime Convention Step 4.jpg
4Bring enough spending money. Remember to bring spending money too! You can easily spend more than $200 dollars at con on clothing, posters, DVDs, books, and other merchandise. You will be very sad if you get to the con with your $25 and want to buy some souvenirs, but don't have enough money. So come prepared! Books and DVDs are often discounted, so there's incentive to buy them there.
Attend an Anime Convention Step 5.jpg
5Know if you are you going to cosplay. If so, plan in advance. Buy or start making your costume at least two months in advance. That way it's sure to be shipped on time if you're ordering it, or you'll have plenty of time to sew it. Even if you sew every day for hours, it still takes two or three weeks to make even a simple costume, so give yourself enough time.
Take cosplay into consideration when packing, too. Think of how much space your costume and accessories need, and make sure you have that space. Are any of your travel mates doing large, bulky cosplays? Find out!
Bring a sewing kit, duct tape, permanent markers, and/or whatever else you need to make emergency costume repairs. If your costume tears or breaks you'll be very sad if you can't fix it!
If you're cosplaying, practice poses in costume beforehand. That way you'll be ready to strut your stuff when people ask to photograph you - and they will if your cosplay is halfway decent!
Make sure your costume is appropriate for a potentially crowded con. Try to avoid long trailing pieces of clothing that could easily be stepped on or large accessories on your back that could hit people as you turn around. Your costume should allow you to move around easily and see reasonably well. If your costume does limit your vision, recruit a friend to escort you around the con or just try to stay in one place while you're wearing it.
Attend an Anime Convention Step 6.jpg
6Give yourself plenty of time to get there if you live more than a couple hours away. You don't want to get there at midnight the night before, or even worse, 6 am the morning of! Make sure you have time to settle into your hotel room and get a good night's sleep the night before. You'll need your energy!
Attend an Anime Convention Step 7.jpg
7Read the guide to con before you go. At registration, you are given a packet containing con rules, as well as a detailed schedule of events. Take a couple minutes to run through this with a highlighter pen and mark anything that catches your eye. This way you won't miss any of your favorite anime screenings, autograph sessions, or band performances. Don't worry about planning every minute. Just find out what interests you beforehand and make your decisions as you go. Do not try to attend everything that interests you! It isn't possible, and rushing around all day to catch five minutes of everything will just make you feel tired and dissatisfied.
Attend an Anime Convention Step 8.jpg
8Do not be afraid to split up. If you're at con with friends, don't feel pressured to spend every minute with them. Set up a designated time and place to meet, then go off to explore on your own or in pair if you're part of a large group. Con has something for everyone, and no matter how much you and your friends have in common, you won't all want to do the same thing all of the time!
Attend an Anime Convention Step 9.jpg
9Remember to eat, sleep, drink water, shower, and brush your teeth. Don't get so caught up running around that you forget to take care of yourself. Eat lunch, even if it's just grabbing a quick bite at the con's hotel or convention center. Staying till midnight to catch a late night anime showing can be fun, but don't stay into the wee hours every night and wake up groggy and exhausted in the morning, and don't forget to shower and brush your teeth because nobody likes a smelly convention go-er with bad breath.
Attend an Anime Convention Step 10.jpg
10Line up early for big-name events. For band performances, cosplay and AMV contests, and awards ceremonies, make sure you get there early. Lines can grow to epic proportions, and although chatting with fellow attendees in line can be fun, waiting 45 minutes is not.
Attend an Anime Convention Step 11.jpg
11Don't spend the entire time at con doing the same thing. Although you may be captivated by the RPG room, ready to fork over all of your cash in the dealer's room, or just stuck on those old AMVs in the 24-hour AMV theater, if you only do that, you'll regret it later. Get out and try things that you don't know anything about! You may find some new anime, manga, or friends in the process!
Attend an Anime Convention Step 12.jpg
12Learn that socializing at con can be a tricky business. Friendships are made and broken, and love sometimes found. Don't get too attached to someone you don't know. Although you may be both avid fans of Death Note - maybe you're even both cosplaying Light! - that doesn't mean you should exchange emails and be best friends forever. Get to know somebody before you give out personal information, if at all.
Attend an Anime Convention Step 13.jpg
13Make sure you give yourself enough time to leave and get home. You may be tempted to stay until late into the night on the last day of con, but if it's a Sunday and you have school or work tomorrow, you may want to reconsider. By the last day, the important events are usually over, so don't feel bad about skipping out on the last half-day if you have to get home.
Attend an Anime Convention Step 14.jpg
14Remember, conventions are supposed to be a fun experience, so try not to get overwhelmed or stressed out by the number of people and events and the limited amount of time.

