On the PS3 it's telling me to press L2 immediately after initiating the takedown to steal the pistol before pressing R2. I've customized my controls so you're looking for whatever brings up the weapon select function menu if you're on the PC.

It pretty much fixes all the things that were complained about from FC3. I would recommend doing a few sidequests/outposts/radio towers and then do a story mission to mix things up a bit, though. I went through compulsively unlocking every radio tower and capturing every outpost after the tutorial finished, and started to get a little burnt out by the time I was done. Especially since you end up with a billion skill points you can't use because you have to play story missions to unlock skills.

I can't help it, it's the same story when I play Assassin's Creed games. Gotta open up that map!

For most of the game it's quite easy if you use stealth effectively. The AI doesn't really know what to do with itself if it can't hear you.

I plugged in my X360 controller just to check the console instructions and it turns out that the PC tutorial for Gunslinger Takedown is straight up wrong - it says that you need to quickly press the left mouse button, but you actually have to press the right mouse button, and then shoot the pistol normally with LMB.

Thanks everyone in the thread for VPN help. Turns out my PC actually handles this game pretty well because I took a chance and bought it. Can't run it at 1080p but at 720p it's on High or Very High for everything with shadows at low and no lag whatsoever. For those who may be in my boat:

I'm in a similar boat. It worries me that this entire thread is pretty much just dumbshit questions from PC users about performance/DRM/VPN stuff and minor complaints about everything and the game is barely out at all. A game that gets 10/10 reviews everywhere normally has a 300 page thread at this point full of people ranting endlessly about how the game is definitely GOTY and they're thinking of ways to commit suicide because Amazon hosed up the shipping on their pre-order. That $60 is a good bit of money for me, and I kind of need to see more positive stuff about tigers mugging people and less "how do I fix minor graphical glitch #824" to feel comfortable blowing it on silly computer shooting.

Hang on to them for now, you'll need them for at least two different mid-level crafting items. I can't forget which, but there are two for sure. You should probably make hunting and crafting bigger ammo pouches, etc, your first priority.

So far the only real negative I've found is that you can't take your knives out underwater, so my dream of having a knife fight with a shark is not becoming a reality.

Maybe this changes (I hope it does)

Also the enemies can be really, really loving stupid, especially once you get a decent sniper rifle or get good with the bow. There's one mission where you have to take out the weapon cache using some explosives, and you can go to a lookout point. I had a silenced sniper rifle and managed to take out all the guards with well placed headshots and they never once found me, even when they realized their buddies were being picked off one by one. Never even went for the alarm, either.

A group of them managed to figure out that maybe I was in the little shed thing overlooking the base, but I managed to cook a grenade and take out four of them at once. They still didn't decide to hit the alarm. The only guy who did was the one who eventually saw me, and only then did he run to the alarm. He got shot in the head before he could activate it, though.

It can work hilariously, though. I managed to lure a tiger near an outpost I was going to attack. The guard spotted the tiger, started shooting at it, then the tiger killed all the guards in the base. This counted as me "liberating" the base, and I got a ton of bonus XP for not being detected/raising any alarms.

I literally did nothing and watched the tiger house these guys. The tiger liberated the base, not me.

GUI
Nov 5, 2005

I'm sitting at 70% general completion rate and outside the dumb story my complaints are the obtrusive UI, bland sidequests and easy combat.
The side quests are all so simple that they feel like an afterthought most of the time. There was one where I had to repeat the process of picking up flowers outside some guy's house three times then it ended. Another had me talking to a woman, walking five feet, talking to a man then walking back to the woman and talking to her. Lastly, other two had me going to 3 designated areas, picking up key objects and going back to the guy who gave me the mission. They're all so simple that I wonder why they even exist.
The UI everyone's complained about already: you constantly get remainders while exploring about your main story objective and constant pop-ups every time your wallet or backpack gets full, which is going to be very often early on in the game when you have no upgrades. The huge PRESS SPACE/A/X TO CLIMB whenever you're near a set of ropes strips away any kind of challenge in those radio tower jumping puzzles.
The combat, even on Hard, never gets too challenging. It starts out slightly difficult for the first two hours of the game when you have no ammo/item upgrades and lovely weapons, but after you get those and some higher tier weapons (silenced sniper rifle and MP5) the game becomes extremely easy, even more so with how stupid enemies are if you're sneaking. Weapons also boiling down to "each one in each category is better than the one before it" also strips out a lot of options for you, if you want to use the AK over better weapons you're just artificially making things harder on yourself.
The exploration is something that's extremely good, but when you buy collectible maps it becomes rather pointless to explore on your own since the hundred collectibles happen to be placed in every uniquely designed area of the game, which means you'll never have a moment like in STALKER where you'll come across something cool by accident.

That said, I think it's still a very good game that deserves a purchase if you're interested in the genre. It's quite unique considering the only big budget games of this type are Bethesda's (and those are terrible :smug:).

Ending spoilers: I have the feeling that the Citra ending for the saving your friend's path would be less jarring had you actually had more than 4 or 5 conversations with her before she spouts her devoted love for you. There seems to be a big gap in the plot once you get to the second island that the developers didn't quite fill in regards to your friends (who you already said good-bye to) and Citra.

Still, the Citra path isn't entirely unforeseen since every conversation with her revolves around the warrior myth of the creation of the islands and how you are the greatest warrior the Rakyat have ever seen. She basically sees you as the reincarnation of the Warrior God. Dennis's unrequited love for Citra was a little ham-handed though since it only shows up in two scenes and a telephone call: Him getting extremely drunk after the first time she jumps your bones, and the save your friends ending.

I would say that she just loving kills you was pretty unexpected for me, sure I knew she was a bit insane but why the gently caress would she just kill the reincarnation of the warrior god just like that?

I had a very similar thing, but I didn't lure the tiger myself. I came up to the outpost, spotted all the guys, found a hole in the fence to go in, so I go around to the hole and am getting ready to assault the outpost. At that very moment, a tiger attacks, and mauls everyone in the base. I get the outpost cleared with undetected/no alarms.

The best, though, is that just as the last guy is about to die, I'm suddenly hit by something. I spin around, missing the last of the tiger's carnage, and discover that there is a second tiger who found me while I was watching the other tiger wreck the outpost. I get the little "outpost cleared" movie, then run for the dudes who have just arrived to hold the outpost, getting them to help me take down both tigers.

They didn't know what was coming.

Slowly, methodically, I stalked the bandits' camp. It was hard enough just getting to the fence unspotted, any misplaced step could spell my end. I listened closely to their chatter, straining to hear if anyone had broken away from the pack to take a piss.

I came to the edge of the fence at the main gate. Suicide, but the alarm was just too close, begging to be disabled. I notched an arrow, waiting for the lone guard who seemed to wander out of bounds every five minutes or so. I could hear him coming. I brought the arrow back as far as it could go, eyed the opening of the fence in my sights...

Then I heard it. A low, soft growl. It was quiet, but I knew at that second it was nothing less than the sound of the reaper - coming for me at last. I turned around slowly.

"Clever girl..."

I had to smile, as my striped attacker dug his oversized claws into my throat, tearing at my flesh. After all, someone on this island has to die eventually. It might as well have been my turn.

I loving love this game. :buddy:
