I just can't get into this game, unfortunately. What's the point of giving the enemies this pretty decent AI that allows them to flank me and all that if they're always going to be on my minimap? The combat is not only less frequent than in the first two games, but mind-numbingly simple by comparison. I know most folks won't feel this way, and that's cool, but it just makes me wish I was playing Far Cry 2. A missed opportunity, since this game certainly does make some specific mechanical strides forward from that game.

Please excuse me if I show up every now and then in this thread to talk about how much I wish this wasn't the case

It certainly hasn't stopped me from playing the poo poo out of the game, but I generally agree with you. A Far Cry 3 with a more stripped down, FC2-esque HUD would be pretty rad. Hopefully gibbed will be able to work his magic with this one, it seems like one of the easier things to address.

Is this the first opening sequence you've ever experienced? The first thing you normally do in a game is go through a tutorial. Far Cry 3 is no different in that respect.

The mission reminders got to go, though.

Even given this is on consoles, I just DO NOT understand the "you are leaving the mission area"

So loving what?

Option A: You let me. I come around from the back. I kill the people. Who cares? I was going to kill them anyways, so I did it my way. So I had fun. Isn't that the whole POINT OF THE GAME?

Option B: I leave the mission, and come back to complete it later. I guess it would be frustrating to accidentally leave a mission when you're almost done, but no worse than DYING AND STARTING OVER BECAUSE YOU WALKED TOO FAR.

I just... I simply cannot understand it. Its not just consoles, because Consoles have to be able to render the game world. Either they can or they can't. There's no reason why a story mission would restrict that, unless they can only spawn enough enemies for the missions by restricting you, which seems untrue. You still get into fights when not on missions. Hrm.

Adraeus posted:

Thanks for assuming the worst, not like I've been playing games all my life or anything. Nope, this is my first game! Its a good 'un. :)

Dude, I gave a perfect counter-example even: STALKER. The game just loving dumps you in the world and lets you have fun. It has no misgivings about what it is, the game is open-world.

Plenty of games don't have long rear end tutorials, or make them optional.

You're telling me the GTA4 or Kingdom Hearts style 2-hour tutorial is ACCEPTABLE and has now become the norm? Oh gently caress no. HELL no.

Lets see, games I've played recently... Halo, Borderlands, Dishonored, no tutorials. Xcom, skippable tutorial. Hitman did have a forced tutorial level though. So that's 1 out of 5 games that have forced tutorial missions rather than just letting you read the manual.

The opening sequence wasn't that long, sure. And it was pretty thrilling, too. But that's not the end of the tutorial BS, they're still leading you around by the hand, constant popups of how to do basic things, and like I said earlier, I just naturally wanted to drive back to the quest guy, and I failed for not fast traveling? Even though its 10 feet? Blagh, enough tutorials!

I sort of agree that it's an open world game and mission areas are a little silly, but if you want to leave the mission area so bad, don't start the mission in the first place. It's not that hard.

On a tangent from the racist tropes: are there any women in this thread who have completed the game? What did you think of the entire Citra thing? Because it strikes me as very much a plot written by straight men for straight men, and while that isn't in itself a bad thing - a straight white male's story is as valid as any other's - against the backdrop of almost every other game being about straight white men it's a little disappointing that such a gender-centric plot is contender for game of the year.

e: Reading that back, before criticising please take into account the "against the backdrop" bit.

Also, as a thought experiment consider the narrative had all the genders been flipped. Especially the ending, and the bit where you wake up with Citra straddling you.

Even without flipping the genders, I have to say the whole Citra thing was creepy/rapey as all get out from the get go, and the "waking up with her on top" thing was possibly the most ridiculous point in the story. In fact, the whole interaction with her and the hint that Vaas didn't leave completely of his own accord kinda made me wish there was a much earlier point with a prompt to shoot her in the face.

Zaphod42 posted:

Yeah, guns in Farcry 2 always felt way off to me. I'm hoping with all the carnage in this one it won't bother me as much, I'll have to see how it goes as I play more. But guns should kill people in 1 or 2 hits, while in Farcry 2 I could unload on somebody with a submachine gun, several shots to chest and face, and they'd still stand and shoot back, that's ridiculous.