Video

This video follows Adam and Joe, two guys who are attending an anime cosplay convention for the first time.
Tips
If you're carpooling with friends, make sure you get up even earlier than any of them, you wouldn't want to be late! Also if you're cosplaying and your costume has a wig, bring a brush and back up gel and wig cap, be careful to keep it tangle-free at all times, you wouldn't want to attend a con with a messy wig!
Bring an emergency kit with you, including things such as: snacks, bottled water, hot glue/glue guns, super-glue, a small sewing kit, extra paint if applicable, and anything else pertaining to your costume you may wish you had brought.
If you are taking a picture with a cosplayer or having your picture taken with a fan of your costume, try to move out of the way as much as possible so that people can easily pass by you and check out the booths without interrupting your photo.
Be patient and polite when asking to take someone’s picture. Ask first and then wait your turn.
Check out the workshops. Some of them are very hands-on, "how to do it". Be sure to read ahead and note whether you should bring your own supplies. For artist workshops, you usually supply your own drawing materials and paper. Also note any workshop fees as these usually cover supplies which are provided.
Cell phones are a must at larger cons, and even some smaller ones. There's nothing more frustrating than having to spend time tracking down a friend instead of attending events or having fun. If you don't have a cell phone already, consider picking up a cheap, prepaid phone before the con. Make sure you have phone numbers for everyone in your group and people you plan to meet at the con.
Bring a bottle of water, especially if it's summer and especially if you're wearing a costume that is heavy or thick.
Find out where the bathrooms are on each floor. You will need to use them later.
Don't just get into a long line assuming that it's the place to be if you want to be "with it". Find out what the line is for and if it's something that you are truly interested in. That being said, don't assume that an event or panel with no line or only few attendees is not worth going to. Not all guests are the "hot item" or "flavor of the moment". They might appeal more to the mature, cerebral crowd.
Warnings
Whether you are cosplaying yourself or interacting with cosplayers, keep your behavior polite. The fact that your character is obnoxious or challenges everyone he sees to a fight does not give you the right to annoy or harass other con attendees. Similarly, your personal feelings about a character should not be acted out on someone cosplaying as that character. Some cosplayers like to behave exactly like the characters they dress as, but others merely enjoy dressing up. Different individuals may or may not be OK with you hugging them or showing your affection in other ways. It is never alright to physically or verbally harass a person who is cosplaying as a character you hate. Remember that this is a real person, not the fictional character walking around.
Don't lose your con guide and map. They tell you when things are and where you are!
Pack band-aids and emergency medicine for colds, headaches, etc., so you'll be prepared if anyone gets sick or hurt.
Make sure to get tickets if you want to attend a tickets-only event, such as some costume balls.
Don't bring a prop that is too clunky and large to hold safely. There are alternatives for wood and metal. You can try cardboard, styrofoam, and even plastic to make an awesome, yet lighter version of your huge prop that will complete or complement your outfit—without getting kicked out of the con or killing someone.
Attending con with 5 buddies can be great, but make sure you're all on the same page. You don't want to discover that one of your friends brought six suitcases, or that the other one snores and kicks when you share a bed. DO NOT bring more people than seat in your car or beds in your hotel room. Before you make any reservations, make sure that the other travelers are serious about attending, and willing to pay their way. Make sure everyone contributes evenly. Costs for gas, hotel, and a rental car (if necessary) should be split equally. Talk to everyone beforehand about costs, and make sure you all know how much money to bring.
Avoid being long winded when asking a panel guest a question. Try to keep it short and simple and your question clear. Avoid going off on tangents to show off your esoteric fanboy/fangirl knowledge. Panel guests are happy to answer questions but don't put them in the precarious position of having to ask you "...So what's your question?" On a related note, if you ask a voice actor "Who would win in a fight between the character he played and another character", do you actually expect him not to name his own character, no matter who the other character was?
For many of the actors, you'll probably know more about the mythology of the show than they do, unless they were writers on the show. They may not necessarily be familiar with the details of the expanded universe of franchises such as Evangelion, DragonballZ or Tenchi Muyo beyond their immediate involvement in the series. Some of them have done thousands of roles for different companies. Keep in mind that many of them who have been in the business for decades may be a little fuzzy on roles they played 10 or 20 or more years ago, even if the show has a cult following. So don't be too surprised or disappointed if your favorite voice actor doesn't remember a voice role they did for a show back in, oh say, 1979. They may not actually remember it.

