Hey friends. After that amazing gamestop sale, I'm trying to convert my ps2 collection for quick loading from a hard drive, but have realized rather quickly that using expanded .isos will fill the hard drive unnecessarily. I've seen that .bin/.cue files are a lot smaller when converted back to .isos. Are those compatible with HDLoader, or is there another program that works with them?

Bin/Cue files are pretty much just ISO files with a cue file (like a "cue sheet") which is just a tiny text document telling the bin what to do (this is only really needed for games using redbook audio like MK Trilogy). I've never heard of a bin/cue file being smaller than an ISO, at least with PS2 games.

I ordered a Saturn game but the longbox came shattered.

Are the Sega CD/Saturn cases the same (NTSC), and where could I get a replacement for cheap? I don't have any local areas selling cheap sports Saturn games I think.

Unless there are parallel port dongles I don't know about, I don't think they could bypass the main region code/valid disc check. The Gameshark was specifically to bypass a software-level check some games implemented but you still needed the console itself to have a modchip to deal with the hardware-level bootup check.

VV Well I learned something today.

Nah, the parallel port devices let you do the disc swap trick on some games

I get a hint of the copyright screen, and nothing after. Also the screen is tearing like gently caress horizontally. :gonk:

Eventually, while not on the Genesis and flipping through the TV's menu for ideas, the image finally stabalizes. I hook up the Dreamcast and turn it on and am rewarded with a stable, good-looking image. I play a round of Crazy Taxi.

I plug in the Genesis again, this time with Virtua Racing in it. Powers up just fine,...

Apparently this Trintron is doing this every time on startup, like it needs to "warm up" before it decides to play nice. Is this TV dying or just getting old, or something more/less sinister?

And any Genesis Model 2 av cable to connect the 32x to the tv.
There's also some metal clips that go on the Genesis' cartridge slot, but they're totally unnecessary.

So if I can find a barebones 32X, all I'd need is that patch cable, the AC adapter, and the 32x AV/cable (or would my Model 1 AV cable work?)

Speaking of emulation stuff, I found two recently that I really like:

BizHawk is being made by the a couple of guys in the TAS community, but it's very usable without that. It's pretty new, so some stuff is missing (for example, additional NES sound chips don't work yet) but it already emulates a lot of systems (Atari 2600, Colecovision, GB/GBC, NES, PC Engine, Master System/Game Gear, SNES and TI83 Calculators) pretty drat well for the most part, with more (Genesis, Commodore 64) in the works.

OpenEmu is a similar project, but for Mac. It has a really beautiful UI that auto-downloads box art and the like, without being as excessive and OCD-only as Hyperspin and co. It's still in private beta but the source code's available if you're brave enough to compile it yourself.

I'm looking at getting a 32X for my Model 1 Genesis/Model 2 Sega CD setup. First of all, does the 32X even work with the Model 1 Genesis? What all cables and adapters are necessary to connect it properly? A complete 32x seems to be pretty pricey, so I'd like to just get one with only the pieces necessary to hook it up. I'd probably end up getting that three way AC adapter thingy too, to save some power strip space.

Also, is there anything to the rumors about the 32X damaging genesis games? I remember some talk of that when I originally had one as a kid but wasn't sure if there was anything to it.

In all my travels I've never seen any 32x games. How common are they? Also, during a weak moment on wholesale lots I've acquired more Genesis model 1's bringing my total to 5. What is a good start for modding a Genesis?

Just installed my first battery holder on a snes cart, and saving functionality still works. Feels good, man. Did it on a cart I didn't care about first (FF6 japanese), but I was stupid and forgot to copy the old save file over first. Oh well.

Note to self, buy a desoldering pump. Desoldering Braid works too, but a pump would've been much easier. Don't know where my old one went...

I've never been able to figure out desoldering braid. How does it work? I place it on what I want to no longer have solder, and heat it with the iron, and nothing really happens (maybe a TINY spec will eventually transfer over to it, but in no way is it something I found could remove the battery from the PCB).

Put flux on the braid. Put braid on solder you want removed. Put soldering iron on braid over to the solder you want removed. Watch solder flow off the PCB and up braid.

While it is incredibly useful (especially for large solder points) I find it to be a bad idea for super-close soldering points because I've actually had the flux cause a bridge/short which I know sounds insane but I've read other people do the same thing. Some people will still use flux in crazy tight spots but then wash the motherboard with distiller water but hells no I ain't going that far :colbert:

I have two different tins of flux (one from radio shack, and one from dealextreme), and unless I'm using it wrong, they've never made a difference. Stuff that I have trouble soldering to, will still be difficult regardless of the use of flux.

Desoldering braid should already have flux on it anyway. I have to put a decent amount of pressure on the braid itself before it starts to pick up anything. That said, braid is generally more useful for desoldering surface mount stuff as opposed to through hole stuff.

I was almost tempted to buy this almost $200 soldering iron, but I've already spent too much money.

Buy it. The Hakko 808 is the best money/time investment you'll ever make. You could go on using braid to desolder things (if you truly hate yourself) or use the hakko and be able to desolder through hole components in about 3 seconds. I've used mine daily for about two years, can't imagine being without it.

Then the 808 is definitely not for you. It needs special tips, replacement parts and maintenance.

A good pump needs a replacement tip every now and then (in three years, when you accidentally melt it shut).

I'm an arcade collector that does board work. I pull chips and put them in sockets frequently. You don't need an 808. It's actually not any more efficient, and completely overkill for anyone whose day job isn't pulling components.

nah there's no benefit. You definitely are way better off just going right to the XRGB Mini. The DVDO Edge might be for the Dreamcast or the DVDO Edge's nice zoom capabilities, but I'd argue the picture would be worse (definitely would be more lag, without a doubt).
