Liverpool made big news about an official statement for today. It must have been worth putting everyone on edge on a Friday night...

http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news/latest-news/liverpool-fc-statement-2

quote:

The Liverpool FC Board has reviewed a number of proposed bids for the club at a meeting held today.

The Board will continue to act in the best interests of Liverpool Football Club and its supporters, doing all that it can to ensure that the Club is ultimately sold to a buyer who has the resources and real commitment to give it a long-term, stable and secure funding position for its plans.

The sale process is continuing. However, its timing and outcome remain uncertain. In the meantime, we will not comment on rumour and speculation.

Wait a minute. It totally wasn't.

I think if you've been following this thing too closely and eating up all the media bullshit like some of the crazies over at RAWK have then its definitely disappointing.

In a broader sense it's a good announcement because it means there have been some bids and the process is moving forward.

Fingers crossed we hear some more over the coming weeks and we can cut the lovely owners loose sometime soon.

Liverpool will examine takeover bids 'extremely carefully'
Liverpool will spend the coming days conducting forensic investigations into the financing of the handful of "formal bids" submitted by contenders to buy the club last Thursday, managing director Christian Purslow has revealed.

By Rory Smith
Published: 7:30AM BST 16 Aug 2010

The club confirmed on Friday night that several formal offers to complete a takeover at Anfield and bring an end to the three-year tenure of owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett have been received by the board, led by chairman Martin Broughton.

Though those offers do not include a formal "proof of funds", initial background checks on all candidates have been completed by both the club and Barclays Capital, the bank appointed to find a buyer, and results on all those parties to have tabled bids are thought to be positive.

"We have a number of bids for the club and the board is going to take its time to examine those extremely carefully," Purslow said. "Our number one priority is to make sure we know what we would be getting into with any new owner. We take that deadly seriously.

"To know who they are, where the money is coming from, what their plans are and to establish that there is a real commitment for a very long-term stable and secure financial position for the club. Second to that priority – and it's a very close second – is to sell the club as soon as possible."

Purslow insisted there is no leading contender to complete a buy-out and moved to dampen expectations that a deal could be arranged by the close of the transfer window. "It will not take a lifetime but I would not expect it to happen tomorrow," he said.

The fact that a number of bids have been received, though, and have satisfied initial checks, suggests that the Hicks and Gillett regime is reaching its conclusion.

The Americans, who were not present at the board meeting held in London to assess the offers submitted, are believed to have attempted to refinance the £237 million of bank debt held with the Royal Bank of Scotland with a number of other banks as recently as June, though they were blocked by a legal challenge from their own board.

Hicks and Gillett retain a 100 per cent shareholding in the club but ceded management control to Broughton and the board as a condition of their last refinancing deal with RBS in April, after rejecting an offer to take a 40 per cent stake in the club from the New York-based private equity firm the Rhone Group.

Rhone was initially mooted as a potential contender to launch a full buy-out of the club but it is not believed to be one of the parties to have tabled an offer. The firm, run by the billionaires Steven Langman and Robert Agostinelli, is not thought to have had any contact with Liverpool for almost two weeks.

Kenny Huang, the Chinese entrepreneur, remains a contender, while it is thought the Emirate of Sharjah retains some interest. The Kuwaiti Al-Kharafi family, first linked with a takeover of the club 18 months ago, are also believed to have been in contact with Barcap.

Sahara, the conglomerate owned by the Indian billionaire Subrata Roy, has said it is no longer considering a takeover.

The article doesn't say much of anything new, but it does confirm that the process is slowly moving along.

I also found the bolded part interesting about how the RBS-influenced board has blocked attempts by Hicks and Gillett to refinance their debt. Fans might not like Purslow and Broughton, but those guys are apparently doing the right things in some respects.

quote:

English Premier League (EPL) soccer team Liverpool will receive a bumper World Cup payout following the exploits of star players Fernando Torres and Dirk Kuyt.

The 2005 Champions League winners are in line for a cool US$700,000 jackpot – the third biggest in club soccer – from Fifa’s inaugural US$40 million World Cup payment pot for teams whose players took part in the South African spectacle.

The efforts of Javier Mascherano and, to a lesser extent, Englishmen Steven Gerrard, Glen Johnson and Jamie Carragher have all boosted the predicted bounty.

The Merseyside club’s welcome windfall is expected to comfortably surpass that of Chelsea (US$595,200) and Arsenal (US$560,000).

Incredibly, fierce rivals Manchester United – who only had five representatives at the tournament – will not even make the top ten with a modest US$300,000 bonus.

Topping the table will be Barcelona (US$820,800) - whose plethora of Spanish stars lifted the Jules Rimet trophy - and German-dominated Bayern Munich (US$755,200).

Big-spending Manchester City are expected to edge into the top ten with a sum of US$508,800.

Financially beleaguered Portsmouth are in line for more than US$300,000 gross and Championship winners Newcastle are hoping to collect a six-figure cheque.

I didn't know FIFA had set up this payment pot. Interesting.

The thing about words is that meanings can twist just like a snake, and if you want to find snakes, look for them behind words that have changed their meaning.
It's not as if there's much else in this thread, though? I'm not TyChan (more's the pity), but I hardly see the need.

Gobble Gobble Gobble!
Ty clearly has enough material and following that what he posts would create a successful thread from it's own, so wouldn't a dedicated thread be better?

It's just that while it's clearly worthwhile content to lots of people here, what he seems to be posting quite regularly are the rumours and murmurings of financial activity with nothing ever actually happening for over 6 months. I'm more than interested to read up on what actually happens to Liverpool when a sale actually goes through or big major news happens. I always check this thread for updates on financial assessments or updates on football clubs because I'm the kind of loser who likes that kind of stuff. I'm not really so fussed on this ongoing will-they-won't-they saga that the papers are dragging out, but I really like some of the more focussed financial discussion we have had in here.

I just thought I'd suggest it, not trying to be a cock or anything, just thought it might be specialist enough for a new thread. Apologies if offence caused.

Going to suggest that this is a good thread to keep it in. Most media articles about this are full of hype and bullshit.

If the threads on RAWK are any indication its best not to speculate too much because its just stressful and almost always based on fake-truths and hearsay. A dedicated thread would only encourage this and urgh, I can't take more of that.

Also, cool stuff about that 'jackpot'. Never knew about that.

I floated the idea of a separate thread in the Silly Season thread (since this was sort of tied into Liverpool's transfer options) and the consensus was to keep it in the finances thread since this thread gets a relatively low amount of traffic.
