In fairness, "do you want to permanently disadvantage your character against everyone else in the game" is not a choice that you'd expect to be offered to you in an MMO. On a meta level, you'd expect that choice to end up giving you a functionally similar sidekick that fills in the space left by the one you killed.

Reading this LP made me sign up to TOR again after quitting following my first month of play on release. So thank you very much for making me forget how terrible this game really is. That said I am really enjoying my new Dark Side Inquisitor(Assassin) and finding some of the Darkside options absolutely hilarious

Trust Zash For now at least. She needs an errand girl so won't betray us for the time being.

I must confess that I have to respect Bioware actually making your choices have a long term consequence beyond what method of killing mobs is available to you. Unfortunately it seems that they're really inconsistent in applying it. So rather than being a neat feature it just comes off as a dick move.

The tools of a hero mean nothing without a solid core.

I can't recall if it was mentioned here or the MMOHMO thread, but in beta companions apparently could be equipped with kits for the various roles. With that option being able to kill em off makes more sense, but when roles were locked (I assume to make companions feel more distinct, or when they started limiting the NPC-specific armor to roles) it was something that necessarily had to be dropped.

CzarChasm

I don't like it when you're watching me eat.
I've seen about 5/8 of the story lines in their entirety, and I think there absolutely should be the option to kill off at least one of your companions, if not all of them. gently caress, look at Mass Effect 2 -> 3. If you killed off one of your crew members through poor planning/bad decisions, they didn't get into 3, but were replaced by someone of equal value.

I don't want to believe that people would be given an option that says [Performing this action will kill this character], and then have people be surprised when the person dies. Especially when I don't think you can make it off Dromund Kaas without seeing [KILL HIM] at least once in a conversation.

I don't want to believe that, but I think reality is going to make me sad. :(

Well, to be a little generous here, the idea of an MMO where decisions have permanent consequences is pretty much unheard of. Look at Black Talon. You have a 'kill him/spare him' option there, but if you don't like the one you picked, you can always go back and pick the other one.

I know TOR was supposed to be built around the idea of an MMO with choices that have permanent consequences to your character, but frankly I never saw one after getting to chapter 2 with Trooper and Bounty Hunter, and at least getting the ship with every other class except Inquisitor. So I can understand people getting caught off-guard when you suddenly get one choice that is very permanent.

^^^Basically it comes down to managing expectations. XCOM: Enemy Unknown does a very good job with this. You are quickly made aware that your troops are going to die and they're going to die a lot. So when it happens, it still stings, but you don't feel like throwing the keyboard through the monitor because this is exactly what you signed up for.

From what I've seen of TOR (which is just this LP), the "Moral Choice" aspect basically functions as a overly complicated way of picking a reward for completing a quest. And save for a single email exchange, once a quest is over there are little to no ramifications. To then all of a sudden make a choice carry long term consquences when all the prior choices had not is going to be rightfully infuriating.

Light Side/Dark Side points do have an affect in the long term. Besides giving you creepy meth addict facial features for going Dark Side, you can also unlock specific gear (and a mount) for going LS/DS. You get dick all for staying neutral, though they were allegedly going to "fix" that at some point.

The gear is nothing special stat-wise, it's just unique.

Actually, in a few of the storylines the Light/Dark choices can make things a LOT easier or harder depending. In the Warrior line there's a BEAUTIFUL bit later on that makes this abundantly clear.

The biggest issue, I think, is that they didn't see this and decide either A) modulate roles (so that Vette could be a tank, damage dealer, or healer from ranged) to make up for your personal shortcomings in roles, or B) make a "secondary" character so that if you REALLY didn't like their decision on an NPC you'd have a back up to replace them with.

The Trooper has the best backup in the fact you can keep a few people alive that fulfill the roles for your squad right off the bat. But you don't get to access them.

So I thought there was really only ever one real option to Shock people per conversation. For example the first time I did it on Korriban it comes up 3 times, but choosing it once will cut you off from the other options to use it.

Let's just say I was pleasantly surprised with one of the missions on Balmorra. :unsmigghh: It probably won't be in the first update but that should be ready soon.

And there are several characters who should die either for storyline actions or their general personality, or because as a DS/LS you would never trust/let that character near you, let alone be a companion. This applies more for the imps, but I can think of one Rep character I couldn't believe would join.

In my experience, feel free to record them. That way if there's something funny/amusing/that works with your narrative you can ask if it's alright to steal that bit.

For example, I'm pretty much set to take anything Darth Revan and/or Force related through Nar Shaddaa (not a spoiler because Baras), and I've actually got about 7 updates for Balmorra alone (which is probably comparable to what Moon Slayer will have); but once we hit Tattoine and gently caress Alderaan (not really spoilers because Baras), I'm not going to be doing many (or, in the case of the latter, ANY because gently caress Killiks.) of the Planetary quests so if you want to show them off I'm sure Moon would be more than happy to not have to showcase every single one.

Edit: Now, someone post something so I don't have to double-post an update. I won't be able to finish my Battletech update until Friday, but I should always have a good buffer for TOR.

And as for the votes on who Atronie should trust ya'll are some paranoid jerks.

Zash: 3

So really it's more about building Atronie's character. Especially at this point she's still loyal to Zash but everyone keeps saying to watch out for her despite being like the nicest person in the world so she's starting to have some doubts. Ghost DadKallig could be manipulating her to his ends so she is weary but she does believe he was telling the truth about being her ancestor. Sith Warrior: Update 23 - Meet Grow Dirt

It’s nice to find a little oasis in the middle of all this crazy.

And you call me the crazy one.

Hey, uh. Sith? Why are we going into this cave?
I sense a disturbance in the Force.
Oh, great. It’s another one of those boxes, isn’t it?
Wait. This is a lot of hardware for a cave.
… We just stumbled into a major Resistance base, didn’t we?

Watch this conversation

Hold on. How did you get in?
I can be very persuasive.
Also: this is a cave. It’s not as though it has a locked door.
All right. I can take a hint.
Listen, the people in that complex aren’t of any consequence and are certainly no threat to the Empire.
They have quite an escort for people of no military value. Try again.
I’m telling the truth! They’re Force sensitives, and the law on Imperial planets is, all Force sensitives must be trained as Sith.
If you don’t train, you’re executed as a potential threat. But not everyone would make it as a Sith.
Some people discover their sensitivity when they’re too old, or they just don’t have the will. So they go into hiding with us.
I can feel them reach out… but terror makes them unsteady. They grasp nothing.
That’s what our Jedi thought. They can feel a little, but they’re not worth training.
We get them to Republic planets so they can grow dirt or compose symphonies or whatever it is they’re good at.
But the Emperor keeps making laws that say they have to die.
If they are no threat, they have little to fear from me.
Are you serious? Your superiors would… well, I won’t tell them if you don’t.
What superiors?
Everyone in that cavern will have you to thank for their lives.
We’ll clear everyone out of the caves. It would be best if you could say you found nothing here.

Durmat should be down here, somewhere.
You seem really eager to kill this kid.
It isn’t eagerness. The longer we linger on Balmorra, the more likely it is we’ll be pressed into service--and when that happens, this whole planet will burn by my hand.

There is a great shadow descending on this world. I hope to have Baras’s work concluded before it arrives.
Ensign Durmat is this way.
Hurry, Vette!

I’d like to be off this planet before I’m made responsible for killing everyone here.

Come on, Zixx, throw me a bone. Who’s this agent that’s comin’ to interrogate me? At least answer that, will ya?
Fine, fine, stay clamped. I don’t care who it is, I ain’t talking. Nobody’s gonna get nothin’ outta me. Nothin’….

What did you say? Your dad is a what?
Yes, please repeat that, junior.
Oh… oh… oh… no.
This is a restricted area. What are you doing here? Who are you?
It’s--it’s not a who, it’s a what… S… Si… Sith….
He’s going to needa new pair of pants.
Who cares what Durmat needs. You gave me enough time to get what I need.
Uh, I have a very bad feeling about this.
Take a look behind yourself, Sith. That’s what two squads of the Republic’s finest looks like.

Two soldiers?
Four. :smug:

How have you managed to hide Republic soldiers on Balmorra when you’re all clearly wearing Republic insignia? No matter.

Surrender? You’re surrounded.
