It's weird to me that this is now a problem for people. Back in the day when they made games like the original Mega Man, no one cared. You didn't have constant pop-ups, and objects in the world being highlighted to show you what to do. The well designed games found ways to make it obvious without beating you over the head with it. Remember too, games back then were created exclusively for children, now the business strategy has changed, and they are designed with adults in mind yet have gotten significantly more stupid.

Gaming has changed. Back in the day, things were still developing and growing and there wasn't really standardization, and new games were relatively far between. You had to go into a game and learn it fresh. Now there's a lot more standardization. If you go into any FPS you're going to expect certain ground rules. There are variations on those rules but they're within certain deviation.

It's the same for action games, or platformers, or even music games. Certain rules are established and people expect them to be followed, or at least followed for the most part. To break the rules is dangerous because it's a lot easier for someone to just go and find another game that follows the rules than to try to learn new rules. There's no shortage of games to play. In the NES days I would beat my head against a esoteric game because I often didn't have any other option. Now? I can go to the store or Steam and find a game of at least good quality in my genre of choice in minutes.

That isn't to say new stuff can't succeed but it usually needs to be pretty drat phenomenal to do so, and in doing so it usually sets a new standard of rules people will expect. (See: every superhero game and several non-superhero games now following the rules set down by Arkham Asylum even when it doesn't make sense.)

Megaman has a grand total of 2 mechanics. It was easy to figure out.

They still make games like that sometimes though. Look at Just Cause 2.

It's strange for those of us who grew up playing video games, but I'd imagine one of the contributing factors to the industry becoming the monster it is today is how accessible games have become.

Take Halo for example, the introduction of something such as auto aim seemed ridiculous at the time to PC gamers accustomed to mouse aiming, but look at what it did for the FPS genre.

It makes perfect sense.

It makes a vague amount of sense but certainly not perfect sense and it is certainly not how the phrase "in lieu of" should be used.

But then you have games like Mega Man X that have a pretty similar number of mechanics to a lot of new action games today, and still managed to be accessible without constant help screen popups.

Mega Man X wasn't exactly that complex in terms of mechanics. I mean up until X4 and X6, the games were pretty much the same, and even the inclusion of Zero didn't make it that much different. X7 added 3d and X8 I think at least makes some attempts to change the formula up. I mean the people in the Mega man thread seem to think that Inafune will be the great savior of the franchise if only Capcom would let him work on it, but I always keep in my mind that X5 was the last game X game that he was involved in, and I felt it was solidly average if not mediocre.

There is also the fact that as a kid, I had all day to play some of these games, and I couldn't get games as easily as I could now. If I bought a game, I would have to play it over and over until my next birthday or Christmas. But I am to the point now where if I blow 2 hours on something and I make very little progress, I move on to other things.

Tap "A" to drink!!!

X4 was probably my favorite of the X-series and the last one I really enjoyed. 5-8 were all mediocre to bad for different reasons. I don't think that they were criticized for being, 'more of the same', but that they started to deviate too much as to what made Mega Man fun.

Mega Man 9 and 10 at least showed that a basic Mega Man game at its core can be fun. They don't need to do all these ridiculous bells and whistles on it.

I don't know if Inafune would be the 'savior' of the series, but they should try making a new game that isn't an NES-era throwback. An art style like Hard Corps Rising blends 2D/3D pretty well.

I enjoyed X8, and no, I have never played X7 so it wasn't a case of X7 making me think X8 was amazing by comparison. The gameplay was solid, the music was awesome(some of the best in the series in my opinion), and it didn't have that stupid system for X's armors where I had to get all 4 pieces before I could use any of it.

I think X8 gets poo poo on a lot because of the gimmicky levels, but I really enjoyed the things it did. It actually tries to shift the narrative in another direction and they actually made all of them play differently.

:siren:Details on new Uncharted 3 patch:siren:

It includes 50 new trophies, a whole bunch of new treasures and treasure sets, a free new character, a whole bunch of new taunts, balance changes, fixes. There are now items you can wear that have specific perks as well, along with a brand new Tournament system where you bet credits to purchase new items.

Most exciting however, is the changes to The Lab playlist. Naughty Dog will be adding in brand new multiplayer maps for The Lab which are basic untextured, coloured block levels to play in. So we're basically going to be getting a whole bunch of new, free maps to play in when using The Lab playlist, which I think is awesome.

The link above has videos detailing the patch and new items etc, it's worth looking at if you enjoy Uncharted 3 multiplayer.

Is that PSN trophies, or an in-game mechanic?

I said come in!
Jun 22, 2004

They are actual trophies, but the catch is that they are exclusive to the paid DLC. There are micro transactions now, and you have to pay actual money each week for a new gameplay mode.

No, you don't need to pay money each week for the gameplay mode. They said you can buy extra tokens if you want to, but it's entirely optional. They give you 10 tokens by default for each tournament.

What? You know what pre-rendered means, right? Rendered from a 3d model/models? It's not unreasonable for those original models to still be archived somewhere, they could re-render them at whatever resolution they want.

I understand that but in the case of, say, RE1/2/3/Dino Crisis 2, the backgrounds were all designed at 640x480. The PC and Dreamcast ports are literally as good as those backgrounds can ever look. The character models and objects can be touched up and improved but this can nake the game look worse overall (RE2 Dreamcast is a good example, 60FPS and 640x480 backgrounds but stuff like shattered glass and other objects end up looking far worse).

In the case of RE0 and REmake Capcom is probably just lazy but I don't think they actually have a super high res set of assets for Onimusha/RE2/etc.

There is no way that the graphic artists originally created the 3D sets in a 640x480 space. Most objects would be so small they couldn't possibly be given any detail. The questions here are do they still have the original data, do they still have computers that can access/render it, and do they have the desire to do it.

You'd be surprised at how good companies are at losing their poo poo. For example, I believe Blizzard doesn't have the source to the original Diablo anymore. Poof. Gone. I have no idea how that could happen but many game companies really aren't run that professionally.

There's a couple of us over in the Vita thread that have. It's a really cool platformer first and foremost, though the integration of musical elements for everything starts out really simple and actually begins to inform the gameplay itself as you progress through the stages. Definitely worth checking out, and nothing beats getting two versions for the (fairly low) price of one.

When I purchased Resident Evil 5 DLC on my Australia account but had a non Australia copy of the game so it wouldn't read the DLC they refused to refund it so I could purchase the correct DLC. Sony customer support is pretty bad.