I also found myself testing out the 1911 against some metal targets, and I was disappointed the bullet sounds weren't quite as good as I hoped. I guess maybe I'm spoiled from STALKER, but hearing bullets pang into metal or whizz off as a ricochet is really great for immersion. Guns should have a pop...pang sound when you shoot at a metal object, with a tiny delay between the gunshot. Everything seems to have a dull bang when you shoot it in farcry 3.

Again, super minor complaints, I fully expect to not care when I'm wingsuiting at 200mph and lighting fields on fire with a flamethrower.

The guns in 3 are much, much deadlier-a headshot is a guaranteed kill with any gun, and hitting a non-armored enemy in the chest 2-3 times will put them out of commission for good. The problem with the whizz/pop-pang thing is that FC3 still has hitscan weapons and I'm pretty sure has no distance/sound travel calcs, unlike BF3/Stalker. I agree about the sounds, honestly-aside from unsilenced 416 and the sig AMR, they're pretty drat satisfying, IMO.

The last sentence nails it, though. Getting a mission where you're literally going around and burning the gently caress out of a plantation of weed while dubsteppy reggae is blasting is one of the most fun things I've seen. It's too bad you can't flame/throw poo poo when wingsuiting or gliding though.

What a horrible thread to have a post.
I read that RPS article "things I hate about Far Cry 3" and while he made some good points, there's one thing that's painfully obvious:

The reason they only have 10 AI barks and some of the animals share sound effects is because this game open world sandbox game has to run on a console that may or may not have a hard drive and has less than 500 meg of RAM that was designed in late 2004.

I'm going to be glad when this generation of consoles is dead and buried because game developers are having to make really sour trade-offs to get their ambitious games running on this busted hardware. And I bought the Xbox version, for Pete's sake.

Doesn't seem to be, we're all just as desperate for it as you are.

Its such a big deal that the RPS guys actually said,

"it’s evil. It’s a force of evil. And the serious issue here is that it demonstrates something very concerning – they absolutely cannot have sat down anyone from outside the dev team to play the game before finalising it. Because any non-tiger species would have turned around and said to them, “If you don’t make this godforsaken text box stop appearing, I’m going to hunt every one of you down and put you in a zoo.” It smacks of extreme arrogance, of failing to playtest properly, or of just hating humanity."

Eh, really I went into FC3 having read earlier reviews that mentioned stuff about intrusive HUDs and it didn't bother me how much stuff was already on the screen.

But it's just that it keeps bothering me about a quest but I can't tell, from neither my minimap nor the M-button map, where it wants me to go to complete this quest. That's sort of silly.

But thankfully/hopefully, this game will be modded up within the week to fix all of the silly issues like that

Did you zoom all the way out? If you haven't hit the radio towers for an area, you get this blue checkerboard-ish pattern over area that is actually part of the map. If you're talking about the early Dr. Earnhardt quest, that location is way out to the west from the starting zone in an area where you haven't yet revealed the map.

Oh man. For the longest time I was having problems with stealth. I can hide from the guards just fine, but I didn't even want them to start looking for me.

After restarting a Hit quest for the third time I managed to do it. I started by thoroughly scoping out the encampment to make sure I had evey enemy tagged: a few regular guys, a heavy and the boss. I noticed that although most of the guys stayed together, one of them was further away. I lured him into the bushes with rocks, took him down and dragged his body even further away so it wouldn't be spotted.

Doing that opened up a gap in the enemy patrols so I could repeat the process for two other guards. The ones that I couldn't lure close enough for a stab got an arrow in the back. The final two enemies were the boss, who had to be killed with a knife, and the heavy. While the heavy was looking away, I distracted the boss with a rock and swooped in to knife him.

With only the heavy remaining, I snuck up as close as I could and fired a flare into his chest, killing him with a single shot.

Every enemy killed, not one alerted the others. Some did manage to notice a body but an arrow took them out before they could shout for help.

This game is great.
