Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

Here's a question: I want an SSD for my Lenovo X230 laptop but I really don't need more than 100 GB of space. I run a Linux distro which is pretty compact and I use the laptop strictly for coding, no audiovisual media storage or anything, and right now I'm under 50 GB used space on my 300 GB platter drive that came with the laptop. The OP says that you get the best performance from SSDs of about 256 GB capacity, and then goes on to recommend a bunch of ~256 GB drives. So, should I really care enough about the performance gain to go for one of those drives? The prices aren't really twice that of 128 GB SSDs, but they're still significantly more...

And are the recommendations any different around the ~128GB size range? The OP recommends the Samsung 830 256GB, but the 128 GB version looks way overpriced on Amazon - $105, so about 82 cents per GB...

You will be fine with a 128GB drive - but you need a 7mm drive for that laptop

I've been looking pretty hard at SSD's the last few days and do believe I've narrowed down my options. I know the Samsung 830 is always a viable option, but I've got two others in mind that are a bit cheaper that I think will fit my needs just fine.

I've narrowed it down to these two:

SanDisk Extreme 240GB SDSSDX-240G-G25 ($160 currently)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006EKJ8UI/

or

Mushkin Enhanced Chronos Deluxe MKNSSDCR240GB-DX 240GB ($180 currently)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226226

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro on Mountain Lion with 8GB of ram. I know AnandTech recently said that Sandforce drives perform the best on Mountain Lion, which is why I've been favoring these two over the Samsung 830.

They both get reviews of being DOA and I know the SanDisk had some pretty big problems with firmware, but that supposedly has now been fixed. For you all that know these drives a lot better than I, which one is the better choice?

Thanks for the help.

That's Intel's new 335 series 'budget' drive, and apparently the problem is that it's over-reporting of write/erase cycles.

Pretty much only useful for a laptop with a single 9.5mm bay. In that case they're actually not a bad device, providing you a reasonable amount of storage space (500 or 750GB) and some of the benefits of a SSD--and considering they're all of $10 more than normal 500GB 2.5" drives, they're worth the price. However, they aren't going to provide you true SSD performance (it'll speed up your commonly used files, but uncommon ones are still at normal HDD speeds), so if you're able to use two drives, that's the better option, albeit more expensive.

I ordered a 128gb m4 MSATA drive recently, and it shipped with the troublesome 01MG firmware. No worries I thought, I'll just downgrade it to the 000F. But it seems there isn't a downgrade method for the MSATA version!

I've emailed Crucial support to see if they are expecting a new firmware any time soon, or will look to provide a method for downgrading the firmware, but not heard back yet.

Trouble is I'm in the UK and so far the only other MSATA drives I've managed to find are MyDigitalSSD which I've never heard of and then OCZ, so I'm stuck with a dodgy Crucial drive until they address the issue.

Anyone know about 'MyDigitalSSD'?

Or anywhere in the UK that offers other MSATA drives?

Or know what Crucials track record is like on things like this, and whether I should hold it out until they fix it?

Crucial has been pretty terrible with firmwares as of late. There's already a fix for the problem, but they're only releasing it to OEMs, and installing it will void your warranty. Also, I don't even know if they've released the fix for MSATA drives yet. It took them five months to go from the buggy 0009 to 0309, so don't expect them to release anything soon.

Also keep in mind that Crucial is owned by a memory chip manufacturer, not a controller manufacturer, so I doubt they have the best firmware development team.

TigerDirect has the same drive for $130 after mail-in rebate, it's $160 before MIR; which is better? I'm admittingly thinking of just getting the 180 GB instead, since I have yet to be pushing the capacity of my existing Intel 320 Series 80 GB SSD.

Those are the exact two drives I had been looking at instead of the Samsung 830 everyone seems to love (I wanted the SandForce goodness for maximum non-Windows compatibility, just in case I use this in a Mac or my Nintendo Wii or something). I've even recommended those two drives to a friend since they seem to have some of the best stuff in them (SandForce 2281 & Toggle NAND).

They both perform similar in the benchmarks from what I've seen. I was leaning toward the Mushkin drive (it even comes with a 3.5" bracket), but I had a gift card to Micro Center, and the SanDisk was the only thing they had locally.

I got the SanDisk this past Friday and have been having a blast with it. Hella fast. Just make sure to load the latest firmware (mine came with the older one). The latest firmware is from October, so any reviews before then that mention TRIM or performance issues may not apply now. I know SanDisk even provides alternative, enhanced compatibility firmware for the device for use in certain Macs (it helps it when used with some NVidia chipsets used in some Macs).

The Mushkin is slightly older, I believe (6-8 months older than the SanDisk, maybe), so that may mean it has a more "proven" track record. It was recommended in the OP, as well.

Yeah, I looked at the 830 but the M5P benchmarks blew it away (as they should, being a much newer drive). The 840 Pro was significantly more expensive. I'm quite happy with my Plextor.

The one big thing driving me to the Mushkin was the recommendation in the OP, especially since it was the only other recommended drive for a Mac besides the Samsung 830. The price point on the Intel that was recommended was nice, but if I can get a little better performance in the SanDisk or Mushkin for only $20 or so more, it might be worth it.

From what I've read, the problems with the nvidia chipsets were in older Macs, so I'm not too worried about that (but it's nice to know they have a firmware fix for it).

Thanks for the reply, it definitely helps. I hate how difficult picking one of these out is, but I want to make sure I get something decent that isn't completely breaking the bank.

Doesn't seem like it's a very well-known model, but it apparently uses the Sandforce 2281 controller that a bunch of other good drives use, and G.Skill produces good RAM so I guess I trust them not to have faulty flash chips in their drives either... and it's 7mm so I can actually use it in my laptop, that's always a plus :)

This is what he's talking about, so both. Remember, the TRIM command just acts as a hint to the built-in GC in the drive.

I should expand on that last bit as it's something I wasn't clear on until recently (Anand's SSD DC S3700 chat with Intel is VERY informative). The TRIM command informs the drive that LBAs are no longer in use, the drive isn't obligated to do anything in particular with that information. In general the controller marks the blocks as free in its blockmap in memory and queues the blocks for recycling by the garbage collector, but some controllers (JMicron) simply do nothing, essentially "faking" TRIM support. Nobody actually erases the blocks as soon as they are TRIMed.
