Currently ranked #13 in the world, Switzerland's national team (Die Schweizer Fussballnationalmannschaft / Équipe de Suisse de football / Nazionale di calcio della Svizzera / Squadra naziunala da ballape da la Svizra) is widely recognised as one of the best at gaming FIFA's ranking system. Switzerland qualified for their first ever European Championships in 1996, won their first match in an EC in 2006, reached the Round of 16 in 2016, but has HAD never won a knockout match in the Euros UNTIL NOW.

The team:

Let's be honest, Switzerland need the Powercube if they're going to have a hope of getting out of their group. Shaq hasn't played a lot the last couple of seasons which means he'll be fresh, right? He scored the goal of the tournament in 2016, this beauty leveled the score against Poland and took the game to extra time:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qe23AinuP8

Captain Xhaka is a more consistent player for Switzerland than he is for Arsenal, he and Freuler will probably sit behind Shaq in the midfield in a 3-4-1-2. Schär, Akanji and Elvedi are probably the best choices at the back and FIFA Ultimate Team favourite Mbabu (97 PAC!!!) will go up and down the right while Rodríguez covers the left. Up front, Seferovic will try and play in Embolo and Shaq on the counter. He's neither a great goalscorer nor a scorer of great goals but his hold up play makes him a nailed-on starter for better or worse.

The coach:

Vladimir Petković has been the national team's trainer since 2014 and had his contract extended in 2020 to lead the team through the 2022 World Cup. His pragmatic style took the team to the knockout stages of the 2016 Euros and the 2018 World Cup.

The group:
Turkey got knocked out by Switzerland in the 2006 World Cup playoff qualifier and it all kicked off after the second match:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdiBvMTCs7c

That was a long time ago and I'm sure nobody remembers it anyway and they would certainly never use it to stir up nationalist or anti-Muslim sentiment before the final match in Group A.

Italy is obviously a much more successful footballing nation but the Swiss haven't done as badly as you might think against them, they're 1-2-1 in World Cup and European Championship qualifying matches in the last 30 years. There are more competitive matches to come in autumn as they're in the same qualifying group again.

Wales. The Swiss are 5-0-2 all time against the Welsh :getin:

Great thread, op. I'm going out on a limb and predict that we'll do well (by Swiss standards), don't know why, just have a good feeling about these Euros, feel free to quote this when we get clowned on.

People seem to be playing up our underdog chances. They're right that we're utterly useless when we're considered favouites in any way. Yeah, it took Argentina until the 118th minute to knock us out of the last World Cup. Yeah, we managed to beat Spain in the groups in South Africa by playing super defensive and bundling the ball into the goal. But our tactics and players are well known at this point and we lasted all of 20 minutes against Italy. I hope we don't embarass ourselves but I get the feeling that tonight could be the night that we get the hiding we've dodged the last few times we've been on the big stage.

The local press still bring up constantly the time when Switzerland beat Spain in the group stage of 2010. They'll be talking about tonight until the year 3000, but fair play, they nailed it

So :mcrappe: is going to be the biggest Swiss meme of all time...

(first vaccine/second vaccine)

and it couldn't have happened to a bigger fan of the national team.

One of our red tops found him and interviewed him this morning. His name's Luca and he's seen the Nati play about 50 times in total, saw every EC qualifier, and was in Baku for the matches against Wales and Turkey (it was too logistically challenging to go Baku-Rome-Baku in 4 days, he said--they're still requiring negative PCR tests to enter the country). He playes football in the fifth Jurassian division and is a football writer as well. Here's an article from last year which recounts his decade following the Nati and listing his 10 favourite matches: http://www.carton-rouge.ch/2020/02/14/une-decennie-de-nati/ Poland v Switzerland (featuring the Shaqiri bicycle kick in the OP) was his number one:

quote:

A knockout game is not like any other. He stands above the scrum. Because it has its own unique story. No calculation, no management. Above all, there are extra times and the final point of footballing theatricality: shots on goals. When all these ingredients come together in the same match, which is already rare, there is the final point: the Goal. I am obviously not talking about the goal according to his definition of Larousse which states: “In almost all team sports where a ball is used, a place where one seeks to bring the ball in; point scored when the ball reaches that location. "

I'm talking about the epitome of football, orgasm, football nirvana. The Goal of a lifetime, the goal of the century, the eternal goal. And this Shaqiri goal, this upturned chisel worthy of the best episodes of Olive and Tom, is my definition. It is these goals which make you embrace your neighbors in the bleachers, even if unknown, which make you find yourself three rows from your initial place, without really knowing why… This goal is therefore the main justification for this 1st place. Without him, there is no doubt that Switzerland vs Poland would navigate the soft underbelly of this ranking, without any real flavor, except to bathe in the bitterness of a cruel defeat on penalties.

Feels weird to be disappointed with our best tournament result ever but gently caress we were almost there. Weird that two CBs were taking the 2nd and 3rd pens, seems like Petkovic should have said "nah" after they'd already showed their special moves against France. Hard luck that Vargas took his after those two cos he sure seemed to take it badly after the match.
