SMKA - The 808 Experiment vol 3

Free album compiled by this SMKA guy, mostly comprised of southern guys but theres like 40 guys on here so there's some variety. Freddie Gibbs, DaVinci, Bobby Creekwater, Rittz, Nesby Phips, PRGz, guys like that. It's pretty drat good, and there's a lot of variety to the tracks and artists on there. I'm looking up the first 2 volumes now.

I know this was posted last page, but don't overlook this tape. There are some REALLY hot tracks. "Smoke & Ride" out and "Cloud of Endo" are incredible. This tape and the Rocks report have been in heavy rotation for me. Some of the best stuff I have heard in a while.

I've never heard of this D-Boss cat before but he sounds loving great slowed down and like I've said before Ron C and the Chopstars are the most consistently good c&s DJs. Content is kinda generic but that's beside the point for a c&s tape.

Yeah I actually read somewhere that he sometimes just writes stuff as exercises and sometimes that ends up being some of his most popular work. Or at least that's verbatim what he said about "Always Coming Back Home To You."
It doesn't really matter to me though I think it's about audience interpretation :)

i don't think that is completely accurate, man, i'm pretty musically active in the scene around here lately (dunno if you know madd hatter but he opens a ton of shows for like grouch and zion and poo poo (he's actually spinning for jel and dose one next motnha nd you should go, show is gonna SLAY) and we work together a ton) and most of the cats i have been working with lately are spread across the bay but i would definitely say the attitudes are different... like you really don't have zion i's and heiros and soulsides type poo poo in SF these days, i can agree about the gangster poo poo being really similar (like roach gigz pretty much sounds like an oakland rapper to me) but i feel like the SF 'backpack' thing leans way close to the slam poetry side of things (which i honestly hate) while the oakland dudes are a lot more musical and about melody

either way though, you have a point but i think i have a point too for sure, but yeah i can see both sides of it. you're probably from oakland right? i tend to hear this side of the argument a lot more across the bridge (i.e. from madd hatter, lol)

and i think, in my experience at least, it's a lot more common to see SF dudes stick with peninsula dudes like daly city, s. sf, palo alto and oakland dudes fuckin with like fremont, hayward, etc

but i also don't drive so my frame of reference is pretty limited, getting on the bart to get to oakland is a lot of work and usually just doesn't feel like it's worth it, so i'm definitely being a bit anecdotal

I'm from San Francisco. I think you may be right about SF generally having a different type of Backpacker scene than other parts of the bay. But keep in mind i'm biased towards SF music, that's what I listen to the most for Bay rap (Oakland comes in second), I guess that's proof right there that there definitely are lots of separate scenes here...but there are plenty of people working with each other regardless, it's all the Bay Area (and you know how much rappers in the Bay rep the Bay). For example, that first video I posted is an SF rapper (DaVinci) and an Oakland rapper (Ammbush). Ammbush is also one of the main producers for Davinci and their label. SF and Oakland rappers do work together a decent amount, at least. As for stuff like Zion-I, Heiro, Soulsides, coming out of SF, I agree there's nothing exactly like them...but maybe check these guys out:

Deuce Eclipse:
Deuce Eclipse - Nicoya Last Hope (he's done some stuff with Zion-I, in fact MC Zion/Zumbi is in the background in this video. And it's another example of the SF/Oakland connection, with an SF rapper filming his video in Oakland, and with some Oakland dudes in the video)
Deuce Eclipse ft. D.U.S.T "Blackout" (D.U.S.T is an Oakland rapper...yet another example for you of an SF/Oakland rap collab...D.U.S.T. is also from South Africa originally :eng101:)

Bored Stiff (i guess these guys are SF's closest Heiro equivalent...or maybe Living Legends equivalent, or something. They've featured The Grouch and Sunspot Jonz on songs before. They're also similar in that they too have been around since the early 90s):
Livin' Right - Bored Stiff
Bored stiff - Posta Sound
Bored Stiff - Zig Zaki
Bored Stiff - Might As Well Ft. Sunspot Jonz

Also here's "Team Backpack", featuring various Bay Area rappers (first two are from SF, last is from San Leandro. Also, WHITE RAPPER in it, since some of you are talking about that):

TeamBackpack Season 1 Ep: 6 (Jedi, Emoney, Shark Sinatra)

I like all their verses, but the best is a toss up for Jedi and Shark Sinatra in my opinion.

I'm curious as to what SF "backpacker rap" reminds you of poetry slam type of stuff though? I'm not exactly sure i agree with that (of course the meaning of "backpacker" rap has always been kind of vague in my opinion...it's more dependent on who the fans are than the music itself). To me, it seem lots of SF's stuff that could be considered "backpacker" also has a mixture of street-life/gangster/hustler stuff mixed into it, sort of a hybrid that can appeal to backpack rap fans and non-backpack rap fans alike. Plenty of it seems pretty melodic to me as well, i don't think Oakland has some kind of monopoly on that. I'm thinking of guys like Davinci and Equipto, to name a couple examples. These guys rap about street poo poo, selling drugs, hustling, getting high, bitches, etc at times, but they also really get into emotional stuff, social commentary, music itself, and their life experiences as well, often on the same track.
