Yeah, a lot of military code names are either silly or literally randomly generated. Or randomly generated and thrown back until they get something that sounds cool, because in the military your operation/gadget/pointless directive needs to sound like it has some testicular fortitude.

Yes, and my point is that the concept of using giant robots to fight giant monsters is more believable than anyone thinking the robot names sound anything approaching cool and/or testicularly strong.

Can someone clarify why evangelion keeps getting brought up in relation to this movie? Is it because this movie's plot is going to get really subversive about half way through (and then have the final 10 minutes of the film just be some place holder shots with some narration because the budget ran out) or is it just because literally the first giant robot anime everyone thinks about is evangelion? Watching the trailer I really don't see anything evangelion related at all, besides giant robots but that's hardly what made evangelion's famous, but obviously the action sequences aren't everything.

Also whoever it was that said the jagers need to form up into voltron better get in contact with Del Toro for the sequel's screenplay brainstorming.

My only real guess is that most Giant Robot shows people are really aware of these days is stuff like Gundam, which is "dudes in robots fighting other dudes in robots," and think that "giant robots fighting mysterious monsters" is an Evangelion thing other series aped rather than a classic staple of the genre.

Because early info about the show made it sound like pilot psychology was going to be a big deal, in addition to the other obvious resemblances.

(Also, the final episodes of Evangelion were storyboarded that way, it had nothing to do with the budget. :goonsay: )

That's just off the top of my head, thinking about patriotic or culturally-American names that would fit the bill for an American machine meant to save humanity by punching aliens to death that has to give hope to people. Big O was awesome. Dorothy was a cool character. Deadpan spunky android maid.

I kind prefer the Big O "rocket punch" over the one in the trailer, as seeing that huge piston in Big O's arm slam down on someone's face was awesome.

I think the main reason, aside from the tagline, is because the script was rumored to be an Evangelion script at one point or something, I think Del Toro had been trying to make it for awhile but I'm not sure.

Well, the robots are about the same scale, the monsters are about the same scale, the monsters to appear in the middle of the Pacific and rampage towards inhabited countries on the Rim like Angels do, there's a scene with a kid alone in a deserted city watching a monster attack while conventional forces mount a doomed counterattack and air raid alarms go off in the background, there's a scene with a monster strapped to the back of an aircraft carrier, there's a scene with two pilots performing actions in unison, and the tagline to the movie is "To Fight Monsters, We Created Monsters" which is exactly what happens in Evangelion.

Where is my robot named FREEDOM BOT god dammit I want a robot movie with names that make sense and well-scrubbed All-American heroes who have football trophies and wives and children they're fighting for and they fight well because they're war vets who used to fight brown people until they learned what war REALLY was and now they fight for humanity!

The real military might name something FREEDOM BOT but when it happens in a movie you're announcing exactly what kind of movie it is, and that's not the kind of movie this is. Thank you.

The fact that the units in Evangelion are called Evangelion Units 00-13 (and Jet Alone) would lend credence to the idea that the names are more paying homage to giant robot anime in general instead of specifically Eva.

I just realised that this is not the first recent Western production to have the premise be "people from various nations come together and fight aliens with giant robots". This movie, apparently based on a Heavy Metal comic, came out this year.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STnf9qPr97I

To be fair though, this was made by an Asian studio. I watched it. The 3D is used pretty well in a few scenes, but I felt the big battle sequences could have been more exciting. The dialogue can be pretty bad too. I do credit them for making the characters as 'global' as possible (there protagonists are British, American, Irish, Canadian and Malayan), even if the World War 1 and IRA subplots were only given passing mentions instead of being major subplots.

As you yourself allude to, though, isn't your average mecha show also pretty generic? I mean, the biggest difference I'm thinking of is that the typical super robot protagonist is younger and filled with BURNING SHONEN SPIRIT (or a shellshocked wreck - Shinji wasn't the first, and he sure as hell wasn't the last). Hell, even the exotic foreign beauty of a female pilot isn't just a Hollywood thing, either - it's just that in mecha shows, they're typically from the other side of the Pacific. Where'd you think Asuka's archetype came from?
Point. I guess I'm just generally worried about this looking awesome but ending up generic, regardless of which rim of the Pacific (:downsrim:) it decides to gank its cliches from. Initial story impressions of this film is painting a very...homogenized narrative which seems to contain a number of homogenized action blockbuster trappings (which, yes, just happen to be western in this instance) in spite of its novel approach. Which is fine! But it could be so much more than that.

“I felt there was a chance to do something fresh, something new that at the same time was conscious of the heritage, but not a pastiche or an homage or a greatest hits of everything. One of the first things I did is make it a point to not check any old movies or any other references. Like start from scratch.”
