Well, Death's style of death metal has never been one of my foremost favourite subgenres so I just never had the inclination to check them out. And there are a LOT of metal bands in the world, you know? There's just so much stuff to listen to. I mean, Helloween are pretty legendary in their own field too but I'm sure there are metalheads who laragely stick to the heavier side of the spectrum and never really checked them out. Not being defensive or anything, just saying.

If you like death metal even a little bit you should listen to Death. I'm not crazy about their music but it pretty much is death metal 101 and that is a mandatory course.

Death is an awesome band and I think Symbolic is their defining album. It just seemed like a really 'tasteful' death metal album to me that actually has something to say.

While I can't vouch for the absolute origin of that rumor, I'm certain ANUS.com's "prozak" was rather (tediously) persistent about it. That dude had a weird vendetta against Schuldiner. I remember some kind of back-and-forth between him and Chuck's mother. In light of my dumb name I should add that I have nothing to do with that site. e: haha, christ, googling some key words brings up all kinds of discussions about it, including one at Stormfront. This -- http://www.anus.com/metal/about/metal/chuck_schuldiner/ -- may have been where it started, dated December 2003. Of course now that I've linked to ANUS, prozak, being the trackback Candyman that he is, will probably show up here -- if not him then one of the other hemmorrhoids.SRP at ANUS posted:While his family denies it, Chuck Schuldiner died of AIDS. His family claims cancer, but his death certificate reads pneumonia without a contributing cause, which is the most common diagnosis of death from AIDS -- in the shorthand a doctor would write it to avoid pointing out the real cause. AIDS, as an immune disease, does not itself kill the victim but enables simpler diseases to do so. Highly placed sources identify Chuck as engaging in high-risk behavior, and the time period between his diagnosis with "cancer" and his death fits the pattern of an AIDS patient who is unaware he needs retrovirals for the first years of his infection as it slowly develops from HIV into full-blown AIDS. Chuck and his family deny that he died of AIDS because of the ongoing stigma of having AIDS in a homophobic genre like metal. Even in this, Chuck was forging reality and denying the obvious, to the detriment of death metal.

Devin Townsend was excellent at last night's show, but then his gigs always are. Fear Factory were utterly horrific though. Burton's voice has gone, and during 'Linchpin' there was a collective sense of "We...we are hearing this, right? It's not just me?" at just how far he's fallen. Then Dino took the mic and introduced one of the songs off Demanufacture by saying that it was an album that was a classic, "right up there with Reign in Blood by Slayer". The D in Dino clearly stands for delusional. (plus, we all know Hell Awaits is better)
