I imagine this is a really complicated question, but roughly how much faster were the various versions of SF2 compared to WW?

Total newbie, started playing SSF4AE with some friends, so I picked up a Mad Catz TE stick for Xbox 360 after reading reviews about how great it was. It's a nice stick, though it's taking me a bit to get used to it. I have a question, though. I know it's got a selector for Left Stick, Dpad and Right Stick. SF4 will accept input from either Left Stick or Dpad, but is there one that is "better" or does that just change where it sends the input to the 360? It came defaulted to Dpad, and I was having problems with HCF motions not always coming out, so I tried switching it to Left Stick which helped quite a bit. But I'm wondering if it was just a placebo effect and I started focusing more on making sure the motion was accurate. Is there actually a difference between the two output modes or is it purely in case a game you play doesn't support one output or the other? Thanks.

No matter what the stick only has 4 directional switches anyways. Leave it on Dpad no matter what, stick mode has a little input lag for some reason.

I think most games just accept inputs from both d-pad and left stick no matter what. I dunno if there's any real difference in what you pick, but I've found my inputs to be far more reliable when it's set to d-pad.

Yeah, don't put it on LS for sure. If you walk back and forth on that setting you can see that it sort of lags or holds the input a little too long.

Alright, thanks for the info. I'll be sure to set it back to dpad the next time I play. On the plus side, it means I'm getting slightly less poo poo at the very basics of fighting games. That and figuring out EX Machine Gun Blow kicks rear end are the high points of the session. (Yes, I am that bad.)

Since you say you are a very beginning person I feel it might be a good idea to make sure you know that using EX Machine Gun Blow randomly outside of combos will generally not end well against smart opponents; it has no special kind of invincibility and if the opponent blocks it they can punish you for it. In combos though? Yes it is a very awesome move. You can follow up with all kinds of junk, especially in the corner.

Sadly, my only game-worthy internet is through a phone tether, and passing that from my PC probably wouldn't be great for fighting games. Works fine for stuff like World of Tanks, but wouldn't count on it for SSF4. As for random EX Machine Gun Blow, yeah, I know. But lots of stuff I do can get punished horribly right now. I try and work as much as I can into combos, but I'm having a hard time adapting to the stick right now. I sometimes get EX Jet Upper when I'm going for Ultra (Corkscrew Blow seems easier to use as a punish? And sometimes I can combo it off of EX MGB in the corner when it launches them), and I'm still so new I'm not getting even dashes to come out 100%. I think I'm so used to playing games on a pad that I need to train myself to let the stick return to neutral for a second between inputs.

Going back to American stickchat, what are the main differences between a Perfect 360 and a Competition/Eurojoystick? I'm assuming they're virtually nothing alike since their mechanisms are completely different, but is the P360 better enough to justify the much higher price tag (or, for that matter, is it better at all?) You would think it would be easy to find this sort of thing on Google, but either I'm retarded at googling or it's just not out there.

Toodles was working on a sanwa flash clone (old optical pcb for jlf) I dont know if thats for sale yet however. He WAS selling near EVO time but I havent seen the thread in a while.

So I'm a total scrub at fighting games, despite playing pretty much every street fighter since SF2 as they came out and spending a decent amount of time with Third Strike. So in a drunken haze I decided to combo purchase SSF4:AE and a hitbox: So far I'm enjoying using the hit box and for the first time in 15+ years I can actually Shoryuken on command 90% of the time. Also, the box shipped insanely fast. I got shipping notification saturday and got it monday.

Aw man, that thing is pretty sexy lookin'. IIRC the first ones were like home made and were basically a wooden box with buttons coming out of it. How much did that cost? I don't think I would ever make the switch to a hitbox, though. There's just something about a joystick that just feels right to me.

I have some mistakes doing DPs in older games like super turbo and the alpha series using a keyboard, so I doubt I could use a hitbox for those. For 3S and up (I guess, I've never played SF4 on a keyboard) you can just hold down and double tap forward for a DP, so that would work. I still feel cheap and lazy for doing that, though.

I played SF4 on a keyboard for a bit and to me, it's just so awkward. DP's are definitely doable but they are SO much more natural on a stick. I also like charge characters a lot so I'm kind of a japanese square gate purist. I can do Balrog's BnB juggle into ultra on a Japanese stick in my sleep. On the 3DS pad/stick it's pretty yucky. On a keyboard or an Xbox pad? I don't think I can even do it. gently caress, on the standard 360 pad I can't even do a hadoken. That thing was designed for navigating menus and switching to different guns, not for actually controlling any character in any videogame any way. But that's just me. I know a few pad players who are way better than I am, so it's all a preference thing.

Lately, I've been trying to find a local fighting game scene that is less than 6 hours away--one of the main reasons I didn't bother going to CEO. That, and I would actually like to start locally so if I get my rear end kicked, it won't be as expensive an rear end-kicking. Is there a Louisiana(esp. New Orleans) scene or similarly located? I know of a few Tuscaloosa things coming up and there doesn't seem to be a Louisiana/Deep South competition thread on SRK unless I'm blind--which is likely.

Unlikely here but worth posting: If anyone goes to University of Florida or lives close to Gainesville, we are having "Wednesday Night Fights" this Wednesday and every Wednesday to try to expand our scene and offer a weekly tournament. They haven't told us what location we can use (somewhere on campus) but hoping we can get a decent turnout... I can't go this week but should be able to go most weeks. We will have AE and Marvel 3.