I don't say w00t in real life
Parking at the Anatole sucks, there's only one free lot and it usually fills up pretty drat quickly.

I've been waffling over whether or not I want to go this year, but recently I've become more and more disinterested in large overcrowded cons. Plus the fact that I'd be going alone kinda sucks too.

This is going to be my second one, and my first really 'large' one. I've been to Kami-Con in Birmingham, and I enjoyed that one, so hopefully I have some of that same experience.

But, yeah, there's gonna have to be some scheduling going on for this to work out, because there is a literal crapton of stuff to go through.

Also, need a carpool?

Yeah, and he's got two panels so he can shill both Dominic Deegan and Starpower. Glad I'm not the only one who hates this.

Sadly, Anime Hell got cancelled because someone didn't turn in the application in time.

Also, on the other side of the freeway and there's indication that you get to pay for that privilege without getting a shuttle to the hotel (or back again). I'm considering going to the Park & Ride over in Market Center, but don't know what DART considers "long-term parking".

Edit:

Also, I need to shill this, but there's going to be an A-Kon after-party Sunday at the Lizard Lounge in Deep Ellum. If the Anatole is too expensive to get drunk at, and it is, at least the Lounge is going to be there.

Sounds like it might be fun.

Also, for parking, I am honestly thinking about dropping the extra :10bux: for valet, because gently caress everything about crossing that highway. But that's dependent if I can get a parking spot across the street on Valdina.

Either way, yeah, it's gonna be a pain.

Good luck with that. Terraciano gives very little openings in his Memorable Heroes & Villains panel. The whole thing is pretty much canned frtom a script he's memorized for nearly ten years at this point, one you can watch multiple times on Youtube.

The only advantage I can think of is that the Heroes panel is being held at a later time, which will likely cut down on his audience.

I still can't believe he's doing a memorable heroes and villains panel. The only person I remember from DD is the main character and his love interest, and all the villains are simply plain sorts of 'I hate you, I must kill you' or 'rargh argh destroy/rule everything' characters. They're as shallow as a puddle.

Honestly, I remember more about the stupid cat than I do about the whole last villain thing.

Yeah, true. He's also doing a 'SPAAAACE' panel, so I might go to that one because I like sci-fi and I want to see how badly he is screwing it up.

Also, I have a photographer friend who might be showing up for the world record attempt. I hope to get some good shots for practice, since my job usually keeps me doing news stuff and I don't get a lot of chances to do the experimental, artsy stuff.

Journal from ground zero: 1345 Friday.

I was the guy in the pre-reg line with the big camera, geeking out at the various cosplays and the signatures on the line tape. Also, the tape itself was like some sort of weird nerd graffiti, with tumblr links, hookup phone numbers and references everywhere. It was pretty fun, despite a 100 minute wait just to make it to the table.

Got a great shot of some cosplayers out in the main lobvy, spent 20 bucks on lunch, got some free pocky and headed to the panels. Had to make a stop by the anime military association for a story. Yes, it is a real thing.

In a cosplay class right now, hoping to hit merch later. Ill post a photo dump at the end of the day. Still no stairs in houses spotted.

I'm pretty much about to give up on Friday and just go tomorrow after figuring out a better way to bus it there. Found out the hard way that the Market Center Park & Ride wasn't going to be a good answer when the DMC chained up the skyway.

Friday battle damage report:

Got to sit in on the M. Alice Legrow panel about what editors want, and it ended up being less about editors and more about jackassess who find themselves unable to work because they can't get over themselves. Got a signature, too, which was awesome.

Made 'Bluugh Whugh hugh' noises at Mookie at his bench. He did not seem to care for it much.

While I was in the Merch area I got a few more signatures, including Krazy Krow of Spinnerette and Brian Foulke of Flipside. Got a miniature webby plush out of it. Also got the 'Two Cats' webcomic team to draw me a sketch, which was even more awesome since it was free.

Saw a lot of crazy cosplays, though I only confirmed one goon (Legrow) and spotted two Kiryuin Satsuki, though none in Junketsu form. Got to practice with some lighting, slow shutter photography, and photo editing as well.

Full photo set here.

See you tomorrow~!

K, finally made it here. Had to DART into Market Center. I'm likely going to spend the money I set aside for registration on getting drunk in the hotel bar (for how long that'll last).

Welp, that looks like that was it for this year. Great stuff, though. I won 20 bucks from LittleKuriboh, got counted in a record attempt, and got a llama drawing. I spent too much, regretted too little and did things that should never be spoken of.

Some advice for myself: next year, make the thread at least a month out for better cooperation, and work on my posts.

See you all next year, i guess. I dunno.

I'm really hoping the parking issues and the whole sealing off Artist Alley get fixed or something. That was more than annoying.

Anyway, JABC, I'd really suggest starting a thread for AnimeFest coming in August 15-18. It's being held at the Sheraton Downtown, which is where A-Kon was held for almost ten years, and they seemed to really have it together, even better than A-Kon. Also, since the hotel doesn't control everything, parking is $5/day, there's plenty of food choices with Plaza of Americas and Deep Ellum within walking distance, and the site is easily accessible by DART since Arts District stop is right next to the hotel.

Im actually in the Austin/killeen area, and they are having Geekfest in August, which we are going to. Though for Dallas Goons, AnimeFest would be a good one. If you think it`ll get traction, then post it up in here or in goonmeets.

I may do this again for another convention, but let me sleep on the idea. Just got done driving, so i need to get back and post up links for Saturday and Sunday.

From personal experience, it really does seem like the earlier you make a post about a convention, and the more effort you put into it, the more Goons actually seem interested in attending (more likely, of course, they are just not bothering to respond to low-effort posts [yours was a fine post but yeah the timing was rough]).

Oh and I was there and suddenly thought "wait, I bet there was a thread" only after the fact. I do not live in Dallas nor do I imagine I will ever be here again and I have not actually watched anime intentionally since the 1990s, all of which were all the more reasons to attend!

My highlight was getting a picture with an enormous teddy bear that I am told was from """BLEACH"""

Yeah, it was kind of rushed. Well, we have some conventions coming up in August, I think one in Killeen and one in Austin, so I may post up about those.

Also, just to check, would the thread be opposed to some sort of convention megathread? Where we could post up pics for those who couldn't make it, talk about panels and just be nerds in general?

If there is interest, I think I know a couple of websites with convention schedules and stuff. I could post up some soon-time meets, get interest going, make it a proper megathread.

I hope to attend again, but I most likely will be going to whatever local thing I can get to, honestly. And, hey, there's nothing wrong with that.

Did you go as anything, or did you just sit at the lounge, get drunk, and wonder what all the furries were doing there?

My highlight was winning one of the LittleKuriboh voice duels as Meatwad. I got 20 bucks from Marik. It was awesome.

I also had my wildest dreams come true!

I imagine everyone could get behind a convention megathread. Or at least I know we got behind one in Traditional Games ... though admittedly it fell into the archives during a slow part of the year, sadly.

I was in the area for training and the nerdiest thing I had with me was a Wasteland 2 t-shirt, so I was apparently dressed as "Quarex stereotype." I did see several of the people you have pictures of on Sunday in very similar locations to where you saw them, so either they did not move or we nearly encountered each other (each equally likely, really). The two dudes I came with were both more into anime than I am, so I spent most of my time just wandering the exhibitor areas to look for stuff to buy. I mostly bought my requisite Japanese chocolates and, shamefully, a Che Guevara parody shirt. But somehow Pikachu's face just caught me so off-guard ... :(

Also the last woman in the Saturday photos is unnaturally gorgeous. But as far as I can tell she is cosplaying as "dirty mechanic."
