Where do I find the product key? I downloaded the ISO right from Microsoft's website, so I know it is a genuine copy. Edit: Nevermind, I'm dumb. Microsoft's website is where I get the key. TTBF fucked around with this message at 00:01 on Jul 8, 2009 |

that one guy posted:I'm not sure where my CD or anything is for my copy of XP. I did find a program that lets you look at the registration keys for your installed MS products, however. When I upgrade from XP to 7, all I'll really need is the registration key - so this program should be sufficient, right? It's too early to tell for sure, but Windows Vista required that the OS being upgraded was installed, and earlier upgrade copies of Windows required the media but no key. So it could be different, but since they've never done it historically the odds are against you.

What I'm getting from all of this is that if you have the RC installed currently, you won't just be able to turn that into a legit copy? You'll have to go through some load of bullshit to install vista, then install w7 over that?

You'll have to wipe it and install Vista if and only if you intend to buy the Upgrade copy instead of a full copy.

Turning off Error Reporting is completely retarded in an unfinished OS and will never run and use up more than a few k in resources unless a program crashes.

The upgrade is currently 50+% off, at $50 for Home Premium upgrade and $100 for Pro upgrade. These will be ~$115 and $200 respectively for full price of the upgrade when the pre-order sale ends. The full versions will be $200 and $300 for Home Premium and Pro respectively.

Quick question about what's the best place to buy the upgrade from. I'm currently considering between Amazon, Newegg, and Microsoft itself. I'm seeing that Amazon and Newegg are offering the physical disks. Is Microsoft only doing downloads? Also, does MS charge tax if you buy from them? Does anyone have a recommendation on which place would be the best to purchase from? Thanks.

RC1 x64 has been buggy as hell since I installed it. I waited until the last day to install RC1 as Beta was expiring. The Beta was running perfectly. Now my mute button lights up at all times unless a flash video is on screen and will not turn off otherwise. Sounds still play. Every few minutes, the mute button will turn off and an error ding will sound through the speakers. Also, flash is straight-up wacky now: the only browser that lets me interact with flash related stuff outside of simple mouseclicks is IE8. Not only that, flash tends to lock up the browser for 2-3 seconds like Java loves to do on low-end machines. What the hell? Why is RC1 somehow more buggy than the beta?

Re: fishmech - I have not, as I'm not too keen on ing an operating system, even one that's pre-release. Doubly so because several 7 prerelease torrents out there had botnet/trojan infections.

I have a question that might have been answered from back when Vista first came out, but since I skipped that and went to win 7 from XP.. I noticed that aero forces vsync to on for the accelerated desktop stuff. This however seems to extend to games played in windowed, even though I have vsync set to 'force off' in the nvidia control panel. The only way Ive found to disable the desktop vsync is to uncheck, 'use desktop composition' but that also disables glass and maybe some other aero peformance enhancements I'm unaware of. My question is can you disable the aero vsync, but keep glass and all the fancy effects? It's not a big deal to uncheck that setting in performance options, but I'd rather have to cut that step out if it can just be disabled another way.

On a more paranoid note, it could trigger some kind of fraud investigation on whoever I'm getting it sent to.

I apologize if this is the wrong forum. This usually happens coming out of full screen from media center, but sometimes after a reboot. I can turn off my tv (Sony Bravia - 52" LCD - KDL-52W4100) and turn it back on then the problem is fixed. Sometimes I can go full screen and back out again and that will fix it.
