Really, that was a bonus. The G3's really useful for delivering the books regardless of local and that's what drew me to it.

I see yet again, the UK is shafted with the new models. No 8.9" display Fire HD or Paperwhite touch. Is there any particular reason to cut out markets for this? I mean, surely more money is good for Amazon. Why would they want to lose out on that?

Man that video really killed my desire to switch from the keyboard. I guess I had huge expectations after seeing a few still pictures and such, but that brightness setting makes a huge difference. 10 in that video was drat close to 0 in daylight. If you can use it at full brightness to "fake" whiteness for as long as my current gen runs (this is just wishful thinking), I'd consider it, but I guess I was expecting a technology that isn't ready for the mass market yet.

When I saw the Paperwhite announcement and the videos/info afterwards, I thought I had my Christmas all sown up in a nice little bow. Now I am found wanting. So this is fake lighting? As in, you couldn't read this in the dark, correct? I was actually thinking of replacing my Kindle Touch with a Paperwhite one, but not if it's just dicking with the contrast/brightness. I just wish they'd bring the "time to end of chapter" feature to the regular Kindle Touch. I want that badly.

So, they aren't selling you the hardware because they can't recoup the cost of giving it to you in content sales.

It's real lighting, but the illusion of "whiteness" and higher contrast of the new screen seems to be caused, at least in part, by the lighting. So, if you are reading with the light off, the screen doesn't appear to be that different from the kTouch or 4th Gen Kindle.

Yeah I have 800 MB of books on mine (590 different ones) and that's enough of a pain. Though I guess if you were using really crappy PDF scans of books it could take up a lot more space. 250 megabytes for a badly done PDF of scanned pages of a book that would fit in 1 megabyte as proper EPUB or Mobipocket formats.

Man, I wish they'd do a new DX. I'd like something even larger really. Or higher rez. I've got lots of academic papers and books that I really only take the time to read when all I've got is my DX, but even with the DX a lot of PDF's are a pain to read.

I pre-ordered a wifi Paperwhite. I think it's finally time to upgrade my Kindle after 5 years. I really want USB charging and the ability to organize my books. With the light it seems the perfect time to make the jump. I have a question for you Kindle Touch owners: can you configure it so you can tap on the left side of the screen to go to the next page? I often read holding it in left hand. Though admittedly that's because it's the only easy way to hold a 1st Gen Kindle.

I don't know if rest of the screen technology is the same, but they improved the resolution from 800x600 to 1024x768. Should be the same screen as Kobo Glo got. Looks like e-ink technology moved up a notch and this has become the new industry standard.

They charge via usb which is a standardized 5 volts, so there would be no problem. Any usb charger that outputs 5 volts will work; I use my phone charger for my 4th generation Kindle.
